If you're looking for something very useful when you're stuck with voices on melody, Kurt gives here a way : thinking two voices of a chord and play the melody with it, for example root and seventh and the melody (Body and Soul) 7:18 to 8:47 after that it's Fifth and Third. Yep - great exercise for learning tunes and improving! Best of all as Kurt says it's "basic" info that clearly projects the sound of the chord. He really is a fantastic teacher too.

Listen to what he said in this clip. Take the root and 7th, or the 5th and 3rd of every chord a song has, and use those while playing the melody of the tune. He's trying to help others understand that it's not necessarily about a vocabulary of chords that you pick from. Each song contains the information you need in it! The more you try this, the more other sounds will open themselves up to you.
