    I remember playing Rebel Assault when it was new and I remember everyone telling me it is amazing....
    But I always thought exactly what James & Mike think here.

      +Veggie Gamer There was star wars rebel assault for the p.c. It was an MSDOS game. Maybe they were talking about that one because i played that one on pc with a joystick back in the day and it was awesome!

      jmatt781 Dude, i bet you're right, arrow keys would be a nightmare! Thank god i had a hip pilot Uncle back in the day that always got me the newest flight sim and joystick every Christmas. I honestly wish i could go back and unwrap all of them again, i got so excited back then!!

    • @jmatt781
      @jmatt781 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Chemdog Ninetyone That's awesome! Man, one of my biggest regrets was getting rid of this kickass flight stick that I was originally using for Mechwarrior 3 and some ww2 dogfight games back in the early 2000's. This thing had torso twisting, a throttle, a secondary thumbstick for looking on the top, and like 12 or so programable buttons. Now that there is a new resurgence of kickass flight games, I really wish that I still had it... such a damn shame.... gah!

    The 32x game isn't based off the 1983 game, it's based off of a sega game released in the 90's that wasn't released in the us, and only had a limited release elsewhere. It's a direct port of that game

    • @cj694x2

      It was released in the US, but it was very rare apparently. I actually played it in the arcade when I was a kid.

    • @brandonthetoyandgamecollector

      ***** It was? I heard it wasn't. Either way it is a rare game, i had trouble finding a picture of what the game looked like but i found it once.

      +Brandon Martinez I've seen two units of this game. One at a local arcade here on Long Island and another at the Pizza Planet Arcade in Disney MGM Studios. The machine was gigantic to fit two players and a force feedback seat.

      Arcade Hunters I live near disney world and have been to mgm studios many times, while there is a sega star wars arcade game at pizza planet, it's not this one, it's a completely different and much better game, star wars trilogy arcade

    Star Wars Arcade on 32X is actually a port of the 1993 Star Wars arcade game by Sega. Hardly anyone seems to know about it, so most people assume that the 32X version was a port of Atari's 1983 Star Wars game.

    When I was a kid, I made some progress into Rebel Assault on Sega CD. When I tried to revisit it about a year ago, I ran into the same problems that you guys experienced. There is a knack to navigating Beggar's Canyon, but I never mastered it.

  • @terminaldeity

    I remember playing a demo of Rebel Assault at CompUSA back in the day. They had it set up on a PC, but with a mouse for controls, which made it even worse, but I have memories of getting to the next stage. Pretty sure it uses flight-stick style controls, as in, you have to pull up while turning to do a sharper turn. I think that's what was throwing Mike and James off.

  • @Mostlyharmless1985

    • @Mostlyharmless1985
      @Mostlyharmless1985 9 ปีที่แล้ว +56

      ***** because these were the days where men were men, women were also men, and so were the boys, and possibly the girls.
      You didn't get spoonfed information. You figured it out. You are flying a plane in a canyon, you pull up while rotating to make a sharp turn. This is a port of a PC game where we had flight joysticks. It might not be obvious to modern gamers, but when your choices were "go outside" and "play the game, figure it out you fuck." you did the latter if you had the appropriate amounts of vitamin d deficiency.

      +Mostlyharmless1985 Hey, being spoonfed information is something I hate about modern games. I'm not asking for the game to shove tutorials down my throat. All I ask is that when I press left, I go left, and when I press right, I go right. I guess I'm just old fashioned that way. I like to think that's not asking too much.

    Loved Rebel Assault on PC. Played with a joystick back in the day, and the game is really meant to be played that way, imo. Basically the control issue was that you needed to pull back (or "down") rather than right because your craft was nose diving into the wall. You were pressing right, and it was already "rolled right" all the way.
    In addition to this, isn't there a configuration screen to alter the controls? I think you can either select between "flight mode" or "pad mode" or maybe it was Invert Y Axis: On/Off. I can't remember.

    • @ugzz
      @ugzz 6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Actually, if you press start on sega cd you can invert the controls to flight mode. Also yes, pressing down 100% solves the problem, and it's in the manual.. Sadly thousands of people have seen this and will assume the game is unplayable shit.. too bad. It's actually pretty fun

    I had Rebel Assault I and II on the PC back in the day. I loved them. I played the thing with a Joystick and I believe it's supposed to be like a plane where you tilt and pull back to turn harder. I imagine it's harder on console of course.

    • @desepticon4
      @desepticon4 9 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      +Woogy Wips Yeah you need to do banking turns. This was how I played it on my mac. It might not even be possible on the Sega controller. Although I think I remember the controller have 8 way movement, not sure.

