As an American, the only thing I understood here was 'hamburger'.
It has a *slightly* different meaning in German. Here, it means a type of sandwich. Over there, it means a person from Hamburg.
The name of the sandwich comes from the name of the city Hamburg, where hamburgers (the sandwich) originated. Obviously the name for the people from Hamburg is also derived from the name of the city. So both the English and German versions have the same root.
Do the germans say both? Because once in Frankfurt I told someone I ate a frankfurter and they thought I was a murderer (I was referring to the frankfurter sausage!)
