    Welcome back to the world of Horizon. In the most extreme biomes of this planet of machines, ill-tempered titans, skilled survivalists, and genuine terrors still await discovery. Like the animals braving the harshest regions of our current age, these machines have had to get creative to endure the hazards of the elements.
    The environments are perilous, and the machines that live here even more so, but sometimes discovery requires certain risks. And with mysterious robots that aren’t part of the ecosystem awakening in the darkest corners of the land, who knows what final secrets are buried beneath the ground.
    So, join me on the last section of our documentary-style journey, as we conclude our expedition across the uncharted regions…

    I love how certain machines fill certain ecological niches that are unique to machines (like Shell Walkers, or Control Towers) due to diferences in capacities between organic and non-organic beings.

    • @johncronk8867
      @johncronk8867 ปีที่แล้ว

      The Shell Walkers actually do have a zoological analogue: the drones of Ants and Bees! They go out and collect resources for their hive/Cauldron to feed their companions and let their queen/fabricator reproduce more members of their network. Heck, Honeypot Ants have members specifically for the storage and distribution of food; the abdomens of some Honeypot Ants contain a giant expandable sac that’s used for storing food processed into a sugary honey-like nectar. Other ants even carry out part of the refinement process, so the members with honeypots are purely storage, just like Shell Walkers.
      You could compare Control Towers and their drones to some combination of (eusocial) insect hive and Cleaner Wrass, Cleaner Shrimp, Oxpeckers, and/or Plover Birds. Those last 4 creatures are essentially the dentists or doctors of the animal world: they clean the teeth or skin of other animals clean of detritus and parasites, getting a meal while improving the health of their “patients.”

    "Unlike some herbivores, though, chargers have an aggressive side"
    I've personally never been a fan of people painting herbivores as passive. The vast, vast majority of them are just as dangerous, if not more so, than the carnivores in their ecosystems.

    • @krazyfan1489
      @krazyfan1489 2 ปีที่แล้ว +52

      Exactly!

    • @mozarteanchaos
      @mozarteanchaos 2 ปีที่แล้ว +100

      yep. carnivores have to be careful when hunting or fighting; if they get injured, they may be unable to hunt, leaving them to starve to death. most of them would rather avoid confrontation if they can help it - even favouring scavenging over hunting if they have the option to.
      however, herbivores don't need to chase their food, so they can afford to risk a bit of injury if it comes to it. true, they'd also prefer to avoid fights when possible, but if a herbivore fails to identify and escape from/eliminate a predator, it's done for, and for many species, killing the (potential) predator before it has the chance to attack in the first place is better than ignoring it, or even running and hoping it can't catch them, regardless of whether or not it was an actual threat.

    • @lsmmoore1
      @lsmmoore1 2 ปีที่แล้ว +68

      I'm not a fan of that either. Especially since a lot of the wild animal injuries you hear about at national parks (the vast majority of them I'll bet) are to folks who go right up to a bison or other large herbivore because, even if the person disdains the idea of veganism, they still think "herbivore cruelty-free, therefore safe" and assume they can just walk right up to a bison (or other large herbivore, though it usually seems to be bison) and pet it. Even though in reality giving sharks a belly rub is probably safer (and sharks are still dangerous and can still bite you in half if they think you're a seal).

      machines cannot reproduce the same way we can, that does not mean that they cannot reproduce at all. Theoretically if these machines sort of had a beehive system similar or not so similar to horizon zero dawn’s and also had complex learning ai, gradually this learning ai would eventually tamper and experiment on its machines to give them benefits for there changing environments, slowly changing them over time with random minor or major bodily modifications, similar to how evolution gives animals random genetic mutations with some genetic mutations actually benefitting the animal and making the animal carry this benefitting trait in the long run. My guess is if that were to happen, in probably several billion cycles, these robots would seem alot more animal than they are now, or even alot more human.

    The metal Devils are so menacing when you see them in the distance. I can only imagine what they were like when they were alive. Even worse, I can imagine how they can come back. In vivid detail.
    A single corruptor wanders the frozen wastes, its only company being a fellow deathbringer whose weapons have long since rusted off. The two spot a control tower in the distance using its drones to repair a fallen Frostclaw. The two then look up the mountain, beholding the gargantuan corpse of their third brother. For the first time in a century, connections begin to form in the mind of one of the forgotten warriors. From these connections within the mind of the corruptor, an idea is born. A horrible, horrible idea. With a single sting of its tail the control tower flails wildly, before suddenly going limp. As it slowly reawakens the lights across its body turn a startling purple, just one of the many sinister symptoms of the Corruptor's sting.
    It's larger brother does not pay mind to the state of the tower. Rather it is focused on the thousands of small repair drones who have stopped mid-air as if frozen in time. The buzzing of the swarm echoes into the sky as they migrate toward the fallen Devil. Deep within the eyes of the two old machines, the faintest hint of emotion can be seen. Neither machine knows the true name of the emotions they feel, but a quick scan through their old memories reveals a word that is deeply associated with their current feelings:
    "Revenge"

