ABOUT THE SOUND OF MUSIC
Produced and directed by Robert Wise, and starring Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer, with Richard Haydn and Eleanor Parker. The film is an adaptation of the 1959 Broadway musical of the same name, composed by Richard Rodgers with lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II. The film's screenplay was written by Ernest Lehman, adapted from the stage musical's book by Lindsay and Crouse. Based on the memoir The Story of the Trapp Family Singers by Maria von Trapp, the film is about a young Austrian woman studying to become a nun in Salzburg in 1938 who is sent to the villa of a retired naval officer and widower to be governess to his seven children. After bringing and teaching love and music into the lives of the family through kindness and patience, she marries the officer and together with the children they find a way to survive the loss of their homeland through courage and faith.
The film was released on March 2, 1965 in the United States, initially as a limited roadshow theatrical release. Although critical response to the film was widely mixed, the film was a major commercial success, becoming the number one box office movie after four weeks, and the highest-grossing film of 1965. By November 1966, The Sound of Music had become the highest-grossing film of all-time-surpassing Gone with the Wind-and held that distinction for five years. The film was just as popular throughout the world, breaking previous box-office records in twenty-nine countries. Following an initial theatrical release that lasted four and a half years, and two successful re-releases, the film sold 283 million admissions worldwide and earned a total worldwide gross of $286,000,000.
The Sound of Music received five Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director. The film also received two Golden Globe Awards, for Best Motion Picture and Best Actress, the Directors Guild of America Award for Outstanding Directorial Achievement, and the Writers Guild of America Award for Best Written American Musical. In 1998, the American Film Institute (AFI) listed The Sound of Music as the fifty-fifth greatest American movie of all time, and the fourth greatest movie musical. In 2001, the United States Library of Congress selected the film for preservation in the National Film Registry, finding it "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant".
ABOUT RODGERS & HAMMERSTEIN
After long and highly distinguished careers with other collaborators, Richard Rodgers (Composer, 1902-1979) and Oscar Hammerstein II (Librettist/Lyricist, 1895-1960) joined forces in 1943 to create the most successful partnership in American musical theater. Prior to joining forces, Rodgers collaborated with lyricist Lorenz Hart on musical comedies that epitomized wit and sophistication (Pal Joey, On Your Toes, Babes In Arms and more), while Hammerstein brought new life to operetta and created the classic Show Boat with Jerome Kern. Oklahoma!, the first Rodgers & Hammerstein musical, introduced an integrated form that became known as “the musical play.” Their shows that followed included Carousel, South Pacific, The King and I, and The Sound of Music. Collectively, the Rodgers & Hammerstein musicals have earned Tony, Oscar, Grammy, Emmy, Pulitzer, and Olivier Awards. The Rodgers & Hammerstein Organization is a Concord Company, www.concord.com.

My dad used to sing this to me every night when I was a child. Just hearing or reading the word "edelweiss" brings back so many memories. I'm tearing up listening to this
+holiboys I am the complete polar opposite. I sang this in choir about 30 years ago.... Still haven't been able to get the damn words outta my head!
+holiboys Dude, my mom sang this to me all the time... she didn't know any actual lullabies but she remembered this from her childhood. It used to make me feel so safe and calm.
im singing this to my little girl everytime putting her to sleep. it never fails!
Your dad sounds lovely...lucky you! :)
Edelweiss is also my father's favourite song from the movie.
Hey world, that’s my Dad dubbing the singing for Christopher Plummer! His name was Bill Lee and he also sang Younger Than Springtime for John Kerr in South Pacific. So proud of him!! ❤️❤️❤️
Wow, that’s amazing! What an iconic voice, what I always hear in my head when I think of this song, truly beautiful! Sending love to your family in these times
Thank you so much! I’m still so proud of my Dad and the amazing job he did
Your father had a beautiful singing voice and brought joy to so many. You are rightly proud of him.
He also sang for John Kerr, Lt. Cable in the movie version of South Pacific. He ROCKED Younger Than Springtime and his other songs were You’ve Got to Be Taught and My Girl Back Home
Good job your dad did. Watching the flick now, I think they dubbed EVERYBODY except JULIE and those NUNS! When the kids sing, it sounds like a generic chorus, instead of little children! Am I right, or did they just sweeten some of the folks? I admit I was pissed about the weest girls dissing of the tv version of 'TSOM', so like to take digs at the old favorite! ( The tv special was doing THE STAGE PLAY, not the film!)
Was anybody else undubbed or unsweetened, even CHARMAINE CARR? Do you know?
I know that was the thing back then, to dub!
Takes me back to when I was 15 years old. My boyfriend and I were running in the rain, his eyeglasses fell off and I stepped on it. We have been married for 42 years ❤

I just heard that Christopher Plummer passed away - this was the first song to come to mind. Bless you Christopher Plummer. ❤️
I thought about this song as well when I heard the news, It's the type of song you can't forget.
Me too! This song was my first thought when i heard the news, specifically the part when Liesl joins and they sing together, because she passed away a few years ago, so...
Now it hits different, god bless them (and Louisa too) ❤️
As me
Me and my sister spent every Christmas Eve watching "Sound of Music" in 80's --- this song reminds me of a Christmas carol --- RIP, Mr. Plummer

