- Prince Siddhattha, on his quest for enlightenment, sought guidance from the two most renowned teachers of the time, Alara Kalama and Uddaka Ramaputta. Both followed the ascetic tradition and had attained the highest levels of meditation known at the time. Alara Kalama had attained the state of "the cessation of perception and sensation," while Uddaka Ramaputta had attained the state of "neither perception nor non-perception."
These were two levels of meditation belonging to the formless realm, the highest levels that ascetics of the time could reach. Prince Siddhattha studied at the ashram of Ālāra Kalama and gained valuable knowledge of meditation and spirituality. On his journey to find the path to liberation, Siddhattha embarked on the pinnacle of spiritual awakening.