      @@WykeRowerMedia ARK's first map, known only as "The Island" features almost exclusively dinosaurs and other prehistoric creatures, which leads people to assume that the game is just a dinosaur game. Lets just say that there is a bit of a twist at the end of that map that opens the door to a lot more speculative biology in the DLC expansions.
      I'll give a full explanation below but it's a bit of a spoiler if you've never seen the DLCs or even just the ending of the base game.
      ARK takes place in the far future after an apocalyptic event on Earth and the titular ARKs are space stations / artificial ecosystems orbiting around Earth. The ARKs feature various genetically engineered species, ranging from dinosaurs, to literal dragons, as well as cloned humans from various different points in Earth's history (ranging from literal cavemen to 24th century). The more fantastical creatures are often engineered specifically as a means to control the human population of a station - like if the people living on a certain ARK do stuff they're not supposed to, then that ARK might engineer some mythological creature as punishment. The Aberration and Extinction DLCs feature quite a bit of speculative biology, with Aberration being a malfunctioning ARK and Extinction taking place on Earth and featuring life forms that are heavily implied to have evolved since the Apocalypse. It also includes a couple of species that are implied to be alien lifeforms, such as the astrocetus (space whales) featured in the Genesis DLCs.

      "The crew saw one of those creatures swimming in the interstellar medium, and named it astrodelphis -- 'space dolphin'.
      Someone aboard figured out how to tame and ride them -- guess they must've had a lot of time on their hands."

    Well done on telling the story of this curious journey! You've done a fantastic job chronicling the sheer variety of these synthetic beings, and building up a proper atmosphere of presence around each and every one. Especially with the invasive curiosities, such as the Control Towers - ones that do not even merit a graceful name for how mysterious and unusual they are. I'm really interested to see the tale of this explorer to continue in the potential future months, too, since the new machines are even more incredible than anything seen here thus far - and that's saying something with how amazing these specimens already are.
    Continuing off my comment on the previous episode, some more observations from myself:
    - Stormbirds appear to play a role in atmospheric regulation, using their immense electrical power to ionize cloud systems in order to seed them, bringing rain and lighting to otherwise arid, desolate wastelands. It's also amazing to behold the detail that their frames are so huge, that their flight requires the support of six jet-like engines resembling feathers to keep them aloft! I wonder if even larger, airborne machines glide about at the edge of the sky, monitoring cloud patterns and ensuring the Stormbirds bring their almost godlike presence to the correct areas.
    - Tramplers not only purify soil, but they also seem to play a role in sculpting terrain as well, using the explosions from their processing engines to level terrain. It's most likely that these units are one of the first deployed to a new site to terraform, before others arrive to seed and nurture greenery once the explosive risk has moved on to their next task.
    - The Corruptor and Deathbringer perfectly embody an invasive species. Their design looks so unnatural compared to the others, their frames moving in much more mechanical ways - all the way down to their gaits. The "mouth" of a Deathbringer opens to reveal a glowing, mangled heatsink, almost like some unholy monster opening its mouth and exhaling a breath of fire and brimstone. It's no surprise that the humans of this world regard them as demons, their writhing masters the devilish kings of such a domain. They feel so *alien* - forms perfectly sculpted to kill and destroy, instead of nurture and foster.
    ... And I hear that very recently, word is in a coastal region very, very far out west, lies a potential Devil that could still be active. As horrifying as that may be, being able to witness how such an unholy, unnatural giant moved and behaved with such power to crush a global civilization would be incredible to see, wouldn't it?

    Loved these 2 videos. The machine design in the horizon games has always been one of its most unique and alluring aspects. I love how much thought is put in to their actual function within the ecosystem and still manages to make them look cool and sometimes terrifying

    I've watched these videos before, but I've been hankering to replay HZD/HFW and this scratches that itch enough to keep me from getting started :'D I hope you do make that HFW companion at some point, I find this style of video very soothing and that game has definitely some of my favourite machines.

    Your narration style is wonderful, as always. How about making a video about Rain World and its alien creatures? This game has literally the best animal AI. All creatures can interact with each other without player's interference, even when player is running somewhere in the other corner of the region. This forms a convincing ecosystem that moves and lives, and it can be very interesting to observe.
