I have always thought that the SG was one of the best body designs EVER...that thin body with all the sculpting...and it looks great in almost ANY color you can throw at it!!! But it just seems to be a guitar that fly's under peoples radar year after year after year...it never gets the same level of love that the Strat's,Tele's,LP's and even 335's enjoy...I still love it tho:^))
With how well Epiphone's quality and consistency has been, Gibson should come out with a "Inspired by Epiphone" line of guitars. I'd buy that for a dollar.
Unfortunately it would push the price so high most people wouldn't buy it. Here in the UK there is a company that offers the Fool paint job for your SG for £500GBP. The Vintage brand offered a Fool version of there SG but it cost almost £800GBP.
Fit and finish looks killer at the price point. Love that wood grain. And sounds dirty. I like it. For a blunt instrument like the SG I could give up the Gibson logo on the headstock in this case.
Love the humor that you include with your gear reviews, you've earned yourself a subscriber, although I did feel obligated partially because you're a fellow Bostonian according to this video. ;)

Great review! Quick question...hows the neck dive on it? I know pretty much all SG's have it...but in my experience the Epiphone SGs always had more neck dive than the Gibson's. I have a 2012 Gibson 61' reissue and would love to add this to my collection for gigging and keep my Gibson at home. Thanks.
I have a Gibson SG Standard and it barely has any neck dive. Luck of the draw really. A wide suede strap can help a lot with SGs that do have neck dive though.
J Osburn I have a Gibson HP SG 2019 and it neck dives noticeably more than my 2020 epiphone vibrola 61 SG. I am still looking for solution will try a wide grippy strap next I think
The only thing I don't like about this guitar is the striped mahogany veneer on the front and back. I would prefer it without any veneer or just a solid color paint job.
I owned a Gibson SG for a few years, but the batwing pickguard version.....I moved it on. I would definitely consider one of these....the TV yellow Special is on my radar too!
I'm not sure how consistent current Epiphone is vs current non-Custom Shop Gibson, but if my JJN Epi Old Glory is any indication of overseas quality, they're definitely in the running. That JJN has an absolute killer neck and fun af to play--only needs a bit of fret end smoothing. As far as SGs go... you can get a P90 loaded SG Classic for around $700 that sounds / plays / feels like a Custom Shop and has proper fret nibs too.

Mike Richeson I think your wrong. I took a chance got the vibrola version for looks and extra weight on that side to alleviate neck dive. It’s very solid and very stable. Certainly doesn’t feel cheap in any way . It doesn’t move when not using the tremolo . I have Floyd roses on many expensive guitars and they are all more fiddly than this. It’s stays in tune well even after using the Trem in comparison to Floyd roses.
Neck dive? Didn't hear you mention the notorious SG neck dive. Anyways, I know you said this is not a full review and you prob ain't gunna do the mod, but just for what it's worth (a lot to me), I fixed neck dive on my Gibson SG 61 Reissue by what I call 'doing the Mr Tony Iommi". That is, move the strap button to the top horn. Yes, scary I know, but if one is careful and eye-balls his Epi Signature model to see where/direction to pre-drill, then it's an easy as pie mod/fix to do to eliminate the SG neck dive.
@@racerx1918 It's a glued in neck, the screw is irrelevant. If you're worried nevertheless, then screw in another screw or leave the original strap button in place and use a new strap button on the top horn. It's the best way to get rid of the SG neck drop. I've tried various methods until I noticed what Mr Tony Iommi did. Good enough for Mr Iommi, good enough for me and everyone else. My SG is a keeper, I don't care if a potential purchaser isn't pleased, it's not for sale.
Are the top and back veneers that you can tell? Great striped wood, but it doesn’t seem to continue beyond the surface and into the contours and sides.
Could be a photo finish. Adding a veneer sounds expensive for an import guitar, I know they do it with the Les Paul’s but with the body cuts on an SG you would be able to see the veneer too easily.

The cover between the neck pickup and the neck just looks weird for me... Wonder what's the reason they put it in every new SG- model this year? Edit. It seems like in the old models the neck pickup was right next to the neck and now there's a little gap, so that's why... Maybe it would've looked weird if there was just empty space.. dunno. Also some of the gibson models have a big pickguard so it also covers that whole area.

Jon Hollis Yes. Exactly and I don’t think real mahogany is used anywhere but this doesn’t mean other woods are not equally as good. You can see the veneer even from even a distance. I’ve played one in a shop while testing an amp which is what caused me to buy one because it was really good value but the one I eventually got was an older one from the 90s. It was pure accident because I’m left handed and the Epi was what they had left handed in the shop. I assumed Epiphone was not good but this is not the case. However, the 90s one I have is just better put together and finished. It is several pieces of wood on the body but no veneer. The wood looks quite good.
