Number of cricket matches in Manjerekar days was relatively very less since cricket funding & infrastructure was much lesser. Now you have more matches, backup support, competition & cricket infrastructure too. More importantly there is more PR for almost every successful cricketer & income. Kohli had the world-class skills for ODIs & was also single-handedly elevated as captain for all formats by Ravi Shastri who was biased helping Kohli. That was reason Ravi Shastri was kicked out by BCCI & Kohli was given a break for almost a year to ensure he reworks on his skills.
