I'm really trying to get the new deer pen thinned out before spring shows up and the trees bud out. Hard work in the cold.

what drone is that?
Heath, as far as I’m concerned you’ve showed nothing but determination and great progress on your ranch and I can truly say so much more being a husband and father. You and Cedar are the best and thanks for your videos! 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼🤩🤩🤩💯💯💯👏👏👏
Hi, I have a suggestion for you.
Instead of evenly thinning out the whole area in a homogenous way, rather thin it out in patches so you have areas of woodland, and areas of grassland, each say 1 to 4 acres in size.
This is much more in line with what nature does and creates a better environment for wildlife.
Grassy areas grow thick, healthy grass, and woody areas are dense enough to create shelter for birds and animals.
Sir, with the kindest respect, you might find clearing your land easier using a mulcher attachment to one of your tractor units, skid steer. Love your content.
In Wisconsin when you clearcut a forest the bull thistle protects the ground from erosion the first two years. The third year the birds have seeded the blackberries, blackcaps and wild raspberries. The fourth year the fast-growing poplar trees are overtaking the berries. By the 10th year the hardwoods are growing. Mother Nature's way of feeding the birds and animals and preventing the soil from being washed away.
Most folks don't understand good Land Management and Forest Stewardship. It looks to me like you have it handled pretty well. 👍👍 Just watch out for those Widow Makers...............>
Time for some PPE (Personal protective equipment) ie, chainsaw chaps, hard hat/cap and safety specs, you are not invinceable and your family needs you to support them 👍
I have been in the hospital , so I'm glad to be up to the current video !! TAKE CARE & TAKE CARE OF THE FAMILY !! I LOVE YOU ALL !!! 😘😘😘😘😘😘😘
Get well Mary 😊😊
@@SillyMe2718 Thank You so much ! I'm trying !!
Cutting down trees without heavy duty gloves, eye protection or a helmet is sure tempting fate, I found it ironic that in this episode your sponsor was a life insurance company. Heath you're a wise man, you're a Husband and a Father with so much to live for. Please take good care of yourself.
To prevent the majority of your hazardous tree splits. Make a thin cut on the opposite side of the tree, an inch or two deep. And below your planned cut. Do this, Before making your primary cut.
You find that the exciting events will occur less often.
Just view some professional logging shows/videos.
I learned from my father who worked in the woods, most of his life.
It’s interesting that the claims at this point he has more experience than anyone around, yet he hasn’t learned that most simply principle of doing a back cut first like you just described
In the wild, Deer use clusters of trees for shade and to knock the wind off themselves in the winter. Its good to leave a thicket if even a small one as its more natural
I'm pretty sure he talked in previous videos about leaving hedges of branches, etc. to provide habitat for the small animals as well as for the reasons you mention above. He's on top of this.
Search leaners and barber chairs. You seem to have a lot of leaners on the property. They store up a great deal of energy, compression and tension. If you cut like you're doing and it goes wrong, well, that's why they call them widow makers. There are 'safer' techniques for falling the larger ones.
Thank you for the videos
thank you for having us and showing us a piece of your daily activities, look forward to seeing more be safe!!
Dang, I was thinking you were in danger even before that really close call! You have a lot of trees kicking back because you're not using a notch and hinge method. One of these days, one of those could smack you upside the head and put you out of commission for good. Take your time, do it right, and get home to Cedar.
When I used to clear along the sides of fields, I had a VW hood that I kept my fire on. I would pull my hood filled with hot coals along with me. I didn't leave burn spots, and I only had to start one fire each day.
I added one more cut to the way you are doing. I always cut the top off between where the firewood ended and where the top began.
We used a old 1947 Dodge 3 ton truck hood worked good
@@jim6390
That would be bigger than our VW hood.
We talked about getting something bigger
Great idea! Going to use that.
@@kendall959 we used a hood for a lot of things hauling wood in snow burning brush a lot of things it had a tipped up front pull through snow easier any size will work metal is better just fine a old car scrap yard
Good progress for keeping those woods thinned out to help fire management!!
Thanks for sharing and taking us along
Youre a great narrator no matter the subject... thank you
Great video. Stay safe.
Wow! Lots of stumps to get out!!
+ 1 for a notch and hinge especially on this big ones
Thanks for sharing your thought process, it’s interesting to understand how you pick the trees to cut. Stay safe!
It’s so interesting to see that the deer have no fear whatsoever of the drone (maybe even a little curiosity for it). Compared to how skittish they are around people even after you’re put in a ton of effort to win their trust.
And the roaming cows seemed more afraid of it
I enjoy your channel! I like listening to your narrative.
Can't believe how chill ur deer are with the drone.
Love the channel and im a big fan of ALMOST everything you do. Your chainsaw work and safety is kinda scarry LOL It seems to be close to tragic every time you try to cut a bigger tree or one thats leaning. Be careful bud.
@redpoppyranch I love this type of content. I have a suggestion, save all the clearing footage and make a time lapse of the property. Keep it up buddy, your am inspiration!
