Hello Agnes. Agnes, we can only work toward our salvation while we are alive. This is why it is so important to repent of our sins, to go to confession to a priest and confess all sins. However, though we are forgiven, there are times when we have not fully atoned for our sins or are not perfectly purified in order to enter into Heaven. This is the reason for Purgatory: for those who are forgiven and who will enter into Heaven eventually but who are not completely purified and must spend time in this place of purification before entering into the perfection of Heaven.

Hello dear Agnes. Agnes, we should all have Heaven as our goal! To go to Heaven, we must be free of sin, and in a state of grace. This means that we must work to not commit sins, and that we must confess our sins when we do commit them, and to be sorrowful for them and to vow not to commit them again. It is a spiritual battle to remain sinless, but that is the most precious gift of Confession: to receive the Absolution of the priest, to have our sins forgiven and to receive the grace to help us in our battle against sin!
If we don’t have our bodies any more and just our souls go to Purgatory, do the hot flames burn our souls instead? It’s hard to imagine what that would look like. In some paintings of Purgatory we often see the anguished faces and arms of people reaching up towards Heaven, but does that mean that our bodies are reunited with our souls at that point?
Hello! This is an excellent question. The Church has never pronounced on this question. The only dogmatic pronouncement of the Church is that there is an intermediate state of purification after death before being admitted to the Beatific Vision of God. Is this really a place and is there a real fire? We know that all things are possible for God. In hell, there is a fire that makes the soul suffer though the soul is a spirit. Is there something similar in Purgatory? We do not really know. Our bodies are not reunited with our souls for us to expiate in Purgatory (or to suffer in hell or to rejoice in Heaven). This will only happen after the Second Coming of Christ at the Last Judgment. Then we will all be resurrected and our bodies and souls will receive reward or punishment for all eternity. There will be no more Purgatory after that. I think one of the most beautiful and clarifying descriptions of Purgatory is that of St. Catherine of Genoa. This mystic of the Sixteenth Century received revelations that actually enriched the Church's understanding of Purgatory. The case is unique in Church history. We believe that God gave her this singular grace to repair the evil that was done in the same century by Protestantism that arbitrarily denied the existence of Purgatory against the teaching of Scripture, tradition and the Magisterium of the Church. I also read that St Faustina had a vision of Purgatory where she described seeing ‘A great crowd of suffering souls’, so it seems that no earthly bodies are there, just souls. This is a very good question. Time is something very difficult for us to comprehend. St. Augustine said that if you asked him if he knew what time is, he would say yes, but if he was asked to explain it, he wouldn't be able to. I think the concept of eternity is even more confusing. Basically, Catholic philosophers say that the eternity of God is not a question of extension infinitely in time. He just is, without any possibility of change. So He transcends time and He created time. Before, after, forever, now: these are all time-related terms that we are obliged to use. What about the eternity of the angels and souls after death? It is true that they are not subject to time as we understand it, which is a measure of material change. However, they are also capable of change. That is why Catholic philosophers invent the very complicated notion of aeviternity to explain time outside time. As for Purgatory, when we speak of days, it is our way of understanding it. In fact, there have been visions of souls who passed years in purgatory but it was only a day on earth. (There's the interesting story of Frei Natale, a friend of Padre Pio who was sentenced to three hours in Purgatory, but felt he suffered for three hundred years.) This is because our cosmic time is different from aeviternity. That's the best I can do. in the Orthodox Church we pray for the death´s but we do not call any place a "purgatory" we do not believe in Saints as Prophets we believe in Saints as people with exemplary and miraculous lives
I do not believe on the purgatory. I actually think there are many heavens and many lives we go thru up and and down until we get to the higher Heavens as we get better purifying our souls.
Dear Freedomtoascend, there is one heaven. God created « many mansions » in heaven’ but we can not enter any of the mansions of heaven unless we are in a state of grace. Once we die, we can do nothing to purify our souls; only God in His mercy, can place our soul in purgatory to cleanse it so that it can ascend to heaven🙌🏻

The Doctrine of Purgatory is an absolutely Infallible Teaching of The Church!..we reject IT, at our own eternal risk!
