"Discourse: The ARG" ...You know, I didn't anticipate it turning out like that when I got into this, but it kind of ends up being like that sometimes huh? In retrospect maybe that should have been inevitable given the main themes of morality and lots of people being encouraged to judge people from all different walks of life in such overly simple, binary terms as "innocent/guilty" or forgiven/not forgiven".
The part around 2:35 to 2:40 where Kotoko says "I want to be drowning in the knowledge that I am right.", and it shows Haruka floating underneath the water, was pretty cool. : D
I love the transitions and the specific phrases for each transition. Time to overanalyze it!! Starting with a reminder as to what MILGRAM really is. Undercover > "I wonder. Can you really say INNOCENT?" > Harrow "Let's end this!" Because Kotoko jumped to conclusions very quickly about those initially guilty, basically saying "no" to that question. Harrow "I want to be drowning in the knowledge that I am right" > Weakness "Tell me, why are you drifting away from me. Tell me, why do you say it's my fault?" Because after the second trial, Haruka was all about saying "I wasn't wrong, I wasn't wrong." This also has to do with him wanting to be pitied, to be told "it's NOT your fault". Both want to be acknowledged as 'correct', to be praised for their actions, but Kotoko wants that verdict in order to execute her duties, while Haruka just wants to be loved again by that person. Weakness-> "It's broken right away. The things that aren't here, and the unneeded things. Is it still living somewhere?" > TIHTBILWY "Do you really think you know what love is? [...] The things that I only want to say to you, and the things that I want from you: is love." I think this is a little trickier? I expected Yuno because she fits that theme of getting rid of what's unneeded. The first part relates to the mentioned 'break-up ritual' she and her partner have. I think the rest has to do with Mahiru needing nothing but the ability to love someone, yet her partner is suffering because of her incessant love and need to share everything with them. Everything else-- a social life outside of her love (apart from her hairdresser), hobbies that she doesn't share with her love, etc, are unneeded and discarded. This doesn't bode well with her partner, who still wanted things 'living' apart from their relationship. From reading some replies and comments-- they also both want to be loved and have their love for others accepted. also, this trio seems to match with the theme of being 'loved'/'approval' for their actions. Almost like 3 different love languages: seeking validation to keep going, being loved despite weaknesses (hah), and having your love accepted. This is How to Be in Love With You > "Ring ring, I’m calling you in the middle of the night" > Umbilical "I feel a little weird. [...] I can't get you out of my head." This is also difficult. I think Yuno must've had similar situations to Mahiru's late lover: midnight calls, times when she doesn't like the person she's being a callgirl for, but otherwise I can't think of much. Umbilical "I messed up. I found out" > Half "The curse of reuniting with you puts a dagger in my heart" (I really love how Umbilical slows down before transitioning) Ok this is really obvious. This can go for both Kazui and his wife. Kazui always says how he regrets being honest and should've kept lying, "messing up", and "found out" just how badly he messed up likely right after his wife probably died. Funnily enough, Yuno also answered a question and said that Kazui would be the prisoner most like herself. I saw somewhere that they are both liars, which is genius and something we only found out after trial 2. Yuno has a 'bubbly personality' and puts on facades for her dates, all which 'warm her up'. She has some fun with her lies, makes money, and she knows she's loved by her family and friends, so she doesn't have many problems with it. Kazui, meanwhile lives alongside his lies and said his family must be embarrassed by him. Yuno is 'normal' until she lies, and Kazui is 'normal' because of his lies. Half "Please tell me what I should do, feelings shrouded in lies will float away and disappear" > Throw Down ""NO" in my dream. I am making you cry again, I am being blamed." In a way, Kazui and Shidou are opposites but also the same?? Kazui wasn't sure what to do, teetering on a fence before eventually regretting the 'right' decision, but still being kinda meh towards being forgiven or not. Shidou was 100% certain in his endeavors of (presumably) killing off