  • CHAPTER 2: WE HAVE A SERIAL KILLER
Shannan Gilbert's disappearance in 2010 sparked the discovery of 11 bodies on and near Gilgo Beach on Long Island.
"One of the most significant things I've ever heard at any kind of public official say, I think it was the first full day after that first report that we did," recalled Einiger. "There was a press conference with the man who was then the police commissioner. And he said something that to this day, I remember everything about what he said and how he said it."
"We're looking at that. We're looking at that. That we could have a serial killer," said Richard Dormer, the Suffolk County Police Commissioner.
"To this day, so many years later, it symbolized the moment that it was clear that this was something enormous," Einiger recalled.
"There was a lot of speculation, because it's still a remote area, maybe more than one person use this as a dumping ground because it was that isolated the weather conditions were that extreme out there," recalled Eyewitness News reporter, Darla Miles, who was also there reporting the next morning after the bodies were first discovered.
"The tragedy of this story is how incompetently managed this investigation was from the beginning," said Einiger.
Watch our series 'Eyewitness to Gilgo Beach' and the story of the serial killings investigation on Long Island, NY, and the arrest of Rex Heuermann.

I did an internship for the killer. I did not like him, he was rude, annoying and didn’t know how to delegate the work he wanted me to do which was frustrating for me. I was doing video editing for him. Finding images that weren’t copyrighted for him to use in promotional videos for advertising or something. I think it was a bullshit internship and complained about that. A woman referred me to him. She claimed that she had referred other women to him that he helped. I confronted her about him and she tried to convince me that he was a good person. She lied. I didn’t trust her motives either.
He took me out to lunch after interning for a few days, tried to get me to get a vaccine shot at a drug store, then offered to be my sugar daddy. I laughed in his face and refused. He told me he wanted me to come all the way from Manhattan to work for him in Long Island. I did not trust him and never went back to intern for him. He just seemed creepy. Especially his eyes.
Not to get too personal. I was homeless at the time and he was asking me questions about my family. He tried to act like he was concerned but he was not convincing. I am sorry this happened to those girls. This was around 2011. I got out of homeless in 2013.

I just hope they have the ONLY guilty person locked up, & there aren’t more victims. These victims lives were already tragic, how do people hurt those already suffering? Some people are so abnormal I think genetic studies should be done. There must be a story inside of them, we should learn what that is. To all the endangered people, be safe. Beware of who you allow near you & don’t make yourself more vulnerable by using substances, when you’re with someone you can’t trust. You need a clear head, to save yourselves. Remember these people are not normal, or they would be home. Don’t trust, care about yourself, be safe, you poor lost children. I’m so sorry you weren’t given the lives you needed. You still matter.

Smiling throughout, actually admitting his "first thought" when the story broke was that it would be a big story - talk about out of touch and unfeeling. At that point, it was a story about four dead women. What a tosser.

The amount of RADIATION to connect a live shot to a reporter must be enormous. That is a one job that would scare me.😅
Do we really need to have a reporters on camera biography about the murders?😅😅 I mean really. Just tell the story with a narration voice behind all the video explanations. A bit boring to watch. 😅
