  • The Antonov An-225 is the world's biggest airplane. A colossus - developed in the Soviet Union to carry the Buran Space shuttle. Today it carries other giants such a turbine from Prague, Czech Republic, to a refinery in Perth, Australia ASAP. On board: the crew of Ukrainian Antonov Airlines. And DW reporter Grit Hofmann. Went from London City to Schipol around 2011, due to a snowstorm we were diverted to Utrecht and while waiting for a bus to take us to Amsterdam, this aircraft nerds jaw dropped as it taxied out on the runway. There it was: AN-225. Taking of right in front of me. One of the highlights of my life, and all because of the weather.

    To be frank, I had tears in my eyes when 30K Aussies received the AN-225 at the Perth airport, tears of Joy. So proud of Ukrainians and this marvelous plane. Antonov definitely should build more AN-225 planes as this only Prince of the great Antonov family is no longer young.

    I've seen an AN-124 next to a C5. The 124 appeared to be a little bigger, the 225 dwarfs the 124. Mindboggling.

    This plane came to Hyderabad and the stupid airport people even didn't allow common people to go have a look though the crew and the company are fine with public visitors. Even the captain made a statement in the local newspapers that he was very disappointed as he expected the local airport authorities would arrange for common people to visit. It was one of a kind chance. When I look at this plane, i try to imagine the many people putting in all their efforts in designing, manufacturing and maintaining this plane. The technology still works and that is really amazing.12

    Awesome aircraft!! Danke schoen to Ms. Hofmann and DW for making this video. Western aviation enthusiasts don't know very much of this aircraft and this video now showed them it. I have had the pleasure to have worked with the crew of this aircraft while on tour in Kandahar, Afghanistan many years ago. Watching this GIANT coming in to land was truly amazing, for this aviation enthusiast to see. What a GIANT in the distance on its final approach. Watching the crew prepare the plane for its off-load and subsequent loading with a new load, afterward, was something to see as well.

      " Is there only one?"
      Yeah, only one 225 , and it's the only transport in the world that can move really big stuff in a short time.
      It was made to transport the Russian version och a space shuttle but they canceled that project and the 225 was retired but restored later due to demand of bigger planes than AN-124.

    • @nescio03
      @nescio03 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @Robert Ratskywatsky: No. There are two. But the second one was never finished, 'cause the USSR fell apart en the money flow stopped. It was later cannibalized to maintain the working one. Steps to finish it were taken much later, but were frequently aborted. It's now 70% complete and will be finished for sale to AICC. It will take a load of 250 metric tons. Completion cost counting from the first abandonment wil be approx. $300.000.000

    "How Ukrainian make zis aircraft?" Ukraine didn't "make" zis aircraft. USSR built this aircraft as a launch vehicle for their Buran space shuttle. The Antonov plant just happened to be located in Ukraine and Ukraine inherited it.

    Thank you , Captain Antanov , Sir. Thank you for the Engineers , whose expertise is always admired and cherished. Bravo. The question is, will the Antanov Company make one more AN225? Please do.
    Thank you all. Greetings from California.

    The U.S. military used a British contract company who subcontracted with an Antonov plane to fly 2 UH 60 Black Hawk Medical Evacuation helicopters to Egypt in 2005 or 2006, when the U.S. Air Force C5 & C17's were so busy with support flight for OEF & OIF. It came to Buckley Air Force Base in Aurora, Colorado, not far from Denver International Airport.

    7:00 It's cute to see them being confused over that fruit, it's very common over here and it's called jambu air or water apple.
