In 1995, I was training a group of Head Teachers in Lahore. There were two female head teachers in that group. One had a hijab (burqa) and the other did not. After the training in Lahore finished, the trainees came to Cambridge, UK for their final component. I went, with my wife, carrying some Indian sweets to welcome them to Cambridge. The evening went well with friendly conversations and full of laughter. Just before I was leaving, I enquired about the other female trainee. Was she not able to come over? On that, one of the two females in that group said: “That’s me, sir. I don’t wear the burqa here - that’s why you’ve not recognised me!! I wear burqa in Lahore to keep my in-laws happy. In my own mother’s family, we did not grow up wearing burqas!! 😃
