  • This is a quick video on how to use Dr. Kilpatrick’s book “Equipped for Reading Success” with your student or child. His book helps develop phonological and later phonemic awareness, necessary skills for orthographic mapping.
.Test the child to see what level they are at with the P.A.S.T.
.Start at the level indicated and do the levels in order with the exception of level E2-E5. “Do not expect students to master all of Level E before moving on to Levels F and G. When a student has mastered Level E2, go on to Level F1.” Do levels E3, E4, & E5 can be done alongside Levels F and G.
    3. Do these daily or a few times a week.
.Use one of the variations scripted instructions provided at the top of the page
.Pronounce the syllables that are printed in isolation as you would say them in speech instead of the way the printed form would suggest. (the syllable breaks are not designed to facilitate the activity and aren’t a guide to pronunciation).
.Give them time to figure it out. Continue practicing that level until their answers are automatic or within 2 seconds.
.If the student struggles to hear the syllables they can clap or put their hands under their chin
.If the student struggles you can use manipulatives for syllables or individual phonemes. First, tiles, chips, or Post-its with letters. Then when they can do that, move onto BLANK tiles, chips, or Post-its for individual syllables or phonemes. (This can be tricky as letters change for phonemes, but it helps the student begin to develop the skill for that level.)
.Be sure to do the reviews suggested in the book and more of your own.
.Keep going until the student has mastered all of the levels with fluency.
