    Really enjoyed this video Peter, it shows you don't need fancy, expansive equipment to go portable. It can be cheap and fun.

    Great video - I do enjoy my buddipole/stick and not being able to have a 'permenant' antenna at home, the buddipole and stick provided a good initial compromise antenna. I do find the whips are quite fragile esp when compared to the simplicity of just a wire antenna, whilst i'm careful i've sadly lost 2 of the quite expensive poles, and having the buddipole guying kit is an abosolute must for buddipole configurations. For portable I still keep my buddipole, its so versitile, but it really takes alot of 'be very careful' around it, for home i've favoured the dx-commander and multiband end fed antennas.

    looking a cool dude Peter! Very good advise and I would echo all your points; add in picnics and getting out into the great outdoors. I tend to end operating late autumn. However someone once said there is no such thing as bad weather...
    Can't wait to get out and about once we are given the all clear to do so. My KX3 remains a fantastic piece of kit and I tend now to use EFHW, MFJ 1979 on a decorators pole and a Buddistic. My verticals work well when elevated off the ground with 1 or 2 tuned elevated radials - all very easy to accommodate depending on members of the public. Always ask "is that a CB?" Fibreglass poles (7 meter type) take up very little space now I've modified the guying arrangement ensuring its all very safe.
    What are we going to do once you return to work? I will miss all the great advise and inspiration you've brought over the past months. 73 de M0AZE Mike

    Totally agree about the end fed antenna, so easy to setup. Just throw up a line into the nearest tree and you are set.

    Thank you Peter for another interesting and informative video. Agree it's such a treat to get out in the fresh air and away from the horrendous noise, particularly on the lower bands. I use a linked 40/20 dipole from Sotabeams when portable, a resonant dipole takes a lot of beating IMHO.

      Noise - yes, a very good reason to give portable operation a try. I have found that, usually, you don't have to go very far out of town for noise to drop to near zero. Hard to believe. However, sometimes, a few hundred metres can be enough.

    I've used the Buddistick at my QTH for years and it works great, even with the counterpoise laying on the ground. My only complaint, I struggle getting those clips in the coil, great video ..... k6sdw

    Many thanks for this vlog.
    I am ex-RN Submarines Comms. I am v.interested in becoming an Amateur Radio Ham to put my CW back to use. The Buddy stick is certainly an aerial I shall keep in mind. I plan on having a transceiver setup onboard a narrowboat (57ft steel tube 4mm thick at the deck head!). The icom-705 has got me interested as vhf would be useful onboard aswell. As soon as I am qualified and setting up I shall no doubt be visiting your Portsmouth shop. Thanks again. Now subscribed to you.

    Hi Peter... Nice video and some very sound advice. (It looked like it was a Buddy Pole you were showing us not a buddy stick). I favor wire antennas as they are light.. 1/2 wave fed with a 49:1 works very well... or a 3d printed loaded whip... I think you might have one of those somwhere ... :-)

    The handy good old Mag-mount, the all weather aerial, well almost, I had one slide off when I came out and the car roof was covered in frost, I didn't think much of it as one time it was frozen to the roof, but this time it came out of the car and of course it was slightly warmer than the roof frost, so I drove off and about three to five minutes later I heard this woos clatter, bang and then bouncing clanging noises. Yes, the aerial and Mag-mount slid off the roof and down the back of the car, slid off the boot (Trunk for the Americans) run out of coax, slid sideways and onto the road and was bouncing along beside me! Hoe it didn't do any damage is beyond me, but I might not have noticed anyway the old car I was running. Mind you it was a big steel whip, almost 9ft of it. It held normally if you didn't do motorway speeds, 60 was fine but above that was fatal, trees were also a danger, so was multi-story car parks, but that is another story!

    Peter how would you use a HF Amplifier Mobile? Do you need a tuner after the amp or at what swr would you need matching or do you tune before the amp? Also what amps are there for mobile static use? Ps love the vids. Thanks

    Hi Peter some great ideas does the magnetic mount on the roof of your car mean you do not have to connect the counterpoise at all with the buddi stick

      Probably a used FT-817 is cheapest option. Depends on your budget.

    Are there any issues using radials with a mag mount to increase the amount of grounding it provides? Or are all RF grounds equal?

    • @watersstanton
      @watersstanton  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Adding radials can usually help and tgere are no issues. 73 Peter.

    Would like to know if you use both extensions of the buddy stick between the mag mount loading coil and radiator

    • @watersstanton
      @watersstanton  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi there. The bottom extensions make less difference than you might think. They will make the antenna a little more efficient and probably improve the bandwidth. But frankly you can leave them off completely and still make contacts. 73 Peter
