I appreciate Jack's response to the heirloom watch question. The only heirloom watch that I would want to inherit would be one that reminded me of the person who passed it down. Buy a watch you love, wear the @#%! out of it, and pass it down to someone who will remember you when they see it. If you buy a Daytona because you asked the internet what to buy for an heirloom, but you never connected with the watch personally, your heirs are just going to show up on antique roadshow one day looking to cash it in.
I was at a jeweler once when some grandkids came in with their grandfather's early 80s Submariner looking for a payday. They walked out with $8k and lost a connection they'll never get back.
I so love this channel and I think Mr Forester is so knowledgeable, witty and a fabulous host. I’m from India and it’s so cool that HMT was mentioned. What’s even cooler is that I recently restored my dads 1963 HMT Kohinoor watch and have been wearing in for the last 10 days. It was the watch I saw on him when I was growing up and probably my most prized possession :) thank you Hodinkee and keep up the great work!
FYI - The word calibre in relation to watches derives from their use in the calibration of other mechanical items, sometimes other watches or town clocks (back in the day). As watches were either time tellers or a ‘calibration device’ the word slowly just crept in as a general term for firstly a pocket watch then the actual mechanism of the watch itself.
Great video Jack, I would recommend buying an HMT watch directly from their watch museum in Bengaluru, India, or from their online store. They still make the watches in small numbers and sometimes wait times for few models could be months :P One of the most affordable manual wound watches around the world.
Heeeeeeeey Hodinkee!!! You ever think about sitting Jack a little further out from the seamless backdrop that you just unrolled prior to taping???? 😁😁😁
HMT Ltd was incorporated in the year 1953 by the Government of India as a Machine Tool manufacturing company with the name Hindustan Machine Tools Ltd. The company was incorporated with the objective of producing a limited range of machine tools required for building an industrial edifice for the country. Over the years the company diversified into Watches Tractors Printing Machinery Metal Forming Presses Die Casting & Plastic Processing Machinery CNC Systems & Bearings. 3 years ago I was lucky enough to get hold of a NOS HMT Janta - Hindi word for “The people”. Citizen had licensed their caliber 0201 hand wound movement for manufacturing most of the models that rolled out of the factory.
An heirloom watch is something that you like. Doesnt cost an arm and leg. Just about right that you wouldnt mind getting it banged up, not that you will, while doing explorations, or maybe something crazy, memorable. Bottomline is heirloom watches are supposed to be filled with memories good or bad but hopefully good. It should tell a story.
I’d rather be passed down some land if my parents were to spend $20k on an heirloom. I’d even be happy to take over the mortgage. $20k on a watch is a waste, imo.
Really enjoying this new series with Jack but the repeated prompts to subscribe and turn notifications on cheapens the feel of the video, in my opinion. Otherwise, this is great stuff!
An heirloom watch will be worn by multiple owners of different ages, physique, and fashion styles. It should have a classic design, be of medium size, and go well with any clothing. Maybe a gold Tank Louis? JLC steel perpetual watch is $20,000 I think.
I have a watch that I inherited from my uncle and it has a forever place in my case. It's a beat up plastic timex with a dirty New Mexico silver & turquoise held together by some wire and string. He wore up until his death and Ive kept it that way. Heirlooms are not always valuable except to the owner.
If I think I’d like to work with watches as a recent university graduate, where should I look? I’ve been applying to jewelry stores that appear to have a competent selection of watches for a while now.
Hodinkee should now explore hmt in more depth, maybe reintroduce it to the world. To the author, AFAIK - for 70's you can go for Vijay. Come to late 80's and 90s your options would open up immensely - Kailash, Rachna, to hq (quartz) series. Also, if you are sticking to 70s, then perhaps you can go for Automatic (U) for unidirectional, then there was Rajat. And hey, don't forget Janata/Jawahar. They both were pretty popular with students, especially Jawahar. Another option is to get a name watch, since most of the hmt watches produced in late 70's to well today have popular indian names. So maybe get a character's name watch/ or somebody he adores. Or maybe something like Rachna - this could be his love's name and it is a square watch, probably produced in the 80's - how about that?...
Why not make them longer we appear to have a lot of questions in that pile jack keeps pulling from also I’ve started asking anyone I meet what watch they have and why they have picked it ??
I was once the only factory authorized HMT importer to the US. Use any HMT you want to represent the 70's...it does not matter. Choose a Pilot or Janata. All use the same movement which was licensed to them by Citizen. They are all extremely unreliable as they are made by the same Indan government company that makes bulldozers. I imported somewhere around 3,000 watches and most of them broke in the first year. Most "vintage" HMT's on ebay are actually repaints if current models. "Current" is a misnomer as there is no telling when a lot of HMT are made.
I can listen to Jack talk about watches for 20 minutes, make this longer!
I second this.
Agreed!
All I listen to all day every day is watches !!

True
Notice that he raised his left hand to show the Rolex Gold DD gifted from Ben Clymer when he answers the question. 😀👍
When I die my watches go with me to Valhalla

Hodinkee talking about HMT watches... wow, Thanks Jack!
I know right!! Amazing
HMT featuring in Hodinkee😮 it’s like an Indian rocking a Vostok! Lets gooo!
Patriotic feels! Haha
The founders of HMT were alumni from the Engineering that I have the privilege to study at. Great to see them being mentioned here. Cheers!
Where did he study?

Wallet friendly 10 - 20k lol
Fun approach and a legend in his own right. Jack has a quiet confidence and great voice for the narration!
Yes he does.

This is the content that I come to a TH-cam for!
Thanks for keeping this short. KISS principle. There are so, so many long videos out there.

The video is free. I feel like anything free is gonna come along with some sort of ad.
jack loves this polo/ sweater combo

Absolutely, brutally delightful 😊😊
Not necessarily my place to say, but... I just don't see Jack as a "gold watch" guy. 🤔
Read his work on the Gold Day-Date, you can see his intimate connection with the particular watch.
Hodinkee CZECH REPUBLIC FOREVER

How many people with watches do you meet out and about. I hardly ever see others with watches
Loads but it’s hard to identify them without getting a good look at the dial
HMT ‘Kohinoor’ may fit the bill.
Awesome video.
lol, at Jack showing off his watch while responding to the Heirloom watch question. Hint! Hint!
Good show guys, the day date your wearing is fantastic!!! Too bad it’s sooooo expensive, I’d like one but like $18k cheaper
Wouldn’t we all lol
I love this.
So does this mean pre-owned HMT prices will start to soar, now that Hodinkee’s mentioned the brand?
Not unless it's a rolex or have some relation to.
Jack is the 💣

But my father's HMT worked for decades.
I misheard HMT watches as HYT, the hydro horologists.. 🥲
wonderful
How does one go about asking Jack a question....
Carrier pigeon
Hello
Heirloom sauce
Rolex LoL. Like charging Ferrari money for a Chevy.
I'm sure it seemed funnier on the page
😀
