They best get this right and whichever ship design they choose it best have a large VLS system and be able to fire Tomahawk missiles, there is no point being under armed in this day and age.
Tomahawks and SM6 is part of the armament for tier 1 ships the Hobart class and the Hunter class. The 11 multi-purpose ships is to replace the Anzac class as tier 2 mostly focused on ASW with some air defence ESSM and SM2. 32 cell VLS would be fine that would give 64 ESSM in 16 cells and 16 SM2 missiles in the remaining VLS cells. SM6 and tomahawks is not part of the armament for tier 2 ships. More than likely, the Mogami class frigates would be the most likely candidate due to fact the upgunned 32 cell varent will be built in 2027. That uses the MK41 VLS system. The meko A200 class has not been eqwiped with MK41 VLS it has something else. The Meko A210 hasn't been built yet its still only a paper design offering
I am hoping we get the Mogami. From the 3d files and pictures I looked at, she has low observability, not full-blown stealth which means they didn't put all their eggs in one basket and sacrifice other important design factors while addressing a crucial design characteristic required for survival in a modern combat environment. kinda like a 4.5 gen jet such as a Eurofighter typhoon or rafale. The latter of which is purported to have recently scored a training kill against an F22.
They will have to pick the Japanese frigate as the meko isn't compatible with Australian weapon systems without customisation. Theirs no meko class that is equipped with a MK41 VLS cell. It uses something eles. So for an complete offshore design the Japanese frigate is the only one that has scanned aray radar and MK41 VLS system to accommodate ESSM and SM2 SM6 ect these 11 ships is for sea 3000 program for tier 2. Australia is still to build 6 upgunned hunter.class frigate that will have 64 cell VLS..the Japanese frigate will only have 16 cell VLS and will be solely responsible for ASW role. The hunter class will perform both ASW and AWDs role. They originally proposed upgunned to 96 cell vls but can't have a towed away sonar so they will slightly downgrade it to 64 cell VLS to allow the hunter.class to be eqwiped with ASW and still have a multimission bay. A new desined AWDs will be picked to replace the Hobart class sometime in 2030s. Could Possibly be the Navantia flight III 128 cell VLS destroyers. That's still in the design phase The idea of tuer 2 ships is to protect and cover Australia sovereignty and surrounding areas in Oceania. A crew of 96 per ship. As the hunter.class is more blue water vessel with a crew of around 170 per vessel
@@Nathan-yy2xs Tend to disagree with you, the Meko A200 is just an evolution of the ANZAC class, that is already fitted with the SAAB 9LV CMS, the 8 cell for ESSM is a MK41 VLS, could go on, and if you have spoken to sailors still serving, the Spanish ships are not that reliable.
@boredatsea The Anzac class and the new meko A200 are both different hull designs. And theirs no meko A200 that has been fitted with MK41 VLS system. Australia has spent millions dollars on Osborne naval shipyard for our Hobart and Hunter class and I cannot understand why we should end up another different Hull design like the meko class, that Anzac class is dead end, if we keep using our Hobart hull design we have and add with different modular design it will be cheaper for Australian boat builder to build as well the maintenance for spare parts, to have third design will be far more expensive in the long run. Hobart class was the Australian navy most powerful ship in history and looking at Japanese and Korean destroyers is impressive could have a future for Australian new evolution design based on enlargement Hobart class and that's goes the same for our frigates Hunter class, I do not believe the meko/german class which looks far too small for Australian navy need and the last thing we need a small Navy ship to carry 16 VLS is a death sentence for our navy.
@sparkiegaz3613 Australia building 6 type 26. From 2032. The 11 ships of smaller frigates is for tier 2 and is to replace the current Anzac class frigates
@valenrn8657 it isn't weak. The Mogami class frigates are better than the Meko class. It is faster and has a stronger hull design for one. Has better sensors and a decent low signature detection. It's larger and has a better radar system and fitted with MK41 VLS system for compatibility with American armament that the RAN use
I cannot understand how we could go with the new Meko when we could just upgrade the ones we have if they are to be second tier frigates than our current Meko's /ANZAC frigates fit that bill
Yes . i agree with you 100% . The Meko 200 is not that much different from what we have in the Anzac ships , in my opinion i think they should go with the Meko A-300 , it has about 64 VLS plus 16 land attack missiles and has much better battle survivability . Also i think it has provision for Laser weapon systems and a 127mm main gun.
