Nice to see you work your magic withsteel, fire and wood. Now let's see more of you.
Jian refers to a sword with an edge on both sides of the blade; a dao is for single edged blades. For a straight translation without context jian=sword and dao=knife but we see that a lot in history; for example, messer in German means knife, but we also see single edged swords with the same title. The way to distinguish sub classes of dao/jian/messer is by what leads the word(yanmaDAO, liuyeDAO, kriegsMESSER).
Compared to some of the more complex pieces you and Alec have produced, I love the simplicity of that sword. It's gorgeous, just the right amount of different things going on, absolutely amazing will, and happy birthday. I just wish I had the money to buy that kinda thing.

Unless I'm mistaken, neither Alec nor Will are trained swordsmen. Which is why this sword is a really spectacular piece, because it was very responsive in Will's hands as he was slicing bottles apart. It's a beautiful example of the type. And frankly, I'm a little surprised you're selling it, given that it was your first complete sword project, plus it's a wonderful "save" out of the failed hook sword project. It really belongs in your private collection.
It is good to see you making your handle from a single piece. I see a lot of these other forgers using the two piece handle. So they have to glue it together. The one single piece handle looks so much better with out the seam line. If you are not covering it, plus it takes less time and you do not have to use glue.

This a really cool episode. I am very success-dependent in my projects and I can feel all the pain in this video. Huge thanks to Will for not stopping and turning a fail into a victory.
If you plan to revisit hook swords or really any blade with that much curve use half round files on the inside bevel. Sure it takes longer to do but mistakes with a belt grinder are instant, you can catch the mistakes with files before they ruin the project and be able to fix them. File the inside bevels first then do the rest with the belt grinder to match. Then if you are making long thin blades get yourself an 8 foot 2x12, cut it in half and have a woodshop run them through a planer to make them perfectly flat. When you take the blade out of the quench immediately sandwich it between the 2 flat boards and clamped to sit overnight. Next morning the blade should be perfectly straight and ready for tempering... tempered while sandwiched between 2 straight pieces of steel and left clamped until cooled to room temp. You will have a straight blade ready for finish work. After quenching as you well know you have a brief amount of time to straighten any bends, that's what the boards do and since they are not great conductors of heat the blade will cool to room temp slower and lock in that straightness. As for tempering sandwiched between 2 straight pieces of steel it wont get a warp to begin with and let cool to room temp while sandwiched will prevent warping when removing it. Also last bit of advice, when cutting water bottles with a single hand sword put your off hand on your chest like you are doing the Pledge of allegiance with the wrong hand.. unless you are left handed ofcourse. Or put the offhand behind your back tucked in the center above your butt. You may not realize it but not doing so can get fingers cut off if you are not well trained in using a sword.
Will made a beautiful job of the Jian, watching them cut with it showed the balance and design off really well. I have been training with a Jian for about ten years, it is said in China the Jian is a gentleman's weapon and to learn it thoroughly takes ten thousand hours. I still have a bit to learn.
