I turned down 2 invitations (and went to 2) in the past 10 months because wow! They were 4 and 6 hours drive, respectively. One was on New Years Eve, the other a weekend before exams, and both required booking accommodations, plus you have to buy a decent gift for all their effort.
It’s more than R5000 in total. A two-day affair back in their home province. Travel + accommodation costs. Traditional fits are costly, the white wedding is themed. You are not part of the bridal party, just an ordinary guest. Yes, bring a worthy gift, this is your good friend. I’m ashamed to disclose the amount. You make it two days because you opt out of the third day - husband’s side.

Please consider renting a bridesmaid dress at a bridal shop instead...much cheaper, and you send ut back so it doesnt take up all the space in your wardrobe
It all goes back to how family culture has changed, generally speaking weddings and marriages are built and sustained by family But in this era of parents have left their kids to fend for themselves and divided the kids, so some of these costs and services were going to be offset by help from family and friends
I’ve been a bridesmaid once and I’ll be in two more weddings soon. It’s fun. It’s exhausting. It’s expensive. I’m trying to cherish the moment but also ready to be done and afraid that it might make me a bad friend 🫣
