    I've worked in the hotel industry in Manhattan for a couple years and it should be known that most housekeeping staff's are not actually making minimum wage. Most hotels in the city are unionized and so their wages are significantly higher than minimum wage. Just wanted to point that out.

    That cost though can be lessened by staying outside of Manhattan. I've stayed in a Holiday Inn in Queens which was $120/$150 per night. Yes, it did take about 45 minutes to Manhattan on the Subway and bus but I prefer that. It's away from the centre, it's still accessible (and easy to get around) 24/7 and it lets you get a much better idea of the city. It let's you take in so much more and experience so much more.
    The one thing I'd recommend though is checking out the safety of the area and what transit is like. Buses in New York are pretty poor in the early hours, whereas the Subway is fantastic.
    For me, I'll stay a little outside the major centre (30-45 minutes is fine) and I'll try be near a Subway line. After getting off my flight/train I'll use the Subway to get close to where I'm staying then Uber the rest of the way unless it's a couple minute walk in which case I'll walk it. I don't use buses with luggage as a rule unless it's a not so busy time. Luggage on a bus inconveniences me and others so I'd rather Uber to the subway and then just take the Subway the rest of the way

    Be aware that many hotel rooms in New York City only have a single queen or king-sized bed, not two double or queen beds as is standard in other places in the US. When booking a room, if you want two beds, make sure you are getting a room with two beds.
    Also, in addition to tipping the housekeeper, you are expected to tip the doorman if he gets you a cab or helps with your luggage.

    I recently stayed in an AirBnB rental in Queens for $60 a night. It was a very small apartment but just fine for me. The part of Queens was good.
    It makes a lot of sense to stay outside Manhattan I think because the subway is very reasonably priced and when on holiday a thirty or forty minute trip is not a big problem. Actually one of the subway trains I rode on frequently had great views as it ran on an elevated line.

    Great review, except for one thing. I have to disagree with you that hotels are expensive all year round. I was in New York City on December 23 and 24th of 2016. For those two nights, we stayed at the Sheraton New York Times Square Hotel at 7th and 53rd for $82 a night, with tax it came to $213.64 for the 2 nights! (If you don’t believe me, send me your e-mail and I will send you my receipts.) You may ask, my God, how did he get them for so cheap??? Well, whenever I travel, I always use Priceline. I have gotten some dirt cheap hotels in New York City by using Priceline. Just make sure you're either you use the Express Deal function, or the Name Your Own Price function. You will definitely save a ton of money on NYC hotel Rooms!!
    By the way, one of my favorite things to do while in the city is take a few rides on the Staten Island Ferry. You get a great view of the Harbor, a great view of the Statue of Liberty, and a Great view of Downtown Manhattan, and it is super cheap!! In fact, it is FREE!!!!!

    Used to live on the Upper West Side & there was a nearby hotel (Days Inn) that had been only $100 - $200 per night some times of the year (not the last time I checked, but got a real good deal when I went back to visit once). For me, the key about hotels is being sure that they are next to a subway stop (preferably an express stop). The subway will let you get just about anywhere really fast. (I hear the subway service has gone a little bad since I lived there, so maybe things have changed, but it used to be that taking the subway was a good way to avoid the street traffic if you were traveling long distances within Manhattan. For long distances it was much faster than a cab. I have it a little easier though in that I was traveling alone and so maybe the fare starts to add up if there are several people.

    🤔 The bathroom hang up has to be due to kids needing to go regularly or not being able to take them in to bars because when I travel with adult friends or solo, I simply stop at a cafe or bar when I need a bio break. Order a latte or beer and then hit the loo. Also a great time to rest the feet and to map out the next stop. Great video as always, Wolters.

    My cousin and I were really lucky because we split the cost of the hotel and it ended up to $500 each for a 3 night stay in NYC. We got a good deal from Groupon and our hotel was 5 minutes away from Time Square.

    You can get a room for around 114 in Feb. at hotels like Hampton Inn. Book early and call the hotel direct after already getting prices from other hotels in the general area. They will beat your best price because they want your business at that time of year. Dress warm! Oh, and go to Thalia to eat and do yourself a favor an check out the Marriott Times Square for great interior architecture(go to the 12th floor).

    Stay in a motel on Rt 46 in New Jersey. Take a New York Waterways ferry to NYC. Google it. NY Waterways has free buses from the dock. There is a parking lot for the ferry near the Lincoln Tunnel. Eat at a place on East Houston. The meals are big enough so you can skip a meal afterward. Also, try a papaya restaurant. Manhattan is a pain to drive in unless you are Jerry Seinfeld who can find a parking place anywhere.Make it a day trip by using a Chinatown bus to get there early in the morning and catch a Chinatown bus back late at night. Only $25 or less one way from Washington DC and they drop off in Manhattan.

