He’s looking like he’s finishing a lot stronger because he’s a higher caliber athlete than the field and those athletes are specialists in the 100m freestyle whereas Michael isn’t. Even though Michael feels like he’s swimming 200 pace because he’s not used to the 100m freestyle he will win the race because he’s a higher caliber athlete than the field who are specialists in the event. However, because they’re specialists in the 100m freestyle, it’s going to look like Phelps has a strong second 50, when in reality it’s just that Phelps isn’t used to racing the 100m freestyle, whereas the lower caliber athletes that are specialists are ahead in the first 50m because they know how to race the 100m like how they’re supposed to. Age group times, especially when you’re so young, don’t mean shit. You can be half a foot taller than the kid next to you, but four years later that same kid will beat you by a lot.
