Thank you so much for producing this video. My MSI GT72 from 2016 had a dying battery. Worse yet, the keyboard was dying a notoriously common death: The C, M, and SHIFT keys became intermittent which I have seen at least 5 other people post about. Although your video stopped short of replacing the keyboard, it got me close enough to take it the rest of the way. Your video was great for tearing it all down, and walking it backward was vital to getting everything back together with the right screws, in the right places, at the right times.
    Tips from my own experience...
Heat sink assembly: Have some thermal paste handy. Once I removed the sinks the factory paste was very dried out and would not conduct heat very well if I just screwed it back together as-is. I wiped off most of the dried crusty stuff and applied a thin layer of thermal paste.
Battery replacement: Take the panel aside with the battery and heat the top side of the plastic with a hair dryer until it's *really* hot. Once that heat penetrates through the plastic the glue strips on the battery will release without a major fight. You don't want to risk damaging and shorting the battery cells, even if you think it's discharged.
Keyboard replacement: You'll have to unscrew the display hinges and pry them out of the way to get the keyboard out. Thank goodness MSI didn't "plastic-weld" the plastic nubs on the backside of this keyboard to hold it on like some other models, it's just encircled with a lot of screws. Note exactly how the ribbon cables line up, and the silver-braid grounding tape. I kept the tape from the old keyboard by separating the layers (destroying the already broken keyboard) to preserve it. The new keyboard I ordered came in 2 parts, they keyboard and the LED panel. The LED panel is a decal that you'll need to line up *perfectly*. Start from one side, and keep a close eye on the alignment as you work your way across. I have a hunch this is why some sellers sell these things in lots of 2 or 3 at a time. Make sure the ribbon cables are positioned so you can feed them back through the metal plate, too. When you get everything back together 100% correctly, the LEDs might not light, and the Steel Series app might say "Not Connected". Shut down and cold-boot the machine a couple times, and after it's been booted and running for a minute or so, keep pressing the SteelSeries LED hardware button many times. After at least a dozen presses, my keyboard suddenly lit up and the SteelSeries app connected.
Good luck to anyone else attempting this. This truly was the nastiest parts replacement I've ever successfully done on a laptop. MSI really loves to glue, snap, and sandwich things together. Granted, I do not do this for a living and my aging eyes slowed me down, nevertheless it took me a full 5 hours to do the entire job. I feel like I won a trophy when closed it up and have it working 100%.

Very Helpful, Thank You! Upgraded CD-ROM to SSD. I almost trashed it ... then I saw you knew the secret screw. Swapped CD-ROM front panel bezel to new SSD caddy... perfect!

Good video. Quick question. I've got the same model. Spilled coffee on the keyboard and now some keys stopped responding. What's the easiest way to change the keyboard? Can you change it by accessing externally like with other laptops? Or do I need to go through every step in your video to the end to be able to change it?
    Thanks in advance.

Unfortunately almost everything is mounted to the topcase. You need to disassemble everything 😢

Very useful for my laptop to mini PC project. Thanks for making the video.
Do you think it's possible to mount a pc cooling on the graphic/cpu?

I don’t think so. There is not so much space.

How much of a difference in disassembly is there between this model and the GT72VR?

My GPU fan doesn't want to spin up even at higher temperatures. I think it tries to give it more power because it makes a pop noise sometimes. Is the fan dead or something else could be the problem?

Got the same problem woth the CPU fan.
I think the motor is broken.
Would be nice to see if you can take the fan istelf apart.
I have only gotten so far to take of the Ventilators case but theres no screws to detach the actual Ventilator.
So I cant properly see of theres problems with the cable either

Hi. The entire GT7x series works without a battery, on the power supply itself.

It is most likely the power jack that needs to be replaced by a tech. It involves removing the power jack and replacing it with a new one.