God’s blessings 🙏❤️🙏❤️🙏 , stay safe and warm everyone!!
What about leaving sections of trees thicker for shade for the deer and then some thinned out areas for grass growth
Oh my goodness you scared me with those trees take care of yourself. God Bless You and your family. Love seeing you and your family each week. Love Lorri from Kentucky.
So many questions....
1- Do you leave all the stumps? Seems like you removed them before.
2- Could you make a removable, insulated cover (like a tall, narrow doghouse) for the deer pen hydrant?
3- Do you worry about the deer attracting natural predators?
4- Is there a reason you don't wear protective gear when cutting trees? What is your backup system for summoning help on the mountain?
I enjoy your stories and philosophical outlook on life, however I worry about safety. Ruby is a beautiful buddy. You all have a unique bond.
Until next time.
Can't wait till the bumpside is on the road, and I could watch you cut trees all day!👍
Hey Heath,
If you want to cut costs by a bunch, look at how to paddock the pastures you have so that your deer can only access sections or quadrants on a given day. Think of a slice of pie vs the whole pie. While they graze on slice, the other slices are 'resting', 'recovering' from the last time they were grazed. Deer aren't naturally grazers. Deer are browsers. Worth some thought 🤔
Heath, Cedar, and kids. I love the drone and regular camera footage. That is a lot of tree cutting. Being out there in the mountain air. Has to be very healthy and spiritual for you. Well my Swiss Family Robinson until next time. Please, take care and stay safe. Love ya 🥤🥤🍺🍺😇🌈🇺🇸🌞😘❤️🕊🎈🙏🌹👍
Thanks and GOD BLESS
I enjoy watching you with all the things you do! You do so much it hard to keep up with you.
Enjoyed watching you dance the Maple Merengue! LOL. Glad you didn't get hurt Heath.
Very curious as to why you leave so much tree stump sticking up from the roots when you cut a tree down? why not cut closer to the ground?
Put a cut on the back side about two inches deep before you start the main cut bru
Thanks for sharing!
It's about time you got a drone, Stretch. That property looks great from an aerial view.
HEY! Hello red Poppy!!
Great progress. Don't remember the name of it, but Lumnah Acres had a huge outside of the house heat source that burns wood, trash, leaves and all to heat their house. Should check it out. They live in snow being in New Hamshire, and they are also off grid. Blessings!
Only mentioning since you have tons of acreage and tons of unneeded trees and limbs....
Watching the Super Bowl halftime show. Yuck! Thank God for RPR.
and Thank God for the ability to fast forward thru the half time show and all the ads.
Yea, it was really awful. Had to go clean the house for 15 minutes. Then didn't watch much of the game either. KC wasn't doing much. NFL has lost my interest with all the wokeness.
A master plumber with frozen yard hydrants!
weird statement isnt it? Thats like saying something about a car mechanic that had a car that got a broken part.
Plumbing in Arizona vs Idaho is a real difference. A good idea when relocating is to consult locals.
I found out why my forced air heater had ductwork under my house in northern Illinois. I turned it off/ blocked the outlet. It took three days for my waterlines to thaw. Very lucky, non of the waterlines burst.
@erehwon9371 good point
Great job! You're such a hard worker!!
Cedar , please have Heath learn how to properly and safely fall a tree.
And yes, it looked worse than when it happened..😂 I actually thought you were trying to set the tree down softer..😅😂😊 Love ya'll ❤
Been watching since 2018. Haven't missed a video
🙋♀️❤️. So many maple trees. Have you considered making maple syrup?
I love to watch your dogs hang out with you! Best Buds! Lol.
Thanks for the video.
Suggest you put insulated covers on your frozen hydrant. Love your videos.
from listening i if i understand correctly you won't be removing stumps
so i am suggesting in future
rent shear that mounts on skidsteer and shear stump flush with ground other options similar but attachment clamps on and can pull stumps out but little skidsteer may not have enough umph to pull out stump this puller doesn't require digging out root ball so technically less ground tore up
I am glad that was not a widow maker tree fall!!
no you are making giant progress - add some manure to help the grass grow, think about planting some apple trees or nut trees - do 2 or 3 paddocks where you plant some forage strips and you can rotate them through those every 8-10 weeks - clover or alfalfa
When I see you slip on the ice it makes me wonder if you know about Yaktrax? I have them for my walking shoes when it's icy here. It may be worth the investment to keep from falling. Thanks for sharing!
Looks like you are having too much fun 😊.
From Neil schwerdt in west valley city Utah
Hey Heath check out the song called The Trees by Rush, I think you’ll get a kick out of it if you haven’t heard it ✌️
I'm surprised you haven't made a lean to over that feeder for them helps keep hay dry too. ❤ Your 🔥 not real wild anymore looks hot. That property has changed so much you should be proud of how clean & organize it is..great job Heath 👍
Enjoyed your taking us along the ride up the trail. Praying for you and family concerning all things important to you. Hope that all is well and that you'll be happy, safe, healthy, discerning, strong and successful in the name of Jesus ☝ 🙏 🙌 💪. Blessings and prayers for all your needs, commitments, projects, and your personal goals for 2025.👍🖐
the whole mountain is almost bare ... congrads ... didnt take you long at all to strip it
Always enjoyable to see how you are getting on. Disregard the haters. Thanks for the effort you put into making these films.
