A couple things to consider re the grill cloth for those who are going to do this. The orientation of the cloth; there is a front and back, as well as a horizontal and vertical. It would appear at first sight that the cloth is the same no matter how you place it. In fact there is a slight difference depending on what color cloth you buy. Look closely so that it is orientated the way it should be. Hard to explain without doing a video and without writing a book of a comment. Also, start on the top edge when stapling and line up first in the center moving out to the edges using a horizontal line in the cloth as a guide. Use the lines in the cloth as a guide overall so it ends up nice, straight and square. Repeatedly check your work. It’ll get wonky if you don’t. Fun job and pretty simple. Thanks for the video.
^^^ this is good advice to avoid the alignment mistake I made
I wondered about this after I had fully removed the old. My other Fender amps all scream, HORIZONTAL! ... and there is a front and a back, that's quite obvious.
Here's me, sitting in my kitchen, keeping warm on a cold and rainy day in Shropshire, England, wondering how to repair the grill cloth on my Fender amp. And there he is, a bloke in in his garage on a freaking hot August day in Arkansas, showing me exactly how to do it. Brilliant! Thank you.
Here's me hoping you get a warm, sunny day soon!
This is how you do a video man! Great job!
"Alrighty, you licked the thumbnail, so you know what we're doing. Let's get into it." 2 seconds in and I was already sold on this video. Thank you for the very helpful information man!
Good video. Fellow Arkansan here. So hot in August. WPS.
About to replace the cloth on silver face champ. This helped.
WPS! Glad I could help!
Good for you on this FYI project. For future readers, I note, the grill fabric was installed inside-out, the pattern was not squared with the amplifier edges, and you didn't use a heat gun to tighten the fabric.
Judging by your reference to lineman's and looking at your parts organizers I'm going to speculate you're an electrician haha takes one to know one thanks for this great video
Yessir! Started as a commercial electrician back in 2011, now I'm a farmer and musician but I keep my license current just in case.
When I’ve done grille cloths at the end I take a heat gun to the cloth to slightly shrink it and tighten it up.
The OCD in me says the right side is crooked. God, I hate myself sometimes. lol Great directions for those wondering. Not sure how this landed in my recommendations list but nice watch.
Oh trust me I feel the same way haha. I noticed as soon as I flipped the baffle board over and was kicking myself for not double checking my alignment before stapling it in place. Lesson learned for next time!
i couldn't have left it drooping like that. perfectionism is hard.
@@donaldmeade5892 Ah, I don't even notice anymore. The time cost required to realign it would not be repaid by any increase in tip jar revenue!
nice job brother - i just got a fender satellite amp and it has no front baffleboard or grill? got to figure sometihing out on that...
Best.Intro.Ever.
thanks for the video, i was going to trade in my amp to the local GC, but
they wouldnt take it because the grill cloth was ripped. i will order some cloth
and fix it as demonstrated in your vide0 but i will do it in an air conditioned room, not
in a garage that is hot and not air conditioned. you are a pretty tough guy to
do this video under those conditions.
This video will be handy tomorrow. Thank you
Looks great 👍
Great video, exactly the info I needed! Thanks for posting!
Damn I wish I could work that fast ! Looks Great !
Leave the speakers on next time to hold down the grill cloth tight, and it’ll keep you from sucking the paper cone or voice coil out of the speaker frame, great video btw, inspired me to redo mine it got rained on a few too many times and that “sawdust baffle board” disintegrated
You gotta cut the cloth out from underneath the edge of the speaker or it'll warp the basket when you tighten it down and could cause the voicing coil to rub
That's a good point! If I have to do this in the future I will take that into consideration. I was figuring it out as I went so I thought my best bet was to replicate how the previous cloth was cut and positioned.
Great work. Thanks for the video.
Glad you enjoyed it!
What tool did you use to take off the screws holding the speakers to the baffle?
11/32" hollow shank nut driver for this amp. Couldn't get a wrench in where I needed it.
Perfect Video! Thanks!
Glad it helped!
Thank you for the video!
Is new cloth as good as vintage?
The cloth I purchased is the exact material and pattern that fender originally used, it looks and feels exactly like the cloth that was removed. Certainly no difference in sound. And at around 60 gigs with it since the swap no one has ever commented after a show that it looks like the grill cloth has been replaced.
@@CzBMusic Thanks! I appreciate the quick reply. I'm going to try and clean mine first, but if it won't come clean I'll change it.
Dangit man your blowing my brain.good job bubba.
I am curious can you order these grill cloths to come in sizes big enough to do a 412 Marshall cab? I want to build my own custom 412 or 212 cabinet and I like the Fender look just a tad bit better than the Marshall look
Yes you can order them in any size. The ones marked for a standard cab sizes come several inches larger than you will need so you can trim them down to fit
Nice job, not quite symmetrical. 🤪👍
I've my Vibroverb reissue on the bench now. I have no idea why the grill cloth went to shit.
I've heavily gigged 60's, even a beat '59 amp, where the grill cloth is like new....
I hit you up because I wonder if you did the glue thing.... you didn't.
That is odd. As far as I knew Fender always had hook 'n loop holding the grill on. I had 3 fender amps and they all came with that.
My 1978 Twin Reverb has a seperate board holding the speakers. The grill just pops off.
Sucks these amps don't have the removable grille frame with velcro like the older amps
No kidding
that thing just went up $500 in value...
I sure hope so!
I don't think so with those Jensen speakers in it. I like Jensen's but in a Fender amp? I never heard of it that could be wrong though. But I don't think so. Just saying.
@@louisgarcia5971 Those Jensens are the stock speakers that come with the '65 Twin Reissue. It is a statistical likelihood that you have heard Jensens in a Fender whether or not you have "heard of" Jensens in a Fender.
"That was Easy!" Holy cows...no wonder people just leave them ripped.
Hello. It's a good job, but for me, i see a little problem, , because I am a maniac man. The motif of canvas is not parallel with the border on front panel of this amplifier. it's not very nice for me. Have a good day and sorry for my poor english...
Both back plates should have been removed first.
On the bright side, you will always be able to I.D. your amp . . .
It's the one with the CATTYWAMPUS GRILL CLOTH !
Exactly! I'm glad you get it!
Ill just leave mine as is,lol
It is not straight
You can just rip the cloth without removing the staples. The tap them flat. No one is ever going to see them, lol.
... and now put that too big, too loud and too heavy amp up for sale and get a Deluxe Reverb 🙂
Maybe down the road, I like it way too much to get rid of just yet!
