"...it's not worth hearing about." Yet I'm going to sit here for 20mins to listen about it.. I think that _that_ speaks volumes about my liking for your content, Adam!
I actually prefer the videos on the obscure consoles, just because with the popular ones, everyone already has some understanding of their stories. I knew that the Playdia existed in Japan only, but other than that I knew nothing, so I really like the videos on the obscure consoles as there isn't alot of information on them. The Generational recap videos are my favourite videos on the channel and it's grear to see new ones being made.
The most famous thing on the Bandai Playdia is Dragon Ball Z: Plan to eradicate the Saiyan's which was a OAV that never saw a US release, until it was remade and placed as a bonus on the PS3 game Dragon Ball Raging Blast 2.
The Dragon Ball Z ones are actually interesting! Its a 2 part OVA, and it was released as 2 VHS tapes to be a companion to the Famicom game release, and those tapes got fansubbed and traded on VCDs through the 90's and early 2000's. -Matt
Adam because the Bandai Playdia is so painful to talk about, here is a story for you: I know you don't like sports but there is a baseball player named Adam Kolarek. When I 1st heard his name I misheard it & was like "Wait... Adam Koralik plays baseball for the Tampa Bay Rays?"
I remember around 1993 to 1995 there were a wave of new consoles that came out of no where. They offered CD playback, 3D graphics, and were often pricey. Sony Playstation was the only winner. I was confused in 1995 when I first encountered the Playstation at the video store. Why would I buy a game console from a company that makes Stereos, TVs, and Walkman's? It didn't feel right to me at the time. Which is why waited for Nintendo 64 instead. What a odd time in gaming history.
Alternate History:: I can’t wait for the Playdia 5 to get released next year!!! New games will allow you to connect to the internet and pound through a collection of TH-cam ads! And the skip button still only kinda works...
I adore how you take garbadge as this piece and make a beautiful doco out of it just for the sake of it and for the history aspect of it. i loved the series, and really hope you'll be able to get hold of rare pong machines and oddisy (the 1st one) and get the opportonity to do 1 gen recup. above all, thanks. also, as model 82 myself, its so much fun to relive all that.
10:27 Portable/Handheld Retrospective Recap Series or whatever I want to call it hype? If so, I’m calling it! I know you hate handhelds, but if your previous videos are ANYTHING to go by, I KNOW you can make it work, Adam! I got faith in you!
Thank you for going out of your way to showcase such a weird "console" haha no seriously I don't think I would of ever heard of it if it wasn't for your effort.
I'm a pretty big Chogokin Damashii collector and if you'd like whatever little insight I might have on the subject I'd be happy to shed some light on the toys Super Robot Wars of course was the massive crossover series that Bandai Namco/banpresto went full force behind with releases on pretty much every system imaginable
Love the video man. I have an crappy console like this. I bought it at a thrift store in the box. Its called a Game Wave. I have the controllers and some "games". Idk what to do with it, and I doubt you would want it. Ive been keeping it just for the history
WaitWaitWaitWait! Did you tease a PC Engine FX episde? I think I skipped a heartbeat, that's the type of nonsense I love. Also, that audio bllue screen sounds pretty funny.
Cool vid, Adam. I once had one of these. Back around the late 90s and early 2000s I was focused on collecting every single Dragon Ball video game out there (because I was obsessed with the show lol). I found this console and the two DB games on eBay for a fairly decent price, but the console didn't work. I never got to actually play it, but it was still cool owning it for a little while. Lol
If I remember, the Dragon Ball Z episodes were made specifically for this console. They would later remake it into one movie for one of the later Dragon Ball Z games as a bonus feature. Ultimate Tenkaichi I think?
The Bandai Playdia looks like someone took a Gamecube, melted it down and tried to pour it into the Atari Jaguar mold used for making Imagine System's dental machines :P Also, 8:58 - Mika Kanai - Jigglypuff in Pokémon Rica Fukami - Sailor Venus Aya Hisakawa - Sailor Mercury, also the new Bulma after the original seiyuu passed away in 2017 Yuri Shiratori - Alice Sakaguchi from _Please Save My Earth_ Mariko Kouda - can't think of anything she's in at the moment :(
I tried so hard on my dial up internet to find a Playdia with DragonballZ lol.. those anime Quick Time Events looked cool juxtaposed next to 2D Sprites lol
on the companies releasing stuff in Japan thing, that would explain Capcom of all people publishing GTA overseas in Japan. Sounds about right for the backstory I bet it was installed in one of those demo kiosks for playing videos, I'm sure. Neat piece of videogames history, if nothing else.
Adam, in our hearts we are all still Japanese kids in 1994. This is especially true if we watched anime once. Also, this might have a lot in common with the Stadia. Also it seems like a dumb down PS2, my first and last DVD player.
As far as I know, the DBZ Playdia “games” are original side stories made for the console, fully voice acted with the Japanese cast. I assume the Sailor Moon “game” is the same way, but your guess is as good as mine, since I’ve never watched it.
I remember reading in an old CVG magazine back in the day there was talks of Sega making a console with Bandai called the Black belt. I'm not sure if that was one of CVGS classic April fools jokes or not. At that point though loving Sega so much I obviously had to start showing love to Bandai.
You compared the disc's functionality to LaserDisc but it makes me wonder; maybe it uses VCDs? Also, thank you for talking about the Sufami Turbo. I've never seen anyone on TH-cam mention that before.
I know a lot of weird and obscure tech, especially retro tech, and I didn't even know this was a thing. Surprisingly, this is typical of Bandai not really understanding the market they are getting themselves into. They were constantly doing this up til the late 2000s to pretty much nearly bankrupt the company.
I only heard about Playdia was due to hearing about a few Sailor Moon games being in there (as of DBZ games). And to be honest, while the idea was good for those, I honestly wished the FMVs were in better quality
My opinion is that no one could have done what Sony did before Sony itself... because all the other lacked what Sony had: Its People, and the people had a huge motivation to make it work.

it would hv been more interesting if u show a little gameplay of each console you talk about. I was eager to see what the games look like gameplay wise but was a bit disappointed when it wasn't shown.
@@AdamKoralik as in - came with genuine wireless controller in box. Maybe there were some 3rd party wirelless controllers for other consoles, but I was thinking about first party.

(Just out of curiosity I looked up images of a Fisher-Price DVD player, and what I saw wasn't too far off from the Playdia, except it was portable.)

RB2 also came out on the 360. Also the rb2 version only includes 1 ending and is shortened compared to the original.

Hehe Playdia still better then Stadia, we need google to EOL that ASAP.
