Perfect timing. I just decided to go with Custodes for my first army. Barely hedging out Necrons. I’m loving how Custodes feel all around at my friends’ tables.
Anyone looking to get into Custodes should also be aware that they’re only half an army without the Forge World range. The models you need from FW change from edition to edition, but if you want to play Custodes at a competitive level you're going to need one or two units from the FW range at minimum. For example, in 9th edition the Sagittarum Guard and Telemon Dreadnought were almost auto-include in some capacity for their ranged output and durability respectively. In 10th now it's all about the Calladius Grav Tank and Ventatari Guard for their ranged output and mobility.
I personally find the warden kit a lot easier to work with than the Custodian guard kit, and I really like the warden shield captain a lot more than the standard one. Also while a cool kit, I find the vertus praetors an absolute pain to get on the table top. They take a surprising amount of time to assemble, magnetise (lance arms & flight stand) & paint.
A someone who joined the 10,000 at the start of 10th edition, those are definitely the main concerns I've had with picking up Praetors. I'd be terrified of those lances snapping travelling to a game!
I highly agree about the Wardens. I had so much fun building them since they have minor pegs that help attaching the arms. Making the building process less stressful compared to basic guard kit/other kits where they have no pegs and you have to juggle getting the glued properly and oriented in the correct pose. Many a time I had arm bits that just did not cure and fell to pieces >< With better looks and easy to build, very tempting for me to make a lot of wardens and identify them as the Guard squads and paint/mark the Real Wardens for gameplay 😆
GKs are not bad, Ive been able to win most games with them, even against Eldars. But you are hardlock to use a 10man paladin bomb and spam mist of demios strat.

How convenient, last week I ended up impulse buying some custodian guard to try painting as shadowkeepers. Still kinda hoping some of their FW stuff gets plastic versions with the new codex though, don't really feel like getting anything FW with how likely it is to get squatted.
Has a custodes player I can tell you, great army to paint, play and collect. It's just currently (with the last Balance update), the custodes feel really weak for their point cost. Hope the codex fix that

Didn't know where to post, hence here. Not sure if that goes for other killteams aswell.
Ok, I've got a bone to pick with you @Auspex Tactics. I literally said to my friend yesterday "I'm thinking of starting Custodes" Are you in my phone? Are you listening?😂

Awesome video, as always. But I do have a minor criticism. There was no mention of things like their gunship or dropship. I know they're out of stock right now, but I'm curious how you'd rate them for play? Also, I've noticed for both Custodes and Grey Knights, they have a resin Land Raider. What is the difference, game wise, between the plastic and resin ones? Do the resin ones have different rules?
There is no Resin LR for Custodes, it’s just a plastic Landraider Godhammer Pattern (the basic Lascannon one). The Flyers are big points, although I’ve been using one of my Ares for meme lists. It’s fun but costs a ton of points.
I love me Custodes. I have 15 Guard, a Blade-Champ, and Trajann, and it's a little more than 1k points. Hoping they get a real detachment rule in the next balance update lol
This is awesome! Can you do ones on Death Guard or Dark Angels? I’m trying to get started in 40k and those are the two I am most interested in. Although, after this video I might take a look into Custodes 😂
Custodes are not ‘chunky’ in the current meta. Before the ‘Balance Update’ they were relatively easy to field with just GW stuff, and do ok. Like most armies you’re not winning a GT unless you’re really good, but after the Update you’re not winning no matter how good you are..no GT (or higher) winners. If I was starting I’d stick with Infantry stuff, the Bikes are actually Garbage. They were bad in the initial Index and unbelievably got worse. I’ve been playing them since they came out for 30K, so been through the rollercoaster of ‘Custodes are great!..oh GW..Custodes are horrible’. I’d grab a few boxes of Allarus, Guards and 2 boxes of Wardens to start. Sisters are cheap trash units for Primaries and Secondaries and Assassins can really help. Kyria Draxus is a good Inquisitor to grab also. I own a ton of FW but I know a lot of people won’t or cannot. Only FW that really works right now is Caladius Grav Tanks and Venetari. My 2 cents. No idea what the Codex will have but doubt they change the data sheets much.
Then what do you do when Aeldari inevitably get nerfed after the next dataslate? Sell those as well for the next big thing? Buy models because you think they're cool, not because of the meta.

Hard disagree. In terms of collecting the army, the new combat patrol is amazing. All of the units in it are at least usable even at a competitive level (albeit custodian guard aren't common beyond 1 squad) and 2 of the units--the blade champion and wardens--are some of the best units in the codex right now. Agreed. It's not even that they slate did them in. The faction balance was pants to begin with. Basically only good for infantry and calladius spam. I preferred 9th where I could run a combination of infantry, bikes and dreads and have a varied gameplan.
@@dthomd yeah I don't care about winning or losing I pick my list for fun. It's a hard task finding a fun list with custodes though as our dreads are slow and weak, sagi are wet blankets, bikes oh my God why why why. Even before the nerf custodes and fight first was such a stifling combo that I personally did not like at all. They've ruined this army at the list building phase which is my favourite phase!
Meta chasing like that is just nonsensical though. The meta changes constantly so for all you know they might become great following the next dataslate. This is why collecting because of Rule of Cool is key.
@@Duttyboy2402yeah, i still will build an army because its cheap, easy to understand your units and good for lewrning 40k in general, an army to have when friends come over
I saw this thumbnail and thought exactly this. They got nerfed multiple times and are in a very shabby state. I’ve now got models I can’t play that I took ages painting up. Let’s face it. GW are trying to put out too much and can’t get it right at all.
Now is the best time to start collecting. All the meta chasers are selling off their armies. I main Custodes and I'm still playing my beloved bananas through their slump. The idea that your army will always be the best, or even good is silly.
Can't play is different than won't play because you're not happy with how they're doing in the meta. The game is actually decently balanced at the moment and the next balance dataslate will hopefully continue to improve on the first. Do Custodes need help? Yes. Are they unplayable? No, and if you won't play them while they're down on the meta go play another faction until they get buffed to a level you feel you can win again.@@xommul79

The army is terrible right now. Pretty bad TBH...Best time to collect.
Custodes really got unlucky with their "discount" starter box.
I need a tuto on How to NOT begin a new army xD
Step 1 : Be Henry Cavill
let's just all agree custodes are the least fun army to play against by anl long way and move on with our lives
I bought and painted 3 terminators and then stopped because the army turned into trash
Meta chasing like that is just nonsensical though. The meta changes constantly so for all you know they might become great following the next dataslate. This is why collecting because of Rule of Cool is key.
@@Duttyboy2402yeah, i still will build an army because its cheap, easy to understand your units and good for lewrning 40k in general, an army to have when friends come over
Step 0 - Sell both kidneys. What are they even good for?
its easy! at this moment don't

By the time your Custodes are built, painted and organised, the meta has changed 2x again. Collect what you think is cool, not what is meta.
