I have never tried it. You could try it and see if it would work. Typically stars like to build their nests in an enclosed nest so that they feel safe.
Hi Chris It’s gary from Scotland I’ve just got 2 pairs of star finches and 2 pairs shaft tails do these birds need live food like mealworm and wax worms to feed there chicks
Hey Gary! Generally for those species you don’t need live food for them to successfully breed. I do know for me these two species have bred better for me in larger aviary settings than in smaller cage settings as they can be nervous breeders. But, having said that I know many people have bred these species in smaller cages successfully. Keep a daily egg food along with the seed mix. You can include live food as I’m sure they will readily accept them but do not require it for successful breeding.
How do you get the aggression issue of Gouldians in colony situation, boxes next to boxes, ? I'm going to try cardboard inbetween boxes on shelf to try and stop extream territorial disputes. This year is worst I have ever had, also my Blue males are only interested in blue females and I have always been told never to breedbBXB? My split to Blue females absolutely HATE my blue females and they have 7 splits to choose from, and hens chase and attack the males in group situations for natural selection ? I'm trying to avoid pr per cage, so I'm not maintaining 27 single cages, but the groups are definitely not working, the hens are very aggressive in my Blue group.
Do they have enough space in the aviary. Overcrowding can lead to higher aggression. If possible try to spread out their nest boxes. If not then yes dividers in between nests would definitely help.
Thank you for the video, very interesting as always and a lot of information. I need help. I am looking for a sighted adult male starfinch in Illinois near Chicago. Maybe someone knows reliable breeders of these birds.
I don’t know of any in the Chicago area. There is a forum called the finch forum you can join that group and then ask if there are any breeders in your area.
