  • While many of us associate Bing Crosby with the holiday season, he was more than just a carol singer. As an actor, singer, and comedian, he dominated both record sales and the box office-but behind the scenes, his life was defined by loss, heartbreak, and scandal.

Bing Crosby is a prime example of how people in the public eye can be quite the opposite in private. Other examples are Joan Crawford, Jerry Lewis and the most extreme example, O.J Simpson.

He had been drinking heavily throughout this period which was confirmed by the gentlemen who worked on the book. Gary was reinterviewed years later in 9 hrs of taped conversations in which he was challenged regarding research the interviewer had done vs what was in the book. Gary noted he couldn't remember writing certain things as he had been drinking. The other three sons defended Bing after the books release and Mary explained how she spoke to Gary afterwards and he told her WHY the book was written $$$$ and that it wasn't really how it happened. Funny to think that Gary noted in an interview regarding his own child rearing that he spanked and realised the need for rules etc.

No, Bing Crosby had amassed a fortune, but he put the money in trust for his children.

Only one son of his first marriage received money and he died within 4 years of receiving it.

@@user-fq8rs7rz3iOMG...Bing had trust funds set up for each son which they received upon turning 21. A small fortune, Gary had more because of Bing recording with him. After Dixie passed Bing apparently added to what she left and the money the boys received was invested. These investments provided for the boys long after Bing passed until they eventually went bust and shortly after the youngest unalived himself. Bing noted he brought houses, cars etc for each son, bailed them out of trouble time and again. He allegedly left money when they turned 65 as when he passed he thought each son was doing well. That money was to take care of the boys in old age...nothing horrid about that. The boys were not seemingly good with money and wasted a lot. I think Bing was thinking long term about his boys welfare. Bing made sure his boys received payments for tv, etc appearances which he put away for each of them. I've also read he turned down a pretty substantial fee and requested the money go to his boys. Why do we only listen to half the story.

Talk about twisting a story. Rosemary Clooney adored Bing..he came to her rescue during hard times. I've seen that interview, she never insinuated Bing was snooty etc, what she noted was important visitors came to the set and the cast...purely for show...were expected to reperform final sequence...it had been filmed and was finished, but the cast were expected to redo it just for show. Bing treated everybody equally, never fawned or played the studio game. He had done his professional duty and went off to play golf. Nothing snooty about that he just didn't want to bow to the studio. Same as when he stood up to the big wigs in support for Louis Armstrong. Rosemary always spoke beautifully of her friendship with Bing something she cherished. She did note it wasn't always easy for people to get to know Bing...he was a very private person .. but she spoke of the best thing that came out of making White Christmas was her deepening friendship with Bing. She spoke about Bing on a number of occasions...they were like brother and sister, Bing trusted her.

Very informative fascinating. So many facts. 😔 sad and heartbreaking for the kids who grew up and sustained all collateral damage of the relationship and damage of a tattered marriage. Bing crosby sounds like a selfish and thoughtless guy. A cheater. Most guys are. Terrible father. Abusive. Sorry that some of the sons took their own life. So sad. Waiting for the movie of crosby life to come out. They have so many about judy garland. I saw Hepburn bogart. Brad pitt etc. Even Crawford had her movie. Mommie dearest. Crosby needs his movie. 😊

Not true about Joan Crawford, by the way. Everybody who knew Joan really liked her because she was a kind and generous person who also was involved in a number of charities. Most of her estate went to various charities. The reason Joan cut Christopher and Christina out of the will is because she had already spent a great deal of money trying to help them; in other words, she basically spent their inheritance on them. Eventually, they did get something to the tune of 50 grand after suing. Christina has always been bent on revenge because she didn't succeed while her mother did.

All families have problems. He had a lovely voice, and he used it to bring the world together and make a good living out of it. All families suffer from some kind of abuse in the eyes of others. Booze doesn’t help any situation. We have to accept that all our Parents did the best they could do in their own situations. Children are resilient. Be a grown-up and save your teenage earnings and move out at age 18, and be your own Master and do better in your new life of independence. Be master of your own situation, and forgive your Parents and you’ll be so much happier for it.

Disagree there. Sometimes you do not have to forgive your parent or parents for being abusive. It is a choice. A parent should never ever abuse a child. That child grows to be an adult and probably will be messed up unless they get therapy. And even so there could be collateral damage. 😢😢😢

Forgiveness isn’t about you. It’s what grown-ups do. Forgiveness is power. It’s a setting free and a letting go. This is why moving out of your family home is so important. One’s parents might say….oh honey don’t leave, we love you living with up as an adult. lol……..NOT! By being master of your own situation, one can see all the same issues in keeping a home and grown children can say at a Sunday dinner together, Thanks Mom and Dad. Since I have my own place, I can relate to all that you did for me. This is music to a parents ears. Forgiveness makes all rough places plain. Forgiveness straightens out the crooked in the soul because one is freed from whatever issues one may’ve gone through.

Well, let’s see…the mother was a hopeless drunk, passing out and obviously neglecting her children. Yet none of the boy’s problems are attributed to her. They themselves seem to have transferred all their rage at dad. All blame goes to Bing, even though he had to deal with the stress of all his wife’s issues. Since his second batch of kids were fine, perhaps one should reconsider this character assassination.

It is the meanness and spitefulness that would have affected his sons.

It sounds to me like Garry was a gold digger and when ge didnt get money off his dad he came up with bullshit about an abusive father. As far as I can see all Bing did was try to lead them along the right path by not making them ve above themselves just because he was Bing Crosby. Nothing wrong in that. All these nadty things his son came up with is just to tarnish his dads memory because ge never got what he wanted. You cant blame Bing for 2 of them killing themselves if they were all drunks. Let's see. All four sons never consistently held a job in their lifetime. None were able to form stable relationships. Two committed suicide. One castigated his father in a book. The one son Phillip who supported his father was an alcoholic, was arrested for drunk driving numerous times, and was married four times. Facts are facts. Two sons supported Gary's accusations. Philip admitted that his father used to beat them. The children from Bing's third marriage who support Bing weren't even born when the abuse happened. They have no idea. Bing was such an *sshole that he put his sons inheritance in a trust that they couldn't access until they reached 65 years of age. Only one made it that far. Even in death, Bing sought to control his sons.
