Well the ex-militia man story has some flaws.Eg His claim of killing a leopard and not going back to pick it because they may be attacked by other ones is false.Leopards are solitary animals and do not live in herds. They are territorial and mark their area of operations with their strong pungent urine to keep away intruders.In the big cats domain only Lions live in herds.
