Picking up my camera at 54 after not having one since the early ‘90s, reawakening an old passion, and launching a part time photography gig in the new year - I needed this video. Mahalo. ❤️
VJ, Love your zoom with Joe B, I love his view on capturing the moments of the day for his clients! I too have become a bit emotional at some of my weddings!! its the impath in me! thanks VJ you ROCK!!!
It's great to see Joe still loving what he does. I burned out in 1991, put my 500CM on a shelf and it's still there. The business end of wedding work killed it for me. I haven't been able to pick up a camera since. Keep shooting. I wrote the above midway through the video before you showed Joe's work. 5 minutes in I'm back to 30+ years ago, the brides and grooms I have met, and captured.. I literally have a tear in my eye, I so sorely miss this.
HUGE!!!! "I wish people would start to pay attention to what they capture in the camera, rather than thinking about what they can fix." GOLD!!!! | No such thing as a perfect picture, only a perfect moment.... I LOVE THIS!!!!! Thank you very much Vanessa, this was so inspirational.... I had never heard of Joe before today and I just saw your photo challenge with him, which had me going down the rabbit hole of everything Joe now. What a GREAT Guy, I was so moved by this interview.
@@VanessaJoy I am so tempted to drive up to Venice from San Diego to meet him. I love his philosophy, I developed the same one coming from shooting photos from my church plays. I too wanted to share the BTS and the story behind the show.... I accidentally took that over into weddings I have captured. He seems to be a wonderful man to sit and chat with. I did giggle a bit, you reminded me of myself when I met you at WPPI....as you met him in the video holding his camera... awe struck, excited, and happy to be in their presence. I love these interviews of icon photographers... I learn so much! Keep these going, because the stories are important.
Thanks so much for introducing me to Joe Buissink! I'm a Fantasy Art-Portrait Photographer and just listening to Joe speak of his passion, makes me want to really think in-depth about my own photography! So very inspiring! And I also want to say thank you Vanessa, you are always bringing fresh ideas & information and "you" inspire me.
A thing on the "P" mode, many pros also shoot in Aperture Priority mode as well. I started as a "M" only mode just to learn about light, (doing mostly artistic landscapes), but now I do a lot either in P or AP mode. Great discussion and video Vanessa! ❤
Joe is an absolute pleasure to listen to and his work is inspirational. I have heard him in the past note that he is selling an experience for his clients and this authentic humility is so refreshing in an industry that could use it. Thank you for creating this content Vanessa.
Some real nuggets in this - Johannnes desire to be 'different' really resonates with me; especially now. Artistic creativity and not following the 'norm' is crucial - especially now where everyone thinks they are a photographer
Thank You Vanessa and Joe for a wonderful and inspiring conversation. So many golden nuggets were shared. Thanks again for sharing this conversation with us! ❤️👏❤️👏
This was really good! Thanks so much for sharing. I've seen his name before but never took the time to look at his work. I listened to the whole video while I was mowing the lawn, then came inside and watched it all over again so I could see his images. Really love his philosophy and approach.
Joe is absolutely amazing as a photographer and I can only imagine he’s the same in person. I absolutely enjoyed his wedding photography from some time ago on Creative Live. I’m excited to see this in my email Vanessa
Thank you, Vanessa! Fantastic conversation!!! Joe, you are an inspiration!!! To me, the must have traditional event photos are "nice" for the album, but the secret sauce is made up of those candid, fleeting moments in life!!!
Thank you Vanessa and thank you Joe. Although I'm a couple decades behind Joe, I as well learned on film and prints. Joe is great and reminds me of my beginning in photography as a young man. I didn't know who Joe was and I enjoyed learning about him. Wonderful interview. I really enjoyed the hour. 🤗
Really enjoyed this interview. Met Joe briefly about a decade ago and always enjoyed his work. Will be sharing the direct flash story on my FB/IG soon!
This was so unexpected coming from a photography vlog but so worth the watch. Too many of the talking-head type photography vlogs are full of a bunch of technical how-I-shot-it or what gear I used and not enough of the photographers’ back stories like this. Great content!
Thank you Joe, being able to shoot and expose in film is the base I use in digital. This stuns the people who are digital base. I still have my medium format and 2, 35mmSLR in my dry cabinet.. now that film is on rise I am hoping to get a few roll of transparency film and relive the moment. I also did my own E6 processing.
What a great moment and conversation you've shared with us Vanessa. It was like how Joe mentioned about going to an art gallery. I got to witness that 3rd person point of view of art between you two.
I love what he said: "I insist on meeting the (wedding) couples". Too often its a cheap fone call with the question: How much? And no conversation about the photography etc
You guys get a phone calll? Haha I'm a wedding videographer and no one wants to speak to me at all. Just book and move on. I force a call a month before the wedding to go over schedule stuff and expectations... I'd love to do that first, but if I made that a requirement, I might as well sell my gear and start applying for jobs.
How have I never heard of Joe before? Absolutely awesome video Vanessa! "P" mode, not a fan of heavy editing or "spray and pray" shooting, and best of all, he's more of the "photo sniper" type of photographer. He's like the WORLDS more experienced, 20 year older version of myself. 😂 I will definitely be looking him up on Instagram and his website. I can understand why you love him so much. Very inspirational story from top to bottom. Thank you.
Amazing photos 😊 ... I never knew what to call myself as a photographer but sniper shooter fits my shooting and personality. .. Thank you Vanessa for having Joe on this chat.
Damn, I am going to have to play around with P mode now and see how it works for me, I wouldn't have thought of using that till I watched this video but why not, it's a tool just like any other on my camera, an inspiring video, thanks.
I am still a relative beginner, used P mode only for the first few days. I prefer aperture priority to get pictures the way I like. I try to use as low an ISO as I can (preferably not higher than 2000) without my shutter speed going too low for the lens (and focal length) I am using. It suits what I like to shoot most: architecture and other quirky things on the street. I shoot stuff that catch my fancy and make me feel amazed or happy.
Love this so much. I wish I would have caught it live to ask questions. My passion is capturing life in the moment but it can be tricky. I would love to know how you (Joe)go from someone calling you (like Anne) to hire you to talking money. What does that conversation look like? You are feeling bleesed to be able to do it but also know you must earn a living.

appreciate that these approaches can transcend the budget of the bride and groom
I wish I could give this video a few dozen likes. So inspirational. Thank you Vanessa for doing this interview.

I could listen to Joe all day. What an amazing life he's led. He should write an autobiography and his memoirs so his stories can live on forever.
I agree with this one
Love his story! I didn't know about him but now I do!
Such an amazing person. Thank you for sharing with us!

I never heard of him because we got married at the courthouse… he’s a bad ass legend like you say.
This is incredible. I didn't know either of you (clearly I've been missing out) but this is among the best content I've watched on TH-cam!
