  • Budokan: The Martial Spirit is a computer and video game released by Electronic Arts in 1989 for various platforms. The title is a versus fighting game, pitting the player against other martial artists in a great tournament known as the Budokan at the Nippon Budokan in Tokyo
The player begins the game as an apprentice, and initially practices skills in four dojos, either Shadow Fighting or sparring with an instructor. The weapons and combat methods available to the player consist of the following four:
Bo - Classic Japanese long staff.
    Karate - Okinawan unarmed combat.
Kendo - Japanese fencing utilizing a wooden sword.
Nunchaku - Swinging weapon with two shafts connected by a chain.
Once the player is confident in their skills, they can enter the Budokan where the player faces consecutive opponents equipped with various weapons (including, but not limited to, those available to the player). The difficulty gradually increases, with each opponent demonstrating increasing prowess when compared to the previous. Most opponents are male, except for one female armed with a naginata. The gender of a ninjutsu exponent with a masked face is presumably female, as they are named Ayako.
Each match is preceded by a briefing screen which provides the player with several words about the opponent. Based on this information (and past experience playing the game), the player then chooses which weapon to use in the upcoming conflict. Since each weapon can only be used in a limited number of matches, an overall strategy or plan is necessary in order to successfully defeat all opponents.
There are two primary attributes shown on the screen -- stamina and ki, the power of each blow. Active movements like jumping and delivering difficult blows decrease the ki, while blocking attacks increases ki. As a player's stamina decreases, movements slow down, making it more and more difficult to act. When the player's (or his opponent's) stamina is completely exhausted, the match ends.
The game features graphics and animations which are relatively advanced for the time period, attempting to provide a semi-realistic depiction of martial arts combat. The MS-DOS version of the game included 256-color graphics, and supported the AdLib Music Synthesizer Card as well as the Roland MT-32 MIDI synthesizer module for stereo music.

A beautiful game in so many ways. I was always terrible at it, but it part of my growing up with a DOS PC.

This game was ahead of its time in so many ways. I remember our computer science teacher would let us play it during recess at school.

I think what’s really great about these old games is that they proved then and continue to prove now that good gameplay and good storytelling is what makes for good video games. Yes, graphics and processing power are critical as well but, playing Budokan made you feel really connected to the character and martial arts even if you didn’t know anything about the fighting disciplines.

One of my first games ever as well ... great memories

There used to be an art to video games. You respect the person playing. You make the game play simple and easy. You include art that is handcrafted in that it is not rendered by algorithms. You try to create the ambient world surrounding the subject. You include the philosophy of the martial artist. Tao. Confucian. The music is tasteful and doesn't blow your ears away. What a treat. I am lucky to have grown up in a better time of video games.

I remember playing this on my dad’s old Windows 3.x-capable machine that he gifted me and my younger brother back when he got himself a computer that could run Windows 95. As young as we were at the time, we never got very far in this game, but we credit playing these old PC games back when we were little tykes for giving us our love of computers and electronics in general, as well as our seemingly gifted aptitude with them.

688 Attack Sub was the first to take advantage of 256 color VGA (there were a few games previous that took minor advantage of VGA like Dream Zone with the nearly photo-realistic black and white scenes at the beginning, or the 32 colors displayed on Rockford the Arcade Game). Budokan and Mean Streets came out not much longer after 688 Attack Sub.

such a cool game! I used to play it a lot, and learned all the moves with the various weapons. I was amazed with the variety of moves you could do. I also didn't have a soundcard and the voices from the speaker were so cool!

I think my Dad and I got to match 10. I always wondered what was past that. 20+ years later I got to find out! Thank you.
No 'special' moves used, maybe they was out mistake. I used to love the hight damage stuff, which was some key combo. My fingers can almost remember some of them!

Beautiful graphics, a deep love and knowledge of the martial arts, humorous caricatures of various film & martial arts heroes...what's not to like?
Well...unfortunately as great as the game is, it could have been better.
The whole Ki energy feature in theory was great, but in practice the only way to build it up was endless blocking. And without the Ki energy it was a grind to wear down any of the opponents.
Nice to see the ending though!

Nowadays you would have to buy costumes, weapons, lootboxes with extra-stamina, secret characters, different colors and beating the final boss is a 20-dollar-download that can be only killed with a golden 100-dollar-katana.
