I feel that's a business decision. They can use them as 'exclusive' offerings on expensive models and charge 10 times their value for them - they have the brand strength to get away with it.

@@UltimateEngineering yes he is just stubborn. But interestingly he only intended on having bird inlays for maybe 10-20% guitars. But then players kept wanting them so he agreed to their requests. But when it comes to SS or other feature changes he will not budge. I hate the bird inlays and wish he stuck to original plan

Stainless steel is the way to go. My Strandberg has stainless and after 16 months of pkaying everyday for 6-8 hours of play a day, no fret wear. I do my own fret work on my strats, teles, LP's ect and fret work day is so much work. Sometimes it turns into fret work week. My next new neck, will have stainless steel frets.

Listened to the whole video, then went back to the beginning and listened to the intro again. Sweet! As for SS frets, I’m an intermediate guitar player at 65 for about 4 years. With some Classic Vibes and Epiphones to rotate through I probably won’t need new frets of any type for a while. However, I’ll keep SS frets in mind.

Hey Taylor. Where are you located? I am in the Ottawa area and I just found a guy who does stainless for only $50 more than a regular read job. You’d probably be looking around $350 if the guitar doesn’t have any fretboard binding. I’m getting my number one Strat style guitar refretted right now with him in stainless steel. He just did some work on one of my acoustic guitars and I was extremely impressed. His name is Jerome Jeffries and the shop is called Glebe guitar repair. I have one other telecaster style guitar that came to me brand new with stainless steel Frets, and I have been gigging it hard for the past three years, with no discernable fret where.. really love stainless from my experience so far. I never heard that telecaster without stainless steel, but I’ve got to say it’s a great sounding guitar, and I play it a lot. Feel is incredible in my humble opinion. This is why I’m having that number one Strat redone right now. Hope this may be helps

Is there not a happy medium that’s still more durable than nickel and easier to cut/file/install? There’s no metal that’s harder than nickel and softer than stainless?
Although, is cost an excuse anymore? 🤔 I mean, there are now lots of cheaper guitars with standard stainless from Eart, HB, etc. If it’s easily doable by the cheaper import brands to offer them as a standard feature, it would seem the big brands are making excuses - it IS more money and more labor intensive, but obviously not to the point that they want us to believe when it’s perfectly doable by those sitting in the cheap seats lol.
That’s a good topic for an upcoming Casino vid: how come cheaper budget guitars can offer stainless frets as a standard feature, but the big brands can’t/won’t? 😉😊

Nobody ever changes the strings before a refret to compare sound. I have done a few SS fret jobs and they are a pain in the ass to trim, level, and crown. I’m sure it will last longer between fret dressings. I can’t tell the a big brightness difference silver and stainless. If your slow handed like me you should notice longer sustain. Play them and give your thoughts 10, 20, 30 gigs on them.

Hey, Jon. I hope you don't mind me adding my two-cents worth, now that I have had some time in with my Number One, after the conversion. I realize results may differ, so let's establish that right off the bat. My overall take is overwhelmingly positive for established players, perhaps only slightly less for beginners - as it might not bear out the added expense anywhere before reaching intermediate level. These types of mods are for people who have already mastered the fretboard to some degree, in my opinion. For established players, buckle up, mates. You're gonna have a blast. Anywho, here goes:
I am a newly-minted stainless convert. But be forewarned. You will have to redial-in your stuff afterwards. The tone profile, or, more aptly, sound profile that you established on nickel will be noticeably reshaped. It's not a matter of belief. But, and here's the thing, when you acclimate to the new situation, there are vastly expanded sound-qualities within the new profile that are not obtainable with nickel. While it's true that you need a certain degree of audiological acuity (if that's even a thing) to fully appreciate it, it exists. If I had to quantify it, I would call it "spank." The tone will have a metallic spank especially playing rhythm as well as sliding up and down the fretboard during leads, especially on the wound strings. Some of this will probaly have to be reined in, to regain a semblance of familiarity with your original tone. The best way to begin is to dial back the treble on pretty much everything, then figure out where to ever-so-gradually add it back. It is in the adding-back process that you begin to discover the new and much fuller range of tonal qualities that steel frets add to your palette. The conversion is a must do for any accomplished musician, in my estimation. I am beginning to suspect many of our iconic, top-tier players have been using them for quite some time, unbeknownst to many of us. I am open to questions from your subscribers. Be well, brother. Your encouragement changed my life. Holy crap.