My grandma used the melody of this song and came up with different lyrics using my name as a lullaby to help me fall asleep when I was a newborn. Still remains my favorite lullaby to this day. This brought me to tears hearing it, as it reminds me of my grandma and she’s getting older and more forgetful.
What Beautiful memories you have. Such a Blessing.
My grandmother was 69 WHEN I was Born my dad IS 71...
that's so sweet. u have an amazing grandma
What a beautiful memories
🤗
I just read an article that Christopher Plummer tried to pass my Dad’s singing for him as “most of it”. I’m here to set the record straight, every single note of Eidelweiss was dubbed by my fantastic Dad, Bill Lee ❤️❤️❤️
Tf?
for real??
Sorry but Christopher’s voice would’ve been better if you listen to the original recording. Sounds more natural
@@k.robinson6561 not the point bruv
Sorry your dad wasnt given credit. Hollywood is really shitty about that sort of thing (among many other things).
I just realised - if Liesl was 16 here, and Gretl is 5, then their mother must have died when Liesl was 11... so she would have definitely remembered her father singing and being happy/nice to his children. It must have been horrible for her to suddenly have things change to the way they were at the beginning of the film. :( I just noticed that because of how happy Liesl seems at 1:12 to have her father back!
Oh
pentatroyephan I thought of that too!
pentatroyephan yes! And Friedrich would've been 9, Louisa 8, Kurt 6, Brigitta 5, and Marta would've been 2! It makes perfect sense now!

Eleanor Parker’s performance as the The Baroness is underrated. She’s very subtle, and makes what could have been a pantomime ‘wicked stepmother’ a surprisingly nuanced and interesting character.
It’s her reactions here that tell us that Maria is in love with the Captain, rather than anything Julie Andrews herself does.
Very clever.
Agreed, it was great decision to have us come to the realization before Maria. It exemplifies Maria's inner thoughts of not being competent enough, and feeling she is in a lower class than him. It makes everyone wonder why he would be seeing her instead of the Baroness.
The Baroness was really well written. Instead of being the wicked stepmom, as you mentioned, its more of a tragic but inevitable story of her progressively slipping from his sight. Much more emotionally captivating, and gives us a bittersweet feeling when things start to wrap up.
@@ty_hens I agree, I always felt very sympathetic towards the baroness, but she was very gracious and (in the end) magnanimous when it came to accepting defeat. At the same time there was never anything malicious about Maria, she was never stealing him away. So well written
well said. she's a kind and understanding person at heart.
I always loved her character precisely for what you described. Lol
Something I’d love to see one day would be a serious, historically accurate to the letter, biopic of the Von Trapps.
The Sound of Music is a stone cold classic but is of course a musical fantasy inspired by their story.
It would be fascinating to see a true depiction, much wider in scope, detailing Maria and Georg’s marriage, their own children, Father Franz Wasner’s role in the formation of the ‘Trapp Family Choir’, their experience under Nazi annexation which included Captain Von Trapp meeting Hitler and being ‘requested’ to perform at his birthday, their move to America, the death of Georg, the use of their home as a 27-room ski lodge, the writing of Maria’s autobiography and culminating in the making of the Sound of Music movie.
I love pop music, rock music, metal music, everything, but nothing beats the beauty of music like this honestly.

I know Christopher hated this movie, but he was still excellent in it. Hope he’s at peace, and bless him forever.
Why did he hate it??
Whyd he hate it
@@GE-lh8eq For one he hated working with Children. When he was young he had more of an ego and felt children stole the show and people would forget his presence. Also he was not usually accustomed to acting in musicals and family movies. He also didn’t care for the character of Captain Von Trapp. Saying once “he was a boring character.”
In his personal memoir he confessed that he really loved the movie after all! And he also said he felt pride to be a part of it!!
so upset about his death I really just can't believe this
My mom used to hum this to get me to sleep when I was an infant. To this day, almost 32 years later I can’t help but feel safe and sleepy whenever I hear it. I guess that’s how I felt way back then and it’s just one of those things where you respond out of habit.
I played this for my Nana in her final days and recorded my singing for her funeral service. She loved musicals and the song will be our forever connection. ❤

One of my Dad's favorite songs -- miss him so much, lost him when I was 30 & he was 60 back in 1987; now I'm 66 and can't believe how young he was when he died -- listening to this songs brings him back to me. Love you Daddy!
The song is really about Maria. She is Edelweiss - the sweet simple flower of the mountains that he loves - but he doesn't know it yet, nor does she. The Baroness sees trouble coming though. Love the cut to Maria right on the words "you look happy to meet me". Brilliant film-making.
+Abradacamera Its a tribute to Austria during the period it was annexed by Nazi Germany. He felt he would never see the Austrian alps again after they fled.
@K Church That's the second time he sings it at the theatre
K Church that was when he was leaving Austria, to escape the Nazis, not in the scene perfect described between Maria and Captain Von Trapp
In the clip.
It may also be to Agathe von Trapp, his late wife... especially when Liesl joins in.