patients and maybe organ harvesting, only to want to call it off after losing his family forever, and heading into MILGRAM like "make me guilty". Both can relate to the "feelings shrouded in lies", though one is lying to his wife and the other is lying to patients for his wife and family. I find it interesting too that Kazui uses lying as almost a lifestyle while Shidou lied to protect/ruin the lives of others. this trio seems to have to do with 'lies'. Lying for strangers which ended up with an unwanted life, lying to keep living, lying so others may die for another to live Throw Down > "Please don’t forgive me. That’s why I want this to end. “Throw down”" > Bring It On "Found one...! Countdown till I make you say sorry." (I love the snapping while it transitions) Shidou very obviously wants (wanted) to be unforgiven, to end everything as karma for all the killing he's done. Meanwhile, Futa sounds like he's judging him, finding another 'sinner' to bring down. Bring It On > "It’s going great, We’re gonna punish you until you cry. If you get off now, you're a traitor. Now let’s be reasonable. x4" > Magic "This happy pinky promise hurts to break." THIS IS SO GOOD. The almost condescending lines from Futa (especially saying "Now, let's be reasonable.") while Amane is literally in a cult that punishes her if she ever disagrees, disguising it as "love". The only difference is that the cult is more manipulative. Futa doesn't want to redeem the people he punishes, he just wants to deliver justice and be seen as a good guy. Meanwhile, the cult still wants to lure Amane in-- and she also wants to be accepted by them. Thus, "let's be reasonable." even if WE know the cult isn't reasonable at all. Magic > "But it’s not scary at all, because it’s love. I can really think it’s great. See, isn’t it a great thing?" > MeMe "If I could laugh. If I could go back. I’d play dead even though I’m alive right?" (I like how it speeds up a little, almost as though growing more desperate) I think these words, in some way, are from Mikoto's alter who tries to 'protect' Mikoto. In the same way Mikoto's alter is likely the violent one, he tries to convince US by acting like "it isn't scary that I'm making myself a criminal, because I'm doing this out of the love and will to protect 'me'." At the same time, I think the lines Mikoto says could apply to Amane. She doesn't know the cult is brainwashing her-- but if she were to realize how harmful it is, she wouldn't be as happy as she currently seems while in the cult. (Also, I find it hilarious that Amane is sandwiched between arguably the most expressively violent songs in this-- other than Kotoko, of course. Really shows how messed up her situation is objectively) now this trio is a little bit more difficult?? i want to say its 'righteousness'. Being 'right' because you're backed by a bunch of people, being 'right' because you've a cult backing you, and being 'right' because you don't know what happened/are protecting 'yourself'. Alternatively, it could be 'justifications' (which is kinda the same thing) MeMe > "The truth will come to reveal itself. I wonʼt forgive you if this is happening to me even though Iʼm right." > After Pain "If I were gone." I LOVE that it hard cuts to Mu's song after "Even though I'm right." Because even if After Pain painted her as strictly a victim, we as the audience now know how that isn't the case, and how quickly Mu switched into a mindset similar to Haruka: "I'm right, the truth will reveal itself." This line also kind of relates back to Mu saying that she hopes we won't doubt our forgiveness for her and to not look for the scars "after" pain. The truth that was revealed to us, though, was she also took part in bullying in the past, but she thought the truth was that she was right all along, that she was to be forgiven and pitied. Finally, "I found out how much I’m not needed" is such a chilling line to end off of. In a way, I think it sort of links that to Es? Es is simply a vessel for us, the audience, to make our judgments. It could have been anybody-- it just happened to be Es. At the same time that they are essential for us to actually execute our judgements, Es is also easily replaceable (supposedly), because their attitude is mostly based off of US, the audience. While I do think the writers might subvert this expectation (as Es DOES have their own personality-- just not in terms of judgements), the 'Guard' could technically be anyone with no backstory (yet), no memories (yet): a completely blank slate for us to dump our opinions on to express to the prisoners.

