Search leaners and barber chairs. You seem to have a lot of leaners on the property. They store up a great deal of energy, compression and tension. If you cut like you're doing and it goes wrong, well, that's why they call them widow makers. There are 'safer' techniques for falling the larger ones.

In Wisconsin when you clearcut a forest the bull thistle protects the ground from erosion the first two years. The third year the birds have seeded the blackberries, blackcaps and wild raspberries. The fourth year the fast-growing poplar trees are overtaking the berries. By the 10th year the hardwoods are growing. Mother Nature's way of feeding the birds and animals and preventing the soil from being washed away.

In the wild, Deer use clusters of trees for shade and to knock the wind off themselves in the winter. Its good to leave a thicket if even a small one as its more natural
I'm pretty sure he talked in previous videos about leaving hedges of branches, etc. to provide habitat for the small animals as well as for the reasons you mention above. He's on top of this.

Hi, I have a suggestion for you.
Instead of evenly thinning out the whole area in a homogenous way, rather thin it out in patches so you have areas of woodland, and areas of grassland, each say 1 to 4 acres in size.
This is much more in line with what nature does and creates a better environment for wildlife.
Grassy areas grow thick, healthy grass, and woody areas are dense enough to create shelter for birds and animals.
When I used to clear along the sides of fields, I had a VW hood that I kept my fire on. I would pull my hood filled with hot coals along with me. I didn't leave burn spots, and I only had to start one fire each day.
I added one more cut to the way you are doing. I always cut the top off between where the firewood ended and where the top began.
We used a old 1947 Dodge 3 ton truck hood worked good

To prevent the majority of your hazardous tree splits. Make a thin cut on the opposite side of the tree, an inch or two deep. And below your planned cut. Do this, Before making your primary cut.

I learned from my father who worked in the woods, most of his life.
It’s interesting that the claims at this point he has more experience than anyone around, yet he hasn’t learned that most simply principle of doing a back cut first like you just described

Dang, I was thinking you were in danger even before that really close call! You have a lot of trees kicking back because you're not using a notch and hinge method. One of these days, one of those could smack you upside the head and put you out of commission for good. Take your time, do it right, and get home to Cedar.
What about leaving sections of trees thicker for shade for the deer and then some thinned out areas for grass growth

Time for some PPE (Personal protective equipment) ie, chainsaw chaps, hard hat/cap and safety specs, you are not invinceable and your family needs you to support them 👍

Great progress. Don't remember the name of it, but Lumnah Acres had a huge outside of the house heat source that burns wood, trash, leaves and all to heat their house. Should check it out. They live in snow being in New Hamshire, and they are also off grid. Blessings!

If you want to cut costs by a bunch, look at how to paddock the pastures you have so that your deer can only access sections or quadrants on a given day. Think of a slice of pie vs the whole pie. While they graze on slice, the other slices are 'resting', 'recovering' from the last time they were grazed. Deer aren't naturally grazers. Deer are browsers. Worth some thought 🤔

from listening i if i understand correctly you won't be removing stumps
so i am suggesting in future
rent shear that mounts on skidsteer and shear stump flush with ground other options similar but attachment clamps on and can pull stumps out but little skidsteer may not have enough umph to pull out stump this puller doesn't require digging out root ball so technically less ground tore up

no you are making giant progress - add some manure to help the grass grow, think about planting some apple trees or nut trees - do 2 or 3 paddocks where you plant some forage strips and you can rotate them through those every 8-10 weeks - clover or alfalfa

I found out why my forced air heater had ductwork under my house in northern Illinois. I turned it off/ blocked the outlet. It took three days for my waterlines to thaw. Very lucky, non of the waterlines burst.

Do you know those firewood X shaped bucking racks? I saw a guy in the Italian mountains make a long one with 3 Xs big enough to hold about 15 to 20 8 foot, 2 to 3" logs. Then with one big cut, he has 15 to 20 pieces of firewood with no splitting. Seems a waste to burn all that wood in the brush piles. Take the firewood bucking horse to the trees so no lugging the long poles. His horse folded too for easy transport. Fast and efficient!

I’ll agree with you that dying trees can cause issues while felling, but the barber chair that occurred is from technique, not the tree. Without a face cut to offer direction and a back cut to release the forces, that energy is built up in the fibers and has to release at some point. A set of chaps and a change in technique would help the safety third action you have going on. I’m worried for you as there are many more hours of cutting going forward.

How come the trees are old but really "skinny"? A 60 year old tree in PA would be 3X the diameter of those trees you are saying that 50-60 years old.
I've got the same question! Heath had an original Mavic back a few years, then upgraded to a DJI FPV. What he has now looks more flight stable, like the original Mavic, so my guess would be an Air3S or a Mavic 3... Please tell us Heath!

felling trees of any kind no matter how experienced still dangerous either one gets complacent or mother nature throws you curve ball and at times in winter it not what you see but whats hidden in in the snow that gets you

It sounds like you’ve heard that a number of times yourself.
Watching you cut trees makes me cringe! Always one cut away from catastrophe! There are some decent videos you can watch to help with better tree control and safety. Under cuts and back cuts to give you directional control and prevent barber chairs etc. Cut compression then cut tension.
If you don’t change your ways that chainsaw is going to injure or unalive you. It’s hard to watch this channel because of this.
From the looks of it your tree supply might not last until retirement for you and Cedar.
If it was me I would get used to digger way quicker what would you have to do start from the top put your plate on the damn side straight line down

I'd like to know the motivation for having the deer. I've heard you say you like them and enjoy watching them. Well, thats ok, but they aren't like a dog or a cat. The amount of time and money you spend on them is enormous. I'm wondering why do you want to do this? Is there a payoff for it other than enjoyment? At least if you had cows they would bring in both food and money when sold.

Man…..ladders and chainsaws are gonna be the death of you….risk /reward…. If something happens to you ….. how will your family be affected…..those deer are not worth that risk….. I’d much rather watch you be in that shop than up a snowy mountain with a chainsaw….just concerned for your safety….
He cut his foot pretty bad with the chain saw years ago and had to take some time to heel. He needs to watch some professional arborists, but I doubt he would. Safety last, but he always ends his videos telling us to, "Stay Safe!"🙄
Good that your clearing that under brush poor California they can't Riley Family Farm wasn't allowed to clean his property almost killed his business in 2015 he's got a historical far with reenactment of american historical battles and history I've never seen it but now it's close to me maybe one day soon.

I know enough to know what I don't know. I don't know anything about how stuff grows in Idaho. I believe you are an honest guy, not prone to exaggeration. Is Idaho a very dry place during the growing season? You were cutting down trees that if they were on the east coast of Midwest would be 20-25 years tops. You are suggesting these trees are 60-80 years old. Maybe trees just look smaller on the video than they really are.
Can you answer a question for me?? If a maple tree is 60-80 years old, what would the diameter be for a tree trunk of a tree that old where you live?