    • @Ramjet164
      @Ramjet164 9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yeah, ur bang on correct there.
      I had the pc version back in the day and later picked up the 3do and sega cd ports cheap. The turning is possible but it's much easier to get the way it works on a joystick. The 3do version looks better than this but the pc one is the one to have.

    Rebel Assault definitely takes some getting used to, in terms of the flight controls and vehicle handling. I struggled with for quite a while before finally "getting it" and progressing through the rest of the game. Rebel Assault II was a better effort.
    As for Star Wars Arcade for 32X, that game was a real disappointment. After initially being impressed by the graphics, the gameplay bored me to complacency and convinced me to play Virtua Racing instead.

    • @Gasoline85
      @Gasoline85 9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      +Buc Whovian yeah there are a couple on foot stages in both Assault and Assault II. I actually finished them both back in the day on my Sega CD, still have them stored somewhere. But yeah the controls took a while. You actually have to steer BEFORE you reach the point as the game take s a couple frames to respond.

    Holding right will only TILT your ship right, but pressing UP WHILE TILTING right will move you in the direction AWAY from the right wall.
    Unfortunately doing this will not make the game anymore fun, just less confusing.

      I wish I could remember more about it. I suppose if I checked out some other videos of the game it might refresh my memory. I remember I really loved the game once I figured out how it worked. It was one of those games that expected you to fail at least 1,800 times before you got it right. I had Star Wars: Rebel Assault on PC. I was wondering what that DOS Star War flying game I played a long time ago. Thanks Cinemassacre for remembering that Star Wars game I played a long time ago! But that game is a lot better played on PC than on Sega CD, from the looks. Although I don't remember how well it controls on PC but you do use a mouse (I think, if I remembered correctly).

    Also a best description for Beggar's Canyon in Rebel Assault is the following: "Magnets in the walls"

    I learned about vector in graphic design. Vector is still used just like pixels. Vector is used in the designing industry like creating logos, typography, or any other kind of thing associated with graphic designing. Pixels are used for printing, photos, computer screens, and other stuff. Both of them offer advantages and disadvantages and used for certain situations kind of like how we use planes and helicopters for certain jobs.

    Tis the season to remember getting Star Wars games around the Christmas Season. I didn't have a Sega Genesis, 32X, or Sega CD at the time. What I did have was a pretty powerful CD-rom PC of my own. So one Christmas both me and a friend got Rebel Assault, his on the Sega CD, mine for MS-DOS. Now that year he got Star Wars Arcade for the 32X. Which he thought was the coolest Star Wars thing ever... Until he saw what I got: Star Wars: Dark Forces. He was also rather shocked by my getting Star Wars: TIE Fighter that year(it was a couple years after the games were released so they were less expensive so we got a bunch of older games.). Nothing, but nothing was as great as Rebel Assault and TIE Fighter on PC, while using a top of the line flight stick. Release for release, PC platform Star Wars games always came out on top compared to console games.

    With rebel assault, the trick was, pushing right or left only 'rolls' the craft and then you would have to 'pull up' to turn to the right. Similar to how Elite Dangerous works. So to turn right where you were crashing heaps. 'roll' right and then up to pull up (or down if up and down controls was inverted) and you'll see how fast the ship will move to the right.

    They could easily do vector graphics on the 32x - The 3D provided by the SH2 processors means the power to do simple vectors is already there! They could have done a port of the original arcade if they wanted to. This game was based on the 'Star Wars Arcade' not to be confused with the original Star Wars vector graphics game released to arcades. They didn't help themselves by adding 'arcade' into the title of the newer game, since the original was an arcade game as well.

    Rebel Assault controls are awful. But, I had saved up to buy this game and it was one of the few Sega CD games I had back in the early 90's, so I stuck with it. James is onto something when he says that you have to time your moves perfectly and quickly or else the chain of events cannot be stopped. Like a Quick Time game. After I got that concept the game was playable and actually enjoyable. Between rage quits that is. On a side note it is a little better on the 3DO as you can use the Flightstick Pro. Well, maybe not better but different lol

    According to the manual for Rebel Assault, you have to press UP and Right/Left to turn hard. This would be the equivalent of pulling on the flight stick during a turn to actually turn hard. If you just banked an aircraft, but didn't pull up, it would barely turn.

    This is actually based on a newer Star Wars Arcade that uses flat-shaded polygons. The difference between the arcade cabinet version and the 32X version of the game is the arcade version is higher resolution with more complex models and a higher framerate. I can't really fault James and Mike for not seeming to know this because I only recently became aware of this myself. But yes this is not based on the old vector graphics based Star Wars arcade, at least no more than the polygonal arcade version was. There is footage of the actual polygonal Star Wars Arcade right here on TH-cam.

    Vector = point, line, and polygons.
    Raster = cell size, giving resolution. For example 8-bit means 2^8=256. You get your colors, for example, by taking values from 0-255 in RGB for each individual pixel.
