I understand Mercedes feeling she cannot provide things men can't. I find it helpful to when I think that way to think of all the things I offer that men cannot offer.
Carry a pocket knife. You'll feel much more able to protect. Most of the time when a person needs protecting it isn't even physical. You need a good head on your shoulders, the ability to problem solve, think fast on your feet, and often the gift of gab and ability to get your point across or calm a situation down. A basic example is a lot of time men actually hype up a situation until it turns violent. The ability to walk away early is more protective then getting into it and violence erupting.