Haruka to Mahiru makes more sense if you pay attention to the " I guess this feeling is happiness but I can't help but feel like something is missing", she's wonder if the happiness is still "living somewhere"

I see themes with the transitions, like the first one with ES and Kotoko Both of them are people who are representations of justice. ES who is judging everyone here, Kotoko acting on whatever ES decides a vigalante who doesn't wait to punish the supposed guilty which she believes is right. Haruka and Mahiru wanting love. Haruka wanting the pity type of parental love and Mahiru wanting to share her overwhelming feelings. Yuno and Kazui are people who had masks on. The Yuno we see in S1 is the fake personality she uses for in the outside but we see the real Yuno later on, who has much more going on. Kazui is seen wearing a mask in his MV. Shidou always searching for something, being mysterious and unhappy, who himself thinks he is the bad guy while Futa another justice vigalante but who wants to be known as the good guy. Shidou and Futa essentially being oppposites. Amane, Mikoto and Mu the manipulative/manipulated trio. Amane the manipulated by the cult. Mikoto being manipulated by himself. Mu manipulating the whole world. This might be complete nonsense but or the obvious facts but I wanted to point out how masterful everything is made. Milgram is amazing and I can't comprehend how much effort is behind each character. Also the transitions in the remix are so cool. Congrats for 3 years! I'm so excited for the future story.
I'd like to correct the last one. I believe mikoto and muu don't share manipulative behavior, but they both seem to struggle with finding themselves and their self steem. mikoto is always seen as being a bit too miserable when he's at his job and when he arrives home, and muu is just... constantly miserable in her mv, except for when she's being given attention and praise. plus the DID and the implications of BPD w muu,, i think the connection was supposed to be between kazui and shidou, too, as their partners were the victim and there's a theme of lying with them both, and fuuta was supposed to be matching with amane in the sheep/cult themes. fuuta bashes anyone who breaks the rules, and amane is the one who broke the rule.

I'm just not over how TeddyLoid was able to cleanly transition in & out of Magic with 2 of the heaviest instrumentals of the season. I'm not shocked they are able to because it's TeddyLoid but goddamn those were clean.
One thing I'm wondering is- On the Side TVs, each prisoner either appears on the left or the right TV. I thought it just went back and forth without a pattern, but when it gets to Yuno and Kazui, both of them appear on the TV on the right. In the end, the prisoners appear as such: RIGHT TV: Es, Haruka, Yuno, Kazui, Fuuta, Mikoto LEFT TV: Kotoko, Mahiru, Shidou, Amane, Mu Am I just overthinking things, or is there maybe some sorta pattern here? I think it's odd for Yuno and Kazui to be on the same side instead of continuing to switch back and forth... (On Kazui, too, the other TV's static changes in pattern from covering the whole TV to being more sparse for some reason...)
I have two guesses (neither of them fully fit) but thinking maybe deaths caused indirectly vs directly, or the total of forgiven to not forgiven votes) Es's presence confused the whole set up and it isn't a perfect guess even if they weren't there, but this is all I got.
Maybe premeditated crimes vs spur of the moment crimes? One could argue that Kotoko wasn't looking to kill the person she was investigating and just got caught up in the emotions of it all and accidentally beat the guy a little TOO hard... Kazui kind of doesn't make much sense but it could come to light he was planning on forcing a divorce and got a different result.

I think it’s changed to match the audio dramas a bit more (especially the newer ones like Mu) for the English viewers that don’t listen to them so they get information more accurate to the character rather than being symbolic or whatever

