This is my great grandfather, its really nice to look on my heritage after finding loads of his old stuff since he passed in 2000 and its lovely to see a few people seeing him working for all my great aunts uncles and my nan who i see often
its incredible to have such documented recording of your great grandfather! 9 children too! i as a parent cant imagine more than 2 haha! i believe in modern words his job would be considered a "General Contractor?" or a "All Jobs Man" ? Sorry English is not my first language. and i apologize is it is worded wrongly( or worse rudely ).
@@LinksRoyal ''Odd Job'' is the term used for someone who does different jobs, usually small jobs - but this man certainly works very hard indeed at all his jobs...I'd not call being a Sexton {Gravedigger} an ''odd job'' as it is physically hard work.
That vans number plate is worth a bob or two ! On a more serious note, he may have a lot of kids, but at least he is making sure he can support them. I don't suppose the benefit system was so generous in 1961.
@@dababy9268 The sunny 1960's! It looks like good weather as the grave digging part shows quite dry earth. Well done to him for being such a grafter. Men were, back then. My father in law was the same..
Man after my own heart. I’m 50 years old with 7 kids and still working 7 days a week without ever claiming a benefit. Think I’ll stop at the 7 kids though
Fireman, postman, window cleaner, chimney sweep, grace digger, chip shop owner. I am surprised he has either the time or the energy to create 9 kids 🤣🤣
To those wondering why he had so many kids, it was quite common back then. In the 60's they only just started coming out with cures for things like polio, so people had many children just to beat the odds they would all be dead by adulthood. Because all the medicine came out, they had a very large amount of children they didn't expect to live. On top of that life was very grim and making babies was one of the only breaks people had. edit: forgot to mention the location being so close to the sea, he was probably eating a lot of sea food, which tends to be a potent aphrodisiac. They blame this on why London's population is so big.

my question is why would he need so many different jobs and how would he be able to schedule all the jobs? if certain jobs that didnt pay so much why would he work those? like ditch diggers get paid very little... mail carrier ditch digger fireman chimney cleaner fast food cook/cashier/waiter if we just go off of modern pay scales. if you're a mail man or fireman you're basically set. in this case this man worked both jobs. you don't need to be a ditch digger/chimney cleaner/ or fast food worker unless you were paid very little in 1961....
By the sounds of it, apart from helping him clean windows. His wife was a housewife, so the only income is from Stan for himself, his wife and nine children. That’s all the household bills and a massive weekly food shop. Plus clothing throughout the year for eleven people, and all other incidentals. There was also hardly any benefits compared to today.
@@TheEcholima07 For working woman today who are mothers, the cost of childcare is prohibitive..So they probably saved a lot of money by having Stan's wife staying home. Cooking and cleaning and ,mending for eleven people would be a huge amount of work, as very few homes had washing machines.. a Twin tub attached to the sink if you were lucky. Laundry was a huge effort.
@@Oakleaf700 but regarding the year that this film was recorded. That was the housewife’s role, it was a full time unpaid job. But it meant that the children were raised by their mother and not a childminder from pretty much birth.
Delivered 5 letters a day, cleaned 15 chimneys every year, rubbed a rag across 10 windows each month, and fried just enough for the 7 customers who bought chips once a week. Sam the Scam.

That's wonderful! Life was so different then...and looks much nicer. What an idyllic life it looked - but probably wasn't as lovely in reality ?

Yes! I noticed that...What a plate to have had!
His wife being Austrian is unlikely to have been a cousin either.
What an absolute Top man loved to have had a dad or grandad like this!! No mention of any benefits today's society put to SHAME
Marvellous!, 9 kids to pay for. I think Stan must have put himself into an early grave with all that going on, probably one he’d dug himself!.

You wonder how he had the energy to father 9 kids....
There were loads of purple hearts (amphetamine pills) around in the 60s. They were everywhere, even our local scout troop was on them.
I bet he was happy when his kids were old enough to start helping him

The OG gig worker.
He'd have to do more than that now to pay his council tax.
Hard at work in bed too💪

You do realize this film isn’t from the 14th century?
What’s missing from this film…just can’t put me finger on it🤔🤔🤔
If he kept it in his pants even just a little he wouldn't need 15 jobs. Good grief with 9 children. Poor wife!