    This channel is usually very accurate and probably the best travel channel out there, but the prices cited seem exaggerated. On Booking there are many rooms available in the $125-175/night range (e.g. Holiday Inn on Times Square, and similar). Granted it's a Monday January 14th. I checked the prices for this Friday and Saturday night and there are many highly-rated hotels for $150-175/night.

    If traveling alone, the POD hotels can be a bargain - especially if you plan to be more out-and-about in NYC for 3 or 4 days, and you want to keep most nights below $100.
    But they’re admittedly not luxurious, and not recommended for couples or families.

    Wolter, try the Yotel Hotel in the Hell's Kitchen district of Manhattan. Very good food there. Kind of undiscovered area that is quieter for second visits. Very eclectic, old world NYC feel to Hell's Kitchen, but not quite a Greenwich Village levels of artsy. It is more artesian than artsy.
    Don't let the Hell's Kitchen name throw you off. It a decent neighborhood. I've even walked out of my hotel room at 3am to get breakfast at a 24 hour diner four blocks north and one block east. I'm a woman who visits NYC alone, so Hell's Kitchen is a fairly quiet area with more living space and less hotels for tourists. It is also a safer area for being caught out after sunlight hours in the evening hours.
    The Yotel offers big windows in each room and beautiful waterfall showers with glass walls. I stay there every time I'm there and the hotel runs lots of deals on their app and website.
    Usually I go for the expensive options of a King Executive Room with an outdoor hot tub for $259 a night in January (it's my birthday, so I treat myself to the grandeur), but sometimes, the Yotel runs deals for a Queen Bed Room for $199 a night plus tax.
    The Yotel is close to the Jacob Javits Center, only four blocks west and three north from Times Square. It is not too far from the Skyline Park and the Meatpacking district. The Yotel is a very modern hotel. It reminds me of a giant, livable Apple Store. The big windows make it feel as though your room is pretty big even if it's just standard NYC tiny sizes. The Yotel is very, very clean! It also offers bunk room options for people traveling with children, which is very cool - you must check them out!
    I know that you've possibly heard of the Yotel in Amsterdam before with all of your travels, but in NYC it's not an airport layover hotel - it's an actual hotel that free stands near the Lincoln Tunnel entrance.
    There is some siren noise at night, so if you or anyone in your family are light sleepers, that would be the only downside. I feel like sirens blare all over NYC all night anyway, because that's NYC.
    Please check it out if you're there again. From one regular NJ tourist always in NYC for ComicCon/Star Trek/Hair Dressing conventions & birthdays each year to another tourist like yourself helping others with their wonderful advice.... I urge you to research it sometime.

    In most better hotels, a service charge of 10-15% is added to the bill...therefore, I wouldn't leave any additional tip for the housekeeping staff. In addition, again, most of the hotels in NYC have unionized housekeeping staff and are hardly making minimum wage so I wouldn't be worried about any of them starving or going homeless.

    I hate having to tip in the US, even for bad service. If you don't, then they let you know about it or give you bad service in future. Tipping should be for good service, not just for average or poor service. Once, I didn't tip in NY, because we got bad service and the waiter came over and deliberately dropped a plate on out table as we were leaving. Charming! I agree with tipping the maid, but tipping for the sake of it is stupid and wrong.

    • @SparklyMango13
      @SparklyMango13 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      happyhornet1000 waiters make little above two dollars an hour with the expectation that the rest of their income is coming from tips. Many also have to pay the bartender or busboy, so they can end up with less money then they began. For serving you.if you feel comfortable with someone paying to serve you.... I think that says terrible things about you.

    • @kylem1112
      @kylem1112 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      well technically you don't HAVE to tip. they're not going to strangle you until you fork over some dollars lol. it's just considered EXTREMELY rude and disrespectful. but if you have the " idon't give a fuck" attitude go for it lol it's not like you are going to see them again. and you can always use the foreigners card of "i didn't know"

      kale alien I fail to see how it is my problem that an employer isn’t paying a working wage. The rich keep getting richer with a mentality like yours. In Australia tips are unheard of but they make $15-$20 per hour...

    The tap water in NYC is excellent - that's why the bagels & pizza crust are so good. Airbnb & vacation rentals are ILLEGAL in NYC in buildings with more than 2 units (which is almost everywhere) & for less than 30 days. Don't do it, you may arrive to find your host has been evicted or shut down by the city for illegal Airbnb/rental activity & you'll have to pay last minute $$$$$ hotel prices.