I love the transitions and the specific phrases for each transition. Time to overanalyze it!!
Starting with a reminder as to what MILGRAM really is.
Undercover > "I wonder. Can you really say INNOCENT?" > Harrow "Let's end this!" Because Kotoko jumped to conclusions very quickly about those initially guilty, basically saying "no" to that question.
Harrow "I want to be drowning in the knowledge that I am right" > Weakness "Tell me, why are you drifting away from me. Tell me, why do you say it's my fault?" Because after the second trial, Haruka was all about saying "I wasn't wrong, I wasn't wrong." This also has to do with him wanting to be pitied, to be told "it's NOT your fault". Both want to be acknowledged as 'correct', to be praised for their actions, but Kotoko wants that verdict in order to execute her duties, while Haruka just wants to be loved again by that person.
Weakness-> "It's broken right away. The things that aren't here, and the unneeded things. Is it still living somewhere?" > TIHTBILWY "Do you really think you know what love is? [...] The things that I only want to say to you, and the things that I want from you: is love." I think this is a little trickier? I expected Yuno because she fits that theme of getting rid of what's unneeded. The first part relates to the mentioned 'break-up ritual' she and her partner have. I think the rest has to do with Mahiru needing nothing but the ability to love someone, yet her partner is suffering because of her incessant love and need to share everything with them. Everything else-- a social life outside of her love (apart from her hairdresser), hobbies that she doesn't share with her love, etc, are unneeded and discarded. This doesn't bode well with her partner, who still wanted things 'living' apart from their relationship. From reading some replies and comments-- they also both want to be loved and have their love for others accepted.
also, this trio seems to match with the theme of being 'loved'/'approval' for their actions. Almost like 3 different love languages: seeking validation to keep going, being loved despite weaknesses (hah), and having your love accepted.
This is How to Be in Love With You > "Ring ring, I’m calling you in the middle of the night" > Umbilical "I feel a little weird. [...] I can't get you out of my head." This is also difficult. I think Yuno must've had similar situations to Mahiru's late lover: midnight calls, times when she doesn't like the person she's being a callgirl for, but otherwise I can't think of much.
Umbilical "I messed up. I found out" > Half "The curse of reuniting with you puts a dagger in my heart" (I really love how Umbilical slows down before transitioning) Ok this is really obvious. This can go for both Kazui and his wife. Kazui always says how he regrets being honest and should've kept lying, "messing up", and "found out" just how badly he messed up likely right after his wife probably died. Funnily enough, Yuno also answered a question and said that Kazui would be the prisoner most like herself. I saw somewhere that they are both liars, which is genius and something we only found out after trial 2. Yuno has a 'bubbly personality' and puts on facades for her dates, all which 'warm her up'. She has some fun with her lies, makes money, and she knows she's loved by her family and friends, so she doesn't have many problems with it. Kazui, meanwhile lives alongside his lies and said his family must be embarrassed by him. Yuno is 'normal' until she lies, and Kazui is 'normal' because of his lies.
Half "Please tell me what I should do, feelings shrouded in lies will float away and disappear" > Throw Down ""NO" in my dream. I am making you cry again, I am being blamed." In a way, Kazui and Shidou are opposites but also the same?? Kazui wasn't sure what to do, teetering on a fence before eventually regretting the 'right' decision, but still being kinda meh towards being forgiven or not. Shidou was 100% certain in his endeavors of (presumably) killing off patients and maybe organ harvesting, only to want to call it off after losing his family forever, and heading into MILGRAM like "make me guilty". Both can relate to the "feelings shrouded in lies", though one is lying to his wife and the other is lying to patients for his wife and family. I find it interesting too that Kazui uses lying as almost a lifestyle while Shidou lied to protect/ruin the lives of others.
this trio seems to have to do with 'lies'. Lying for strangers which ended up with an unwanted life, lying to keep living, lying so others may die for another to live
Throw Down > "Please don’t forgive me. That’s why I want this to end. “Throw down”" > Bring It On "Found one...! Countdown till I make you say sorry." (I love the snapping while it transitions) Shidou very obviously wants (wanted) to be unforgiven, to end everything as karma for all the killing he's done. Meanwhile, Futa sounds like he's judging him, finding another 'sinner' to bring down.
Bring It On > "It’s going great, We’re gonna punish you until you cry. If you get off now, you're a traitor. Now let’s be reasonable. x4" > Magic "This happy pinky promise hurts to break." THIS IS SO GOOD. The almost condescending lines from Futa (especially saying "Now, let's be reasonable.") while Amane is literally in a cult that punishes her if she ever disagrees, disguising it as "love". The only difference is that the cult is more manipulative. Futa doesn't want to redeem the people he punishes, he just wants to deliver justice and be seen as a good guy. Meanwhile, the cult still wants to lure Amane in-- and she also wants to be accepted by them. Thus, "let's be reasonable." even if WE know the cult isn't reasonable at all.
Magic > "But it’s not scary at all, because it’s love. I can really think it’s great. See, isn’t it a great thing?" > MeMe "If I could laugh. If I could go back. I’d play dead even though I’m alive right?" (I like how it speeds up a little, almost as though growing more desperate) I think these words, in some way, are from Mikoto's alter who tries to 'protect' Mikoto. In the same way Mikoto's alter is likely the violent one, he tries to convince US by acting like "it isn't scary that I'm making myself a criminal, because I'm doing this out of the love and will to protect 'me'." At the same time, I think the lines Mikoto says could apply to Amane. She doesn't know the cult is brainwashing her-- but if she were to realize how harmful it is, she wouldn't be as happy as she currently seems while in the cult.
(Also, I find it hilarious that Amane is sandwiched between arguably the most expressively violent songs in this-- other than Kotoko, of course. Really shows how messed up her situation is objectively)
now this trio is a little bit more difficult?? i want to say its 'righteousness'. Being 'right' because you're backed by a bunch of people, being 'right' because you've a cult backing you, and being 'right' because you don't know what happened/are protecting 'yourself'. Alternatively, it could be 'justifications' (which is kinda the same thing)
MeMe > "The truth will come to reveal itself. I wonʼt forgive you if this is happening to me even though Iʼm right." > After Pain "If I were gone." I LOVE that it hard cuts to Mu's song after "Even though I'm right." Because even if After Pain painted her as strictly a victim, we as the audience now know how that isn't the case, and how quickly Mu switched into a mindset similar to Haruka: "I'm right, the truth will reveal itself." This line also kind of relates back to Mu saying that she hopes we won't doubt our forgiveness for her and to not look for the scars "after" pain. The truth that was revealed to us, though, was she also took part in bullying in the past, but she thought the truth was that she was right all along, that she was to be forgiven and pitied.
Finally, "I found out how much I’m not needed" is such a chilling line to end off of. In a way, I think it sort of links that to Es? Es is simply a vessel for us, the audience, to make our judgments. It could have been anybody-- it just happened to be Es. At the same time that they are essential for us to actually execute our judgements, Es is also easily replaceable (supposedly), because their attitude is mostly based off of US, the audience. While I do think the writers might subvert this expectation (as Es DOES have their own personality-- just not in terms of judgements), the 'Guard' could technically be anyone with no backstory (yet), no memories (yet): a completely blank slate for us to dump our opinions on to express to the prisoners.

