Johnny Utah she is widely considered to be the most important classic(al) guitarist of the twentieth century, both for her artistry and, with her husband Alexandre Lagoya, the revitalization of the guitar duo.
Composer-guitarist John W. Duarte told me and a mutual friend that Ida possessed the greatest technique of all the guitarists he had heard (Segovia and Presti were both friends of his for whom pieces were composed) and great musicianship was already apparent at age 14 - when these 78 r.p.m. analogue discs were recorded, her beautiful 'touch' on gut strings shining through.
OMG best rendition of these pieces...and I thought that nobody could top Bream, well......this is impeccable technically, and played with so much soul!
I read many years ago that Segovia met Presti when she was about 12 years old. After listening to her play he simply announced:"There is NOTHING I can teach this girl". It is reasonable to say that perhaps Segovia and Presti are the two greatest guitarists of all time. They are akin to what Michelangelo was as an Artist and Sculptor. That is to say Segovia and Presti, after all is said and done, were more than the SUM of all the parts. More than virtuoso technique, more than exquisite sensitivity. More than brilliant Musicality. In Presti and Segovia we encounter a type of Genius that borders on something that we may refer to as Divine. Just as during the Renaissance there were so many truly gifted Painters of extraordinary genius that it makes our heads spin in wonder.Yet, in the end, there was ONLY one Michelangelo. When one stands before his Pieta sculpted from a block of marble at the age of 25 or gazes at his Frescos in the Sistine Chapel one is challenged to understand how these creations came from the hands of a Human being. Likewise to listen to Segovia and/or Presti we somehow cannot help feeling we are listening to the performances of Divine Human Beings. The most startling and unbelievably shocking thing for me is that even among the world of professional Guitarists, one would be amazed at how few have the least in depth awareness or knowledge of Ida Presti. Many people barely know her name. I can never get over this strange phenomenon except to say that I believe it is because she was a Woman and not a Man.
When Andrés Segovia heard Ida Presti play in 1936, he was 37 years old and in his prime, getting better. Try to imagine that unapologetic ego announcing that he had nothing to teach her, at 12 years old!. Ida Presti's father and her teacher--admired performer and teacher--said that by ten years old she was "already formed," that her "technique was perfect." . . . Although I'm 79 years old and life still dear to me, I'm a romantic through and through, and would gladly my life had been shortened that hers had been longer. In a millennium, greatness appears once or twice. She's one. If there were a god, from Ida Presti's life we'd know that to have let her die of cancer at the age of 42, he was either careless or worse, sadistic.
@@TalentedDilittante It is my belief that there is no God - and no supreme being - having said that, Presti's supremacy in the world of guitar is unquestionable - rather like many other prodigies, her talents must have been carried across from a previous lifetime of assiduity, diligence and virtue. And of course, this is merely my opinion, which along side the opinions of so many others, is an irrelevance in light of this experience. Her playing speaks for itself, and needs neither myself or anyone else to speak for her - other than to communicate the delight of hearing her playing - which is, without doubt, exquisite !
@@BernieHolland-w4l Hahaha, although I agree whole-heartedly about no god, no supreme being, yet you are almost forgivably pompous, and your "carried across" smacks of reincarnation! I assume you meant to say, DOYENNE--not "dames". Who in the first half of the twentieth century was as good? Born in 1924, Ida Presti was at her prime before mid-century.
I like to think she is still playing the guitar to this day in heaven. Maybe with an audience of angels and humanity heroes. Somewhere in the sky between golden clouds, far away rainbows, and cherry trees in blossom.
Una lástima que haya tan pocas grabaciones de ella.Hubiera sido increíble haberla escuchado tocar a Barrios o a Ponce...fué una de las mas grndes guitarristas que hayan existido...
David Pakter, 9th below . . . If I may add . . . Although the guitar has many wonderful players, Ida Presti set the standard--not for now, not for the 1st or 2nd half of the 20th century, but for all time; a dimension peopled by J.S. Bach, Wm. Shakespeare, Jacqueline Du Pré, Albert Einstein, Miguelangelo and Ernest Hemingway, Rembrandt Van Rijn and Gabriel Garcia Márquez, Lao Tzu, Tolstoi, Pavaroti and Dostoievski. Yes, the pantheon of immortal artists. (IDA PRESTI WAS 14 years old when she made the above recording.) Thank you, Mr. Rolando Navarro!
It would have been magnificent to hear her play. I have one recording by her and alexander Lagoya. All baroque guitar duets. My hope is to play half as well as her one day!
thrift shops carry libraries of vinyl, incl the nonesuch recordings by presti & lagoya,,it takes hours of digging, sometimes you find unopened,or rarely played editions,,stores may ask fifty cents or a buck each, vinyl reissues?? if there is demand,,someone will try to do it.
Although her use of portamento (expected for a recording from the 1930s!) may not quite fit the Baroque style as we understand it today Ida Presti’s way of phrasing, as if there were no barlines at all just blows my mind

One of the great dames of the guitar, and probably the best performer of the second half of the twentieth century!