    You must be staying in a super crappy hotel to have bad NY water. It actually tastes good. NYC water comes from upstate. Department stores, shopping malls, or any kind of shopping store and libraries, any building that let public visitors which are everywhere have clean bathrooms. It's not really a big problem. Get a room outside Manhattan ( Jersey or Queens ) and get an unlimited 7 day subway pass if you wanna $ave.

    A additional comment. Why avoid staying in the Financial District? When I am going to NYC on a weekend I always stay in the Financial District. If you are going to be in NYC over the weekend the hotels in the Financial District can be cheaper. They are there primarily for business purposes so they tend to more empty during the weekend and you can get deals. Also the Financial District has a lot going on. You are a short distance from major tourist sites: the Statue of Liberty/Battery Park, the World Trade Center, Brooklyn Bridge and the South Port Seaport. Also you are really just a quick subway ride from mid town. If you take an express from Wall Street, 42nd Street is just a couple stops away.

    never been to ny, but you talked about the water not tasting great which reminded me of wv. the water in wv tastes like sulfur. so so so bad. wv is pretty. very curvy roads, so if you get motion sickness like me you are gonna have issues. once we got off the highway the roads were so curvy. we would get to my great grandmother's house and i'd walk in the door say hi to everyone on my way to the couch to lay down. after about an hour I would get up and hug everyone to greet them. the coal mining business is booming and for whatever reason a lot of the mines have brought in people from other areas to mine. this means that while wv isn't typically a tourist state the hotel industry is doing pretty well. so if you are going to stop in wv for a night on your way to somewhere else, it could take a little while to find a place with a hotel room.

    Regarding the water: maybe I should get a bottle with a built-in filter, or a Sawyer filter that has a collapsible bag. Then I don't have to spend money on bottled water.
    (Who'd've thought that I would ever consider this in my own country?)

    Just small price correction: I'm just going to NYC at the end of June and I was able to find two double rooms or two queens for USD 200 / night (excl. TAX) - talking about Manhattan. Hotel Edison on Time Square - big room (26 sqm) for USD 200 / Four Point by Sheraton New York Downtown near Wall Str - small room (16 sqm) for USD 180. Both flexible with free cancellation up to 3 days prior check-in. I've never been to these hotels so my selection is based on reviews only.
    Also on the tap water: It's not so bad as presented here. I was always refilling my bottle with tap water and had no issues drinking it. More on water: www.nyc.gov/html/dep/html/drinking_water/index.shtml

    I stayed at the Roosevelt hotel... it’s very dated, wouldn’t recommend. It is a good location though. In fact we were just a block away from Grand Central but forgot to go there for the whole trip! We kept falling into the trap of heading straight down to Times Square every time.

    New York city used to have an excellent aquifer system and very good clean water, and if it's not that way now it could be the old plumbing in the buildings or infrtructure needing new water pipes.
    In regard to the occomosations well it's not that expensive when you look around to other countries and their prices for tourist destinations.

    I generally agree with Mark's views - but I have always understood NYC's tap water to be quite good. They have an exhibit dedicated to it (the tap water!) at the Museum of Natural History; it's been given credit for the taste and quality of the bagels, etc. So....Mark has it wrong regarding the water.....it's not only safe, it's very high quality and tasty. Maybe his hotel does have something wrong....

  • @chpmatt
    @chpmatt 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Bad tap water? Eh...no. Not true. Also, the best tip you can give is to stay just outside the city (New Jersey, etc) you’ll save tons of $ on hotels and it’s a short bus ride ride into the Port Authority.

    my hotel will be in Manhattan so I can get to javits center for playfair on November 4th. I'm leaving early on the 3rd have direct flight to Newark united coach payed for gaurnteed seat. Then leaving on 5th 7:30pm flight back from Newark to South bend. Yeah I'll be back late as I don't even live in South bend. So ride back puts me home at 11 most likely. I just don'twant to get lost.

    Sorry but you've put me off wanting to go there. Expensive hotels that give you small rooms and don't add the taxes on to the price advertised (I can never understand why America has this system.) Dispite paying a lot of money you have to "tip" the maid EVERY day? If I'm paying that much I expect it to be done for free it not my fault they work for a tight arse owner. You give me the impression that everyone's out to rip you off.

    You can get a better rate if you book last minute. if they haven't booked all the rooms, they lower the prices so they don't have rooms sitting empty for the night.

    How about staying in a hotel in New Jersey and taking transportation over to New York?

    • @billyd10
      @billyd10 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That is an excellent option. Jersey City has some excellent hotels. It is right across the Hudson from Manhattan and you are in Manhattan very quickly via the PATH trains. Prices tend to be cheaper. There are interesting things to see both in Jersey City and Hoboken plus you have great views of the Manhattan skyline.
