This never works for me. It logs me out and then nothing ever happens.

I figured this out back then. Basically once FDM has a failed upgrade it creates a log file that says it failed so all subsequent upgrades will fail when it hits that log file. You can work with TAC clear it but they may just ask you to do a clean install of the newer version as well.
I ended up switching from FDM to FMC even on simple deployments where FDM is really all that should be required. FDM just sucks. I’ve liked my Fortigates in small simple environments… Just saying. 😉

@@justinmanship5431 thanks a lot man, this input will help my team to narrow it down, it seems like taking forever to ask Cisco's support the time zone is limiting our coms and they cant live assist us due to policy stuff. Thanks again tho cheers!

how long did the upgrade take to process the tar file? then how long did the install take?

The overall update process varies or depends on bandwidth. How fast can you pull down the image from the internet to the box. I normally choose the option to stage the image first. This way it is ready to go when I want to actually update or I can schedule the upgrade. When I upgraded from 6.6.0 to 6.6.1 it took about 10-15min to install...which doesn't include the image download.

Can configure layer 2 ether channel on ftd 1010 ?

I'd try to configure a L2 VLAN on the FTD box, configure an etherchannel, assign your desired physical interfaces to the etherchannel, and then give that etherchannel interface access to just that L2 VLAN.
