"Whose Fault Is Suffering?" + 4th Sunday in Lent (Fr. Mike's Homily)

- What does Jesus think of suffering?
If you grew up Jewish in the time of Jesus, you learned most if not all of the Torah. But at some point, you might have the opportunity to follow a rabbi and learn how he lived these truths from God. Jesus' disciples wanted to know what Jesus thought about suffering. Specifically, they wanted to know, "Who's fault is suffering? Who is to blame?"
Fr. Mike makes the case that the most important questions is not "why is this happening to me?" but "what am I going to do with this?"

Dear Fr. Mike, I'm so sorry for the loss of your mom. Please know that my husband and I will be keeping her in prayer as well as you and your family. I hope you can take some time to rest and process your grief. We know we are just passing through this life, but it is still so hard to be without our loved ones while we journey on this earth. And, no matter how old we are, when we lose a parent, there is that sense of feeling orphaned. May God bless you and give you peace. They with ears to hear, let them hear:
Through the Holy Spirit, God has put it on me to preach to those lost in the devil's deceit!
Hear me when I say, ye that are Catholic have been deceived and know not God. Ye worship Mary, praying to her; when God tells his to worship none other than him. It is idolatry.
Catholicism has its own Bible and teachings, which are blasphemous to the word of God: the Holy Bible. As ye follow the teachings of man and not God; ye hear the pope, but not Jesus, yet ye claim to be his disciples!
These are but a few things I named ye dwell within; there are many more. I tell you now to repent of your sins, accept Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior, and you'll receive the gift of the Holy Spirit upon asking the Father!
There are *NO* sub-divisions of Christianity. You're either a disciple of Christ or not. A Christian is someone who follows God's word, not a religion. Who obey the Father and follow his will; not man's nor their own heart's. Unless you keep Jesus' commandments, think not the Holy Spirit will dwell within you!
They who heed this message and did what was stated with an open heart to God...
Read the Holy Bible (KJV) daily and every time before you read, pray to the Father and ask:
"Lord I ask that you give me understanding of your word, that I interpret it the way you want me to, and none of my own. I ask you in Jesus' name, amen."

I feel a desire to share part of my story. I am a young woman (23) adopted with Fetal Alcohol Syndrome. Fr Mike when I heard, you say the words Fetal alcohol syndrome in your homily I got emotional. You are the first priest I have heard mention FAS. It’s not a topic I hear spoken about often. Thank you for your beautiful sermon. It impacted me in a positive way. I could relate to what you were talking about. I felt Jesus was speaking directly to me through you, Fr Mike.
I have had my struggles. I have good days and bad days that come in waves with my FAS. I have had days where I feel alone, I don’t fit in, compare myself to others. I am blessed to have received the support I needed from my parents and brothers who have accepted me the way I am and are by my side during those rough days. I know not everyone with FAS has that support.
The Gospel reading of the blind man is my favourite reading. Back in March 2020, I was going through a difficult dark time with my FAS. I was in my room and I felt angry at God. I couldn’t understand why he would allow me to have FAS. I remember asking him where was he when my birth mom was drinking alcohol? Did he care? Why can’t he take my FAS away? The hardest thing I struggle with is why didn’t he intervene when my birth mom drank with me? I was desperate for an answer. The following day,Sunday I was doing Lectio Divina. it was the Gospel reading of the blind man. I struggle with understanding the readings at church. When I read the story of the blind man, the message I got was so clear. I don’t know how to describe it. I understood and I heard Jesus saying to me Katia your FAS is to show God’s works through you. The blind man is the first reading I understood by myself and is special to me.
I like how you said, what if we focused on what good can come from this instead of focusing on the source of our pain. You’ve given me a positive way to look at my FAS.

The real meaning of suffering is that "the work of God might be visible" through a person (John:1-41), a very powerful message to remind us all that our shortcomings and suffering are Not anybody's faults, but we might discover something new in the process as in a case of a man with Lou Gehrig's Disease, and he uses the muscle of his eyebrow to move forward in life and to help others. So, we should always make the best of what we have in God's glory. Second, sorry to hear about your mom, Father Mike. I will say a prayer for her.

No matter how we try the truth is the world is more Jesus to us than we can be Christ to the world, to think otherwise is folly. When we do the corporal works of mercy we do it unto Jesus. And bearing each others burdens we fulfill the laws of Christ.
Suffering is a teacher and through it we can understand heaven and hell, a place of no suffering and a place of eternal torment, respectively. Those who suffer exceedingly will praise God all the more in the after life compared those who have little suffering. Suffering of the righteous and innocent is like Moses gaze toward the promise land.
No matter what, God's grace is sufficient. God is all that is needed.
Count your blessings not your possessions. Never possess anything for their is the danger they will possess you. We must see all things are blessings that God can give and take so be content in God's grace no matter what besets us so we can do all things through Christ who gives us strength. Blessed forever be the name of the Lord!
