    Everything you said it's spot on!

    Everything you said was on point as a solo filmmaker. You have to be picky with which projects you choose as a one
    man band. You learn a lot when doing projects solo. You learn skills as a gaffer, focus puller, grip, director, DP, etc.

    Having done lots of 1MB shoots, the biggest thing I've learned is to PLAN, PLAN, PLAN. Because you just won't have the time on set (particularly with commercial shoots) to work it out as you go. Definitely allow yourself some time to just sit and think about what you need to do and how you're going to do it. Visualise all the steps you need to take and address any potential problems before you get to set. And then make sure you share the plan with the client so that everyone's expectations are the same. I guess the same could be said for any shoot, big or small, but 1MB involves more work up front than most people realise. But once you get that done and get to set, completing 1MB projects are incredibly satisfying knowing that you've been able to craft everything from start to finish.

      Ahah in these shoots in Italy and france there was no plan at all. Zero. Impossible to do so, just had to go with what they decided to do :)

    one thing i can't stand about being a one man band..... staying in focus handheld on a moving shot. using a focus system helps but i would rather have a focus puller to hand focus on my behalf.

      At that point you are two man band 😂 that’s part of the skill set

    Great video, a lot of truth in both the pros and cons you listed. I'm curious though, my biggest issue recently is the weight of all the kit I'm travelling with. How have you dealt with that when you're bringing along light(s)? Do you ever bring a second camera?

    Hardest part about one man’s band is attention to detail. You’re moving so fast and often don’t have time to think for yourself.

  • @HiddenOaksMedia

    The bit at the end about shooting outside vs a bad indoor location is key. Having to bring extra lights and stuff it’s a lot more work

    Love the video. I think you are right with everything you said here. It's hard to work alone in some instances when you need more gear that require more setup time like light and stuff like that but also rewarding like you said, when you finish a project all by yourself. And yes, choose the projects that you know you can finish alone haha! :D Good video! Thanks for sharing.

    I remember the same kind of debate as the manual focus vs autofocus in the DJ world around 10 years ago, using beat-sync or syncing manual. You were not a real dj if you used beatsync😂. Now everyone does it and you can mix 4 or 5 tracks in the same time and keeping loops in sync and it sounds great all the time.
    I think AF is similar, it is getting better and better and if we can get AI tracking, then we can save money and time and focus the energy and time to level up other things

    • @matteobertoli
      @matteobertoli  ปีที่แล้ว

      Except pulling focus is an actual art and a tool to tell a story. Equally important as framing and exposure.

    • @johnnyweissmuller5838
      @johnnyweissmuller5838 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@matteobertoli That is an opinion, I would say that the actual story and subject/performance is more important. The small nuances of the manual focus pulling is not really in the top of the list of what makes or breaks an impactful visual experience

    • @matteobertoli
      @matteobertoli  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@johnnyweissmuller5838 no. It’s not an opinion. Focus pulling is an art and a tool to tell the story. Not much to argue here ;)

    Matteo, have you ever done a video explaining your general set up for interviews/general talking head stuff? Would like to learn how you set up lights, camera position, what lens you like to use, if you like to do anything with backgrounds like lamps etc.

    Having worked in both bigger crew productions & one man band situations, I often find myself prefering a small team to optimize the quality & enjoyment of filmmaking. While one man band offers more freedom, I find it hard to light, and keep to an efficient schedule by myself -- I find the sweet spot is to have at least one assistant & one gaffer

    Great Video, I got into solo filmmaking by owning a 🎥 Usually when you're a good videographer it's only a matter of time you will get requests from colleagues. Then I got a request from the company I work for, and this was my start as a solofilmmaker.
    I Agree going for high paying projects. Our video gear are expensive and have to be replaced sometime.
    But what I like most is traveling to my client and work with there amazing team. I highly recommend starting your own video business 🎥🚀

    I think the very best thing about being a one man band (or a tiny crew) is that you can make the actors feel very safe and comfortable to experiment without looking like a fool. I've directed the best performances by being alone in a room with the actor!

    I'm a one-man band for 99% of my video shoots. I actually enjoy it that way more just as you stated in the video. I like to see my video projects from beginning to end. I love shooting, but I also love editing and color grading, so whenever I'm hired to just DP on a project and hand over the footage I definitely do not get the same level of satisfaction as I do on my own projects when I work them all the way through.