Love it so much keep it up as always 💘💖😁
Good evening RPR 😊
Watch some chainsaw safety videos. Watch some chainsaw accident videos too.
Remember when you find out the frost level in your area. Build your self a contingency, go deeper with your water lines.
Yes, and snow is an insulator, so it probably froze just outside the deer pen where he plows the snow away for his little road
Something I learned about 35 yrs ago, the older I get ,the more I learn, the more I realize how little I actually have learned.
I got to say it😊 😂 sharpen your chainsaw. Great video
Hiiiiiiii 💖💖💖
🦌🦌
Wow in Minnesota if you had a 60 year old maple it was probably over a foot thru the middle
Are you keeping the stumps in the deer pin or removing them in future? Thanks for the weekly videos
Peace
A+
YOU NEED TO BUY BOOT CLEETS SO YOU DON'T FALL SO MUCH
Wait until next fall when the larger maple trees start dropping those cute little helicopter seeds all over creation. On the other hand, the deer will probably eat the leaves off the smaller trees.
You can seed that ground also?
What are you going to do with the stumps?
He has an excavator with thumb.
How often are you changing out the chain ?
What made you start keeping deer on your land?
California could use your help
He’d kill the whole Forrest
NO, you end up with results like that from NOT NOTCHING your Tree!
Do you know those firewood X shaped bucking racks? I saw a guy in the Italian mountains make a long one with 3 Xs big enough to hold about 15 to 20 8 foot, 2 to 3" logs. Then with one big cut, he has 15 to 20 pieces of firewood with no splitting. Seems a waste to burn all that wood in the brush piles. Take the firewood bucking horse to the trees so no lugging the long poles. His horse folded too for easy transport. Fast and efficient!
So you also watch Matijns' videos. 👍🏼.
23:04 Loggers call it a Barber chair....
deeper cut from the underside helps a lot
He doesn’t learn. I have left comments about this danger to him for years.
@@AppalachianPatriot I like the channel and enjoy most of his work but his chainsaw skills are really poor. Jst in this video he had 7 or8 close calls!!
Good afternoon from Beachville Ontario Canada! What will you be doing with all these fallow deer? Will you sell the young ones like you used to with the goats? Or does the state of Idaho pay you to raise and keep them?
I’m trying to understand how this adds to your self reliance and independence and provides an income stream for you. Not trying to be nosy just understand. If they are a hobby for you that’s awesome too. Be safe!
What species of maple trees are those Heath? They're so much scrubbier looking than what I'm familiar with out here on the East Coast
I thought all of those goats that you had were going to take care of the weed issue?
I’ll agree with you that dying trees can cause issues while felling, but the barber chair that occurred is from technique, not the tree. Without a face cut to offer direction and a back cut to release the forces, that energy is built up in the fibers and has to release at some point. A set of chaps and a change in technique would help the safety third action you have going on. I’m worried for you as there are many more hours of cutting going forward.
We’ve seen the water tank building several times in video. What was your solution for getting data to the house? Wifi, radio, something else?
Enjoy the videos. Stay warm.
Starlink
@ starlink is at the house, but there is a different signal from the house to the water tank. I thought the last video about it said it was too far for wifi (1500 ft) so other options were being made explored .
Is there a time of the year you harvest the deer
Get a wood chipper :)
How come there is not more pine? Those have steady deep roots that would be able to keep the soil in place.
Got to be careful of those barber chairs, always back cut a leaning tree a bit
Can you partner with a company that needs maple trees? They can do the chopping and cleanup for you.
It sounds like you’ve heard that a number of times yourself.
What happened to Cody coming up to fire the bump side up? Tree thinning is cool and all but not all the time.
This may seem like dumb question, but will the deer eat any of the twigs ?
felling trees of any kind no matter how experienced still dangerous either one gets complacent or mother nature throws you curve ball and at times in winter it not what you see but whats hidden in in the snow that gets you
A new drone! What kind did you get?
Great resolution!
How come the trees are old but really "skinny"? A 60 year old tree in PA would be 3X the diameter of those trees you are saying that 50-60 years old.
I've got the same question! Heath had an original Mavic back a few years, then upgraded to a DJI FPV. What he has now looks more flight stable, like the original Mavic, so my guess would be an Air3S or a Mavic 3... Please tell us Heath!
If it was me I would get used to digger way quicker what would you have to do start from the top put your plate on the damn side straight line down
From the looks of it your tree supply might not last until retirement for you and Cedar.
I'd like to know the motivation for having the deer. I've heard you say you like them and enjoy watching them. Well, thats ok, but they aren't like a dog or a cat. The amount of time and money you spend on them is enormous. I'm wondering why do you want to do this? Is there a payoff for it other than enjoyment? At least if you had cows they would bring in both food and money when sold.
