I see a rack of several gemshorns, recorders made of cow horn. I started making them in the 70s for a couple years, then again in the 90s for a couple years. I made approximately 60 or 70 gemshorns of cowhorn and also some of exotic horns like gazelle, antelope and topi. I never met anyone else in my travels who knew how to make them, and only knew of one or two makers overseas, but never had a chance to see any of their offerings. Unfortunately I'm getting too old now to embark upon another batch, and I'm saddened that I never had the opportunity to be able to teach others how to create these beautiful 'organic' instruments that are certainly dying out now. I presently only have three of the ones which I built, from the batch I made in the 90s in NYC. As they were rather expensive, I never found a lot of people who were interested in buying them. In my first batch, I actually traded many to local music shops in exchange for other instruments that I wanted but likewise couldn't afford, as I was in my teens then... Soon the term 'gemshorn' will only denote the name of a stop in certain church organs!
Wunderschön!
What a lovely sound. :)