REST IN PEACE CHRISTOPHER PLUMMER FROM THE SOUND OF MUSIC THE BEST MOVIE OF ALL TIME.....MY FAVORITE MOVIE UNTIL NOW AND FOREVER....
Is anyone here after Christopher Plummers death? I am crying right now. His role in the Sound of music was iconic, and even if he had so many other acting roles, one of which he even won an Oscar for, I'm sure we can all agree that he will be remembered as our Captain Von Trapp. May his soul rest in eternal peace.
I thi k we are all here to appreciate this great actor
@Switzer Tim I agree, Christopher Plummer is a great actor and he has a great singing voice. The only other movies I have seen him on were "The Return Of The Pink Panther", "National Treasure", and "Up."
@@afriendofbean Except it's not him singing. His voice was dubbed.
@@mattiasdanieldamsgaardwood1315 Yes, I'm hearing that from someone else that he wasn't really singing here. So I would guess that would mean that he's not much of a singer which is unknown as to why he auditioned to be in this film which is a musical since I thought people who love to sing audition for musicals. On the other hand, I would guess that actor Rick Moranis is not much of a singer too but, he auditioned for the movie "Little Shop Of Horrors" which is a musical. (All the other movies I have seen Rick Moranis on, he didn't sing).
Meh. I thought he was better as Arngeir in "Skyrim."

The world was blessed because we had the joy of his presence among us for so long. We are a better people because of him...
this is a beautiful song. I don't know if its the way Christopher Plummer sings it or the lyrics but there is something very warm and soothing about this song. All of the songs in this movie are just extraordinary.
CeltycSparrow Christopher Plummer didn't sing it. Sounds like him, though.
Viewers also had no idea that it's wasn't Plummer's voice on the song. The plan was to have him sing, but despite lessons he took before filming, his singing voice proved far from film quality (especially when juxtaposed with Julie Andrews) and a professional singer named Bill Lee was brought in to overdub his singing parts. Plummer explains in his autobiography that he was terrified when they brought him into a studio to record the song, and that Julie Andrews held his had to try and settle him. Plummer learned that singing is very different than acting.
+Zoltan Balint oh I never knew that.
rw: in fact also its my favorite too through the whole movie,it even makes me sing ,to tell the truth its calm soothing and has a gentle feeling to it 3-).
CeltycSparrow Actually Bill Lee is the voice you hear. His voice was dubbed over Christopher Plummers .
The first time, and only time, I saw my father shed a tear at the movies... This song touched him...
chuck weigel It's very moving indeed.
Dear Chuck, ICan perfectly understand it : when I heard this song for the frst time sung by th Captain Von Trapp at the festival I felt myself being Austrian, which is completely strange, as my nation fought for its emancipation from the austrian rule. U Maybe the fact I have been living abroad for more than ten years has caused I first time felt more
the similities instead of differences.
Lubo... well said!
Did he serve in WW11?
Its funny, no austrian knows this song. Its pure american musicalkitsch.
In my place edelweis flowers grow on cold n high places, when me n my late husband was still dating we would love hiking n trekking to mountains to where these flower grow..they come in 2 colors, white n purple here....this song reminds me of my late husband who passed away 9 years ago in young age. O perfeito Capitão Von Trapp! Vamos sentir saudades! 💔
He was an absolute legend.
Why aren’t movies (even when they’re based off of musicals) like this aren’t being made anymore? They’re simple, non-violent and very easy to keep up with. If I may point to a part of script where the Baroness says to the Captain, “Hello; You’re far away, where are you?” I believe the Captains response is the answer to my question, “In a world that’s disappearing, I’m afraid.” We just don’t have the same caliber of actors and actresses we once did.
What about all that Nazi stuff at the end
It is all graphic effects and shock scenes nowadays. Shock value > profound dialogues is today's zeitgeist.

Every time I listen to this song it makes me forget all the bad things in the world and makes me hope for world peace. I forget about all the violent crimes and tragedies. I hope one day everyone can live in peace and not in fear 😔
Same here, Well said 👏
You should think about your home land getting a blessing.
Rest in peace Christopher Plummer. I just loved this movie
I am going to sing this to my newborn when it's born as I rock it to sleep. My favorite movie of all time.
💗💗💗
Apparently during filming, Charmian Carr had a crush on Christopher Plummer and the boy who plays Freiderich had a crush on Charmian :)) 1:12 made me smile lol
Bee M that makes me happy😂💜
Bee M omg I read that too 😂 so adorable!
Apparently Christopher Plummer also had a flirtation with Charmian Carr as well.
Bee M Aw!
I've never been able to watch this scene the same way once I found out Christopher and Charmian were attracted to each other during filming haha. Interestingly enough, Christopher Plummer's wife is actually younger than Charmian Carr was, so age clearly wasn't an issue for him lol.
Good job Christopher Plummer keep up the good work enjoy your singing you should be proud way to go take care. Joe
God I love Christopher!!!!💘💘💘 You Just can’t take your eyes off of him!!! So sad he’s gone😭💔💔
