    Stephen Fry and zoologist Mark Carwardine head to the ends of the earth in search of animals on the edge of extinction.
    In New Zealand the travellers make their way through one of the most dramatic landscapes in the world. They are on a journey to find the last remaining kakapo, a fat, flightless parrot which, when threatened with attack, adopts a strategy of standing very still indeed.

    It's a larger bird than I had thought...but still so vulnerable. So much in those eyes...How can you not want to protect it?

    Those saying the bird is named after the fruit, do some research, The Kiwi was named first, the fruit,is chinese gooseberry, was re named Kiwi Fruit after they were started to be grown here

      Fun fact, it was renamed to Kiwi Fruit when Zespri started exporting it to America, because the Chinese are communist and they thought that would hurt sales over there.

      Actually, the "fruits" are really the "eggs" from the kiwi bird. In time a beak will pop out as well as legs and there you got a full grown tasty kiwi

    Stephen Fry is an angel with a wonderful sense of humor. I think it's brilliant how he uses his star power/celebrity reknown/famous name to help with worthy causes like conservation - and bipolar mental illness. - I love him!

    Kiwi's are so unique and special. To lose our national bird (who is now closer to a mammal than bird, evolutionarily speaking) would be a great upset. Fortunately for the kiwi, it's cute, therefore conservation funding is reasonably easy to obtain. We have many other native treasures that aren't so cute, that are threatened or endangered that need our help such as native gecko's, skink's and invertebrates such as weta.

    I've got a friend who lived in Ohope and there are kiwis in the bush behind the houses on Pohutukawa Ave. Sometimes they are so loud at night that they wake people up.

    @wkkimmy After doing a little checking, it seems the bird had the name first. The fruit was not known as a Kiwi until the 1950s apparently.

    i think this programme is quite commendable. one of the reasons most people don't care about this sort of thing is that they aren't aware of it...... by letting people know about this stuff we are broadly helping a cause.

  • @mli2009

    Kiwis are only in NZ, and the reason that they have one is that they pulled it out of it's nest (it was having a sleep).
    And the description is off.

    ripping? its not like its been physically attached to the hole. they just removed it to look at it. didnt harm it at all.
    of course the kiwi didnt understand what was going on so it might have been upset. but still.

    Are there any kiwis that have evolved a defense mechanism to stoats, weasels, and dogs such as climbing, burrowing, etc. or is the selection pressure too much?

    @wkkimmy Just a bit of useless information in case you are even slightly interested. Feel free to forget. Kiwi fruit is Yang-Tao, or the Chinese Gooseberry. It was brought to NZ in the late 1800s - early 1900s. It flourished and the NZ farmers decided to rename it in the 1950s so that the fruit grown in NZ wouldn't be confused with that grown in China (there was alot of anti-China sentiment at the time as China was considered an ally with the then USSR during the Cold War).

  • @wendighoul
    @wendighoul 14 ปีที่แล้ว

    @wkkimmy To be honest, it was mostly Wikipedia where I got the info, so not exactly 100% reliable. However, it did say that the bird was named based on the Maori word, and that the fruit only got the name later, when the old name, the Chinese Gooseberry, fell out of favor.

    @iSeiranai -- Neither did I. I always had the impression that they might be about the size of a largish quail or something (I've only ever seen them filmed once before), but by the look of things, it's quite a bit bigger (as well as quite a bit heavier) than that. I wish they hadn't dragged it out by its feet, though...and I don't blame it one bit for struggling! How would one of THEM have liked it if something much bigger had dragged him out of his house by his feet??

  • @RunawayKiwi
    @RunawayKiwi 10 ปีที่แล้ว

    They are being protected though. That's why there are banding projects, mainland islands, and reintroduction schemes. It's not quite enough, but our government insists on cutting DOC's funding and staff, so for what they've got to work with they're not doing too badly. It's more concerning that of our the five commercially fished whitebait species, four are critically endangered and have no legal protection. Kiwi have it pretty good in comparison.
