Amazing! Saw her live years ago. The woman didn't use a microphone the entire time and had an orchestra behind her. What's even more poignant is that as I was walking up the hill to the front of the hall, I could hear her warming up. That was enough for me. I could have turned around and gone home totally satisfied.
She also sang this exact song at the 9/11 memorial service on 9/14/01. Interestingly enough Gerald and Betty Ford were present at that ceremony, one has to wonder if them listening to her sing brought them to the decision to have her sing the same song again at his funeral.
Nick Dirscherl yes, ms. graves did do this. it was by family request and i do not know for sure who made the request but likely it was betty ford. there could not have been a better choice for a hymn nor a better vocal interpreter of it. it's magnificent.
@sundance9546 Coloratura is a specific technique in singing involved in singing rapid passages of florid notes, turns and runs. It is also a fach of soprano, dedicated to higher-tessitura soprani who engage often in said acts of coloraturic display. There are such things as coloratura mezzo-soprani, as much as there are lyric soprani and dramatic tenori.
the focus was meant to be on the orchestra i believe, she did a splendid job however u can tell that the key she sings it in aint her natural range esp near the end. the parts she pushes are in the loud section of her falsetto
@InformedListener Actually, after listening to her "Ave Maria" by Caccini, I'm pretty sure she's more of a contralto than a mezzo...but never really gets to sing in that range. This would also explain the differences in her registers and how they sound more like a man's.
Forever sounded more like a couple of years... I think she would be helped a lot if she used better diction.. The orchestra did a great job, though. :)
Rest in Peace President Ford.
she's fantastic. such a rich, resonant, even tone. her vibrato is perfect. warmth is the best adjective to describe her voice.
What a gorgeous voice and she sings the Lord's Prayer so wonderfully. She was the perfect edition to this funeral program.
What a beautiful voice. Great rendition for such a solemn moment.
Miss Graves is a Great Lady and Diva!
simply amazing.
beautiful.
Exquisite!
Gorgeous voice.

Her voice is enveloping!

It took place at Washington National Cathedral as well. Not the National Shrine. I have the video on my profile.

What's the different b/w a coloratura soprano and a mezzo-soprano?? Which one is better, higher, etc?

I love her voice, but this song (The Lords prayer)is best sung by Mario Lanza.
not joan sutherland, but she still has a nice voice.
Apples and oranges....smh
Not Joan Sutherland?? The Lord's Prayer was NOT meant for Joan's voice whatsoever!!! @@pianoman2892
dont forget that denyce graves had some very serious problems with her vocal chords a few years ago.
Forever sounded more like a couple of years...

Just be quiet! Always some couch critic. She sounds beautiful!
