Never knew this before. I think James Reyne or his brother. David?, was behind the female band Chantoozies, which had Oliva Newton-John's niece in it. Lucky bastard to get Oliva doing some backup vocals on one of his first singles.
Hammerhead was recorded in LA. American master guitarist Jef Scott played on the record. During the recording, James Reyne and his manager Roger Davies thought there needed to be an Olivia Newton-John type voice as a backing. Roger also managed ONJ. He asked her to sing, and she accepted. Her voice was recorded in one take. James Reyne says she was a delight and so professional to work with. James, some years later, walked the Great Wall of China with ONJ to raise money for her cancer centre in Melbourne. They reminisced about the recording of Hammerhead.
Went to Sting in Bowral, NSW, a couple of years ago - outstanding concert - James and his band were support act - BLOODY FANTASTIC - could have listened to him all night!
I saw James Reyne at the end of last year in concert at the Miami Marketta with his band , here on the Gold Coast. What a night and he still sounds incredible ❤

You two just made my day...James fucking Reyne (pronounced Rain)is one of my favourite vocalists...that may not be his actual middle name lol. His phrasing is next level. I also love to throw this song's trivia at a lot of my mates...they've all heard this song a thousand times but i always like to test whether they can pick the backing vocalist (ONJ). Not one has got it right yet. My suggestion for James is his song "Always the way"...its my favourite.
Thank you for reacting to my request 😊. Yes, that's how you pronounce his last name. I agree, the song is sooo 1980s and I love it!! Interesting, you mentioned he sounded a bit like Jimmy Barnes in the chorus. Yeah, I hear a bit of Barnes in there now, too. There is an official video clip, but to cut the song down to 3 mins, they chopped off a bit of the introduction and most of Olivia Newton-John at the end.
should do a reaction Australian Crawl - Downhearted (live) (best version video is from laneway music channel), so can gauge what he was like as singer and performer... james reyne is in the same league with jimmy barnes in terms of aussie rock legend.... his catalogue of hits and cult classic songs are extensive.... he also nearly became james bond as he was in a tv mini series that became the number one tv hit worldwide....
Ah yes the OG James Reyne hit. Showed us how awesome our accent could be? I still don't know half the words but I belt it out perfectly whenever and wherever it plays 😂
I never had a problem, must be just what you are used to hearing. I have more trouble with Jimmy Barnes. My nephew had him perform at his wedding reception. Gee he was good.
He should b sir James Reyne so underrated in the Aussie music he's me fav from home u guys need to check out White Limbo and There's Always The Way by James Reyns&Australisn crawl he's up there either the likes of Barnsey& Hutchinson
Excellent stuff! Now if you can, for the amusement of all Aussies, listen to 'Things Don't Seem' by Australian Crawl and make a genuine attempt to decipher the lyrics. No cheating.
The video to this is beautifully crafted with the gorgeous James obsessively following the course of his beautiful, independent [ video ] girlfriend slowly going to waste. The lyrics follow the imagery perfectly for carrying the hammerhead's obsessive journey of cause and effect in parallel to her lover's obsessive interest in her breaking down. Description too long, but I must analyse my obsession with it even just for my own self.
James always had a unique relationship with the English language..... But he bedded some of the most beautiful women in the world,so.... We forgive him.
I chose not to give the video version because the song is cut down to 3 minutes long. Rather, I preferred to give Travis and Suzi to listen to the whole song.
You totally, completely and utterly missed the mark on this one. This song is an extraordinary, eloquent and painful description of someone who is addicted to drugs, namely heroin. Hammerhead is the headache that follows the use of the drug. The seductive descriptions are of the drug, like "Some silken slip of evil" which refers to the packaging the drug is supplied in, sexy, yet evil. The line "You've been hanging with the nicest people" is actually a sarcastic reference to those who use drugs as being "nice people" who really aren't. "Let's go to waste" - is a clear indicator about getting wasted or high. "You'll never know what you do to me, Five times a day" another reference to the fact that users need multiple hits in a day. You can't just do it once, you have to use multiple times in a day or risk suffering withdrawal symptoms. "My self destruction you'll over see" is a blatant and heartbreaking realisation that the drug will oversee your destruction, probably one of the most powerful and poignant lines of the whole song. "Take the food from my mouth" - which means they either don't want to eat or can't afford to, after spending all their money on the drugs. "Take my sex" - meaning that drug use can cause an inability or unwillingness to perform, particularly for males. "Take my friends, take my lovers" - drug use takes everything from you, your friends, your lovers and more, when he says "here... take this......" and you have to wonder (even though it is not spoken) what was it that he offered? "Like kissing God" is a clear reference to the euphoria you would feel in the initial moments of taking heroin. This is a song about addiction. One could argue it could be about a toxic relationship, but the blatant imagery presented in the lyrics points directly at a description of a drug addled heroin user. I would highly recommend (but I doubt you will) to go back and view the lyrics of this song with this new knowledge and perhaps view it in a different light, once that is not quite so happy and carefree, but one that tackles a very serious and destructive aspect of the human existance.
An unspoken legend of the Australian music scene. He deserves more recognition than he gets.
I had a spark of pride when you said Australia has taken over the station.
It can only help. my friend.
James has a phenomenal catalogue of songs. From Aussie Crawl to his solo stuff. Great voice and amazing songwriting
Love Aussie Crawl.and James Reyne 🇦🇺 ❤
oliva newton john back up vocals