I see themes with the transitions, like the first one with ES and Kotoko Both of them are people who are representations of justice. ES who is judging everyone here, Kotoko acting on whatever ES decides a vigalante who doesn't wait to punish the supposed guilty which she believes is right. Haruka and Mahiru wanting love. Haruka wanting the pity type of parental love and Mahiru wanting to share her overwhelming feelings. Yuno and Kazui are people who had masks on. The Yuno we see in S1 is the fake personality she uses for in the outside but we see the real Yuno later on, who has much more going on. Kazui is seen wearing a mask in his MV. Shidou always searching for something, being mysterious and unhappy, who himself thinks he is the bad guy while Futa another justice vigalante but who wants to be known as the good guy. Shidou and Futa essentially being oppposites. Amane, Mikoto and Mu the manipulative/manipulated trio. Amane the manipulated by the cult. Mikoto being manipulated by himself. Mu manipulating the whole world.
This might be complete nonsense but or the obvious facts but I wanted to point out how masterful everything is made. Milgram is amazing and I can't comprehend how much effort is behind each character. Also the transitions in the remix are so cool. Congrats for 3 years! I'm so excited for the future story.

I'd like to correct the last one. I believe mikoto and muu don't share manipulative behavior, but they both seem to struggle with finding themselves and their self steem. mikoto is always seen as being a bit too miserable when he's at his job and when he arrives home, and muu is just... constantly miserable in her mv, except for when she's being given attention and praise. plus the DID and the implications of BPD w muu,,
i think the connection was supposed to be between kazui and shidou, too, as their partners were the victim and there's a theme of lying with them both, and fuuta was supposed to be matching with amane in the sheep/cult themes. fuuta bashes anyone who breaks the rules, and amane is the one who broke the rule.

I'm just not over how TeddyLoid was able to cleanly transition in & out of Magic with 2 of the heaviest instrumentals of the season. I'm not shocked they are able to because it's TeddyLoid but goddamn those were clean.

One thing I'm wondering is- On the Side TVs, each prisoner either appears on the left or the right TV. I thought it just went back and forth without a pattern, but when it gets to Yuno and Kazui, both of them appear on the TV on the right. In the end, the prisoners appear as such:
RIGHT TV: Es, Haruka, Yuno, Kazui, Fuuta, Mikoto
LEFT TV: Kotoko, Mahiru, Shidou, Amane, Mu
Am I just overthinking things, or is there maybe some sorta pattern here? I think it's odd for Yuno and Kazui to be on the same side instead of continuing to switch back and forth... (On Kazui, too, the other TV's static changes in pattern from covering the whole TV to being more sparse for some reason...)
I have two guesses (neither of them fully fit) but thinking maybe deaths caused indirectly vs directly, or the total of forgiven to not forgiven votes)
Es's presence confused the whole set up and it isn't a perfect guess even if they weren't there, but this is all I got.
Maybe premeditated crimes vs spur of the moment crimes? One could argue that Kotoko wasn't looking to kill the person she was investigating and just got caught up in the emotions of it all and accidentally beat the guy a little TOO hard... Kazui kind of doesn't make much sense but it could come to light he was planning on forcing a divorce and got a different result.

edit -- also it would be interesting to note that Es' cover is presented in a similar fashion.. also projected on the cell walls like the other prisoners..

I think it’s changed to match the audio dramas a bit more (especially the newer ones like Mu) for the English viewers that don’t listen to them so they get information more accurate to the character rather than being symbolic or whatever
