    Aw snap, u broke down the Saunders formula. I wish sometimes he stayed dark instead of offering the vitamin pill at the end. I love "The Falls" (in a later collection). Still always get sucker-punched by the last page of "The 400 Pound CEO." Great review!

    AMAZING review! "tenth of dec" was my favorite book read in 2016. I'm looking forward to reading everything he publishes!!!!

    It felt very samey to me too. Pastoralia is one of my favourite short stories ever and the whole collection is great. I'm glad though that I read Pastoralia before CW as Pastoralia (the story) is again similar to CW and I might have been think it was going to be another whole collection on the same theme, but the rest of the collection is quite different.

    I haven't read this collection, though I absolutely adored Pastoralia, In Persuasion Nation, and Tenth of December, so I'm sure I'll read this one eventually. I'm so excited to see what he does with a novel.

    Pastoralia is a masterpiece - every story is a gem

    I felt similar things about the novella that finishes this collection. Honestly, though, the title story is simply one of my favorite pieces of fiction in existence. I'm really interested in your thoughts on Tenth of December, as I found it underwhelming for the most part.

      Oh snap! I thought it was the other way around - that you loved Tenth of December but didn't like CivilWarLand very much! The title story is GOLD, by far my favorite in the collection :) (that's probably why I found it underwhelming that the third, about the Wavemaker, mirrors it in many ways).

    I cannot wait to read Lincoln in the Bardo. In Persuasion Nation is incredible, you really should check that out. Would love to hear a review of Tenth of December, probably his best book...until now? Well done.

    Those blurbs from Pynchon, Smith, etc. are all general blurbs, not necessarily for Lincoln in the Bardo. The Pynchon quote comes from the blurb for CivilWarLand in Bad Decline. Saunders is the man. One thing- I don't necessarily agree that sentiment is a byproduct of his early work or that sentiment, in general, is a thing to be avoided. Other than that, everything you said pretty much sums up my thoughts on the collection. In his later work, his prose style really develops. Interesting writer, one of our best, for sure.

      Oh that's actually very good to know, I thought they referred specifically to the novel. Thanks man! And I don't think sentiment should be avoided at all - I'm probably just too much of a hardened bastard ^^. (I did cry my eyes out with La La Land last saturday though D: )

    I've got bits of Saunders stories floating around the old noggin. But I'm not sure where they're from. Probably from Pastoralia and Tenth December as I have those two. I really enjoyed the Brain Dead Megaphone - a non-fiction collection for amongst other things a wonderful piece on Donald Bartleheme's 'The School'. My copy of Tenth of December opens with this extraordinary puff piece which kind of over eggs things!

      It might be because several of his stories tend to share theme and setting AND tone and humor. It's fine because they are all great, but it is quite difficult to pinpoint some of his pieces.

      She is an amazing writer. And the novel is very Joycean in the way it's written. A wonderful book, I think, and short so doesnt take long.

    Also, what exactly does it mean to be an Amazon "affiliate?"

    • @TheBookchemist
      @TheBookchemist  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      It means that you provide your readers/viewers/friends with links to buy things on Amazon, for instance I do that in the description box of my videos, and when people click on those links you get a tiiiiiiiny amount of money. Then, if after clicking on the link they do buy stuff on Amazon, you get a small percentage of the price they pay for that stuff. If you already buy on Amazon, it's a good way to support your favorite channels or websites - you'll find that many of those are Amazon affiliates :)

      The_Bookchemist Oh!! I'll definitely start buying them that way, since I order from Amazon anyhow. :-)