Sounds worth it to me! Sounds great! The smooth feel and the longevity of stainless steel is totally worth it. I always prefer to buy them that way, and any refret will always be stainless steel.
And I can all but guarantee that in a blind test no one on earth could detect any difference in the miced cab sound. Acoustically, in the room, if unplugged or with the amp low enough, maybe, but in a blind test I'll still bet not reliably.

Nickel frets get be heat treated to make them harder or they can be put into a cryogenic freeze process to also create hardness. I think it depends on what grade of nickel they are using in the fret. Likewise with stainless, there would be some stainless steel frets that would not be good quality stainless and once they wear out it will just wear your tools out faster.

I had it done on a regular Strat and I really liked then. Then I tried a custom shop Tele and ended up selling it to get a custom shop Tele. I did not recoup the extra money I put out for the ss frets so that would be only thing I would caution somebody about getting them. As best you can make sure it’s a forever guitar.

@@guitarjonathan Plus I don't like taking my guitars to luthiers any more (since I can do basic setups), unless there's a real issue. After every setup or fret level they do, guitars never play the same, and I have to tweak it all over again to try get the same string tension and tone and feel, and sometimes I've ended up selling guitars afterwards. Stainless steel frets largely solves that, too. I would take a new one to a luthier if there were issues with the nut or something, but not after I've dialed one in how I like it.

One of the downsides of living in the jungle. I want to go with stainless-steel, but I would need someone who I can trust. It would also be nice to get the neck plek'd beforehand, and the frets plek'd after installation. But that ain't going to happen because the up-front investment costs are too much for the guitar techs here to handle. I'm not saying I will or won't convert, but there will be decidedly more risk involved, and the finished product might not be all it otherwise would have been.
I've got about a year left on my medium jumbos - the ebony fretboard, having been rubbed to as smooth a finish as it's ever going to get, now cries out for glass-like stainless. If I were anywhere in the developed world, I would just pay Sweetwater or someone in the UK to do everything. I am closer to Japan, so I suppose I could ship it there. We'll see. But I am leaning toward making the investment.
Lastly, I do wonder how my D'Addario NYXL 9's will hold up wearing (bending) against the unyielding steel of the new frets. I change them the first week of every month, so I wouldn't imagine much of a potential for wear-induced breakage over such a short period. Oh, and all this would be happening to '21 Epi Modern. A flawless example if ever there was one. _And_ it has a functional (read: durable) finish. Which if you find yourself anywhere near the tropical equator, becomes essential.
If you or anyone else has any thoughts or comments, Jon, please chime in. Take care and have a good new year.

    • @guitarjonathan
      @guitarjonathan  ปีที่แล้ว +1

I don’t think you’ll have any problems with string life, especially if you change them the first of every month anyways. I hope you find someone who can do it. I’m still really happy with the change.

I felt after 15 days or so of using d'addario strings regular 10s, there is definitely some kind of ping when bending and holding the note. Fret job is smooth or excellent to bend. There is some sizzle added to the note. I have recently converted to stainless after years of using nickel frets. Overall feel is smooth and notes are faster on stainless definitely. Humbucker guitars will be absolutely fine with SS. for Single coil strats and teles can be harsh/jarring for some people especially with semi old strings.

I'm just now ordering a Musikraft 10/56 Tele neck with 7100 Stainless Jumbo frets for my latest build. I thought it over a long time before deciding on the SS, more than anything else I'm hoping to save myself time by not needing to level, crown and polish my frets as often.
