Honestly, when I saw The Fosters and Jessica Jones were up against Game of Thrones and Teen Wolf, I immediately thought: Shit, they've already lost. It's a shame really because these shows are extremely well made and have great storylines (so do the first 4 seasons of GoT, wouldn't be able to say if Teen Wolf does too, I gave up after a couple of episodes), which don't have a huge following since they're both viewed upon as very genre specific shows. Most people that have even heard of The Fosters think of it as a cheesy gay teen drama, whereas Jessica Jones is viewed as just another superhero show but with a female star now. I wish you'll still to the both of them, even if you do it after GoT and Teen Wolf. Both shows showcase a lot of very grounded issues you don't normally see in other tv shows, and when you do see them, they're usually very in your face. Sure, The Fosters does some in your face things too once in a while, like the "so you're dykes" convo in this episode, but usually, it feels much more organically. I could give you tons of examples where this wasn't the case, for this issue alone already. One example that stuck with me the most, and I won't get into any spoilers, was when Lena has a conversation with someone who is questioning their sexuality specifically, but to that person it felt more like they were questioning their identity as a whole. Because Lena went through the same thing earlier in life, she doesn't just go say "Sweety, you're gay/lesbian and that's okay, people can be awful sometimes", like you'd see in many other shows who just throw some LGBTQ+ character in the bunch to reach their quota and feel relevant; instead she comforts that person, saying: there's people in the world who are afraid of anything that's unlike them, but that you shouldn't try to hide anything from those people either, because when you do, you'll be lying to yourself and you will be angry with yourself, which ultimately leads to you feeling that the things that made you different and a unique individual in the first place make you feel wrong or abnormal. However, she also understands that you may want to hide it from some people, because so does she, even to this day. The show realizes that the mums aren't perfect human beings either. They are insecure to a degree, don't know how to deal with situations sometimes or don't act as perfect angels who know everything, and they fight... a lot, but ultimately, just like their kids, they learn from their experiences and evolve both as fictional characters but also as human beings. The characters are written so well that after a couple of episodes, they achieve what barely any other type of representation does in modern day media, even though it should always strive towards that: you forget that they're gay, you forget that there's anything out of the ordinary about them, you just see them as a couple and when someone points out that they have a different "lifestyle" as some of the other characters call it, you're kinda shocked because you start wondering "Did I miss something? What's so weird about them?", and then you realize "Oh, they're gay. Right." And the same thing goes for them being a foster family, you just forget about it after a while until the plot mentions it again and then you realize the kids are not all their biological children. Beside homosexuality and foster care it also tackles issues like addiction, police brutality, gender roles, stalking, rape (both man on female as female on man!), physical and emotional abuse, poverty, transgenders and relationships between straight people and transgender people, child neglection, the roles of the biological parents of foster children, unrightful imprisonment, racism, immigration and so much more. Jessica Jones on the other hand is equally as subtle, if not even moreso than The Fosters. It's not the story of a superheroine, not in the slightest. After a while, you forget that she even has superpowers. It's about someone who tried to do something good for other people and got rewarded for it by nearly a year of psychological (SPOILERS: and physical) abuse. Keep in mind, Kilgrave doesn't compel you to do something, what he does is make you want to do something. If he says "Kill your parents" you don't pull the trigger because he said so, he plants the thought in your mind that you WANT to kill your parents, you pull the trigger because you WANT to shoot them, and when they're dead, that thought is still in your head. You remember all of it, and after months of being under his influence, mentally, the line between what you would've wanted to do if you hadn't been influenced by Kilgrave, and what you wanted to do in the moment start to fade. Jessica said it perfectly "Kilgrave leaves a trail of broken people behind", and you can clearly see that when you compare pre-Kilgrave Jessica and post-Kilgrave Jessica. She feels like she's partly to blame, so she stays away from other people, even Trish, to make sure nothing bad can happen to herself and to those other people. And to keep her from getting depressed, she drinks... a lot... just so that her mind gets to be on cooldown for a while and doesn't have to think about the awful things that happened to her 24/7. Jessica is anything but a superhero, and she sure as hell doesn't ever want to be one. What she is, is one of the most realistic people ever put on television: She's scared. She cares about people, and loves the people around her so much, even when they've given up on themselves, because Jessica knows what that feels like. But when the threat from her past comes back, all of the things she felt suddenly come back to her: the years of abuse, the help she never received from anyone, it's already a wonder that Jessica got away from Kilgrave in one piece, so when he's back, she's scared as hell. She's scared for herself and for the people she loves, but ultimately she recognizes that no one else will help the people Kilgrave is affecting, everyone will think they're out of their minds. She knows he'll create more Jessica's, and that 90% of them won't get away the way she did, so she steps up... still scared, though. I hope that by watching the pilots, you've realized how amazing these shows are Juli, and sure, they're may as popular as Game of Thrones or Teen Wolf, but they are definitely worth reacting to. And even if you don't, please watch them in your spare time anyway, they are so much more than just tv shows.
This is really important show. They talk about a lot of important things like foster care and others.
