That song Amazing Grace, it was written by a man who did great evil, but it was his repentant sorrow that gave us that beautiful song. No matter what you have done in life, it is never too late to change. You can't erase your past, but you can work for a better future. I think it is important as Americans that we overcome our past divisions and differences and work together for a better tomorrow. And that song, Amazing Grace gives me hope that we can do it. I do my part and vote for who I think will constantly improve the country. I believe firmly that with our system, though it appears to be in peril, we have the opportunity for infinite perfectibility. All of the presidents in my lifetime have done something to erode the checks and balances that prevent the rise of tyranny. An equal number of them were democrats and republicans. The blame for the degradation of our republic lies squarely with all of us. But we do not have to maintain this trend. We can restore what was lost if we work together. I'm an independent voter. Imagine my chagrin in the last election when the only person to both win a nomination and to have decent moral character was Jill Stein (certainly not perfect, and I do disagree with some of her platform, but dear god, she was the only candidate with basic human decency). So that's who I voted for so I could sleep at night. I can't abide someone representing me who I wouldn't be able to trust in a business deal. I think if we really care about the country and not just our favorite party, we should vote our consciences. We are responsible for our choices. When we meet our maker, can we look them in the eye and say we did the right thing? That's what I ask myself as I enter the voting booth. About the only politician currently in office that I have respect for is Mitt Romney. Whether you agree with his decision or not is not the point, but that he worried more what God would think of his decision says a lot about his character. He is accountable and maintained his oath even when it could hurt him. He voted his conscience. In my faith, Oaths are a really big deal. They are seen as sacred, and breaking an oath is a greater sin than murder. So when I look at who we have in office, and I see so many oath-breakers, I don't feel like I can support them. I don't think they are fit to represent our interests. My parents always told me when I was a kid, "Don't make promises you can't keep, and always keep your promises." My Great Great Grandfather Van C. Winans was a lawyer in Chicago during Prohibition. His passed down tradition of what it was to be a man was that a man is someone who takes their responsibilities very seriously and is always honest and always keeps his promises. He worked himself to death for the Chicago Bar Association. It took them years to figure out how to run the offices without him. It made the news in Lombard Illinois several years after his death that nobody had yet matched his seriousness in his work. I think he is a great example of taking responsibilities seriously. Even when he became ill he did not neglect his duty. I hold that standard up as a litmus test of who I think is best to represent us. We must hold our elected representatives to the highest standard if we want the highest results. We have failed to do this for the past 30 years at least. We can do better. Let's elect a competent government for once.

You know, it would be great if the announcer could pronounce "especially", and not "eckspecially". Blew the whole presentation.