Should have been a huge hit in the US moody 80s song captures every element of that time best decade in history.
He was the lead singer of a band called Australian Crawl. Great voice.

sweet story
Went to Sting in Bowral, NSW, a couple of years ago - outstanding concert - James and his band were support act - BLOODY FANTASTIC - could have listened to him all night!
Hammer was slang for heroin. It’s about heroin addiction.
The guitar riff …One of the best.
Aussie classic.
It's always good hearing Livvy in this.
Our late beloved angel Olivia Newton John putting the icing on the cake
Bringing my youth back. 😂❤
G'day, Aussie Crawl are great too, especially "Boys Light Up" and "Reckless"
If curious - they had reacted to Reckless a couple of years ago.
For 40 years I thought James was saying... 'Hang my head'
My favorites from his solo career is 'Slave' and 'one more river'...great guitar and bass in both.
I saw James Reyne at the end of last year in concert at the Miami Marketta with his band , here on the Gold Coast. What a night and he still sounds incredible ❤
James still tours here in Oz we go to his shows every time we can. Still sounds great. ❤
So good eh!!! Still brilliant 👌

Five times a day
My self destruction you'll over see
Don't go - don't go away
Just a touch of you
Just a taste
Like kissing God is what we do
Let's go to waste
You'll never know what you do to me
So sublime
You're like the Devil in Heaven
Every - every time
You've been hanging with the nicest people
Hammerhead
Some silken slip of evil
Hammerhead
Take food from my mouth
Take my sex
Take my friends take my lovers
Here take this
You'll never know what you do to me
Maybe I'm wrong
Let's take this journey together
Please come - please come along
Please come - please come along
You've been hanging with the nicest people
Hammerhead
Some silken slip of evil
Hammerhead
Oohh ooooohhhhh
You've been hanging with the nicest people

You should both check out his former band "Australia Crawl" - one of Australia's best every bands with killer hits one after another!!!!
The song is referencing Heroin addiction
You really need to do more James Reyne. He’s a boss!! Great reaction 👏👏👏

It's worth watching the official clip.
You would love Some People by James Reyne.
my fave songs from James Reyne are 'Slave', 'Motors Too Fast' and 'Reckless'.
One of my most favourite albums ever, apart from his second solo album Hard Reyne. Thanks Jane 🥰👌
You're welcome 😊. I'm glad Travis and Suzi loved the song, too.
Your blushing girl.😂😅
Thank you for reacting to my request 😊.

They have previously reacted to "Reckless" 😊
Had women swoon ....lol This is one of the best songs which one can understand the lyrics lol. Don't Be So Restless is another goody...
For 40 years I thought James Reyne was saying "Wang ma der", no idea what that means. lol

Ah yes the OG James Reyne hit. Showed us how awesome our accent could be? I still don't know half the words but I belt it out perfectly whenever and wherever it plays 😂
Absolutely! I reckon all his songs are bangers, but Fall Of Rome, just wow, eh 👌😳
Another good song on the subject “Hammer the hammer” by the go betweens .
You guys should check out another James Reyne song called "Heaven on a Stick". Brilliant Aussie summer song, but you may not get some of the lyrics.
Great voice but no one could ever understand a word he sang.
I never had a problem, must be just what you are used to hearing. I have more trouble with Jimmy Barnes.
My nephew had him perform at his wedding reception. Gee he was good.
Exactly
😂
Lol so true
NOPE no problem here

"some people" James Reyne.
I thought he said 'with the 97 people, hound my head'! I once walked five miles in the dark, to check if my boyfriend was cheating! 🥴
Excellent stuff! Now if you can, for the amusement of all Aussies, listen to 'Things Don't Seem' by Australian Crawl and make a genuine attempt to decipher the lyrics. No cheating.

His name should NEVER be mentioned in the same sentence as Jimmy Barnes!
