discount tire employee here, the reason tires of the same size sometimes look bigger or smaller is that the tread depth is not counted in the tire size meaning that tires with deeper tread sometimes actually are bigger by a few MM
Customer came in with a Frankenstein prerunner build and was looking for 39s to get 36-37s out of the size knowing that they run small. It’s how they are designed and “classified”
To find tire height in inches from a metric size: width(1st #) * aspect(2nd #) / 1270 + rim(3rd #). 1270 comes from dividing the aspect ratio by 100 to get it as a %, dividing again by 25.4 (converting mm to in), finally multiplying by 2 because diameter is sidewall + rim + sidewall again
It’s interesting how most modern trucks come with metric sized tires and then when we lift or buy new (typically larger) tires we go for standard sizes. Unless that’s just me although my last 3 tires have been metrically sized...
I think it's the tire size, I don't think they make small standard tires. At least I've never seen any 31s or smaller. I got like 29s on a frontier but they are metric
@@christianpastrano6247 31x10.5R15 is a standard or very common tire. But after that it seems to go metric. Although I have seen 32x11R17 and then of course a very common tire in standard offroad performance is 33x12.5R15-17 etc.
I want a beefier tire than my 33 for my 22. The shop said 35 will require more cutting and no clue how much gas ill loose for them. Im down to 15mpg on my current set up
Had 33x 12.50 put on, the actual height is 31 to top of tread. Measured another guy's 35 x 12.50 it was 33 inches tall Used to buy procomps, they were close to 33 inches tall Everything I have watched has the height measured to uttermost height of tire. How are we to figure tire sizes when they are 2 inches lower than stated?
Although granted I can do metric to standard conversions in my head. I am a welding student and I took a blueprint class and I had to convert a lot of metric to standard and back again. But still helps!
I don't understand how tires can be sold so far off a real size. In this case I have a tire size that calculator's place at 32.8 inches, yet it measures in at 31.5 inches. This is with just about 100 percent tread and a rim within the width range for which the tire calls for. I get the rim width will slightly effect the overall height, and with yet another brand it is right on the money with a wheel on the wider side. This is a real problem for people who are seeking to push the tires size to the limits. Seems cheap tire companies are trying to create the illusion of a better deal while selling you a tire that is a size smaller for all practical purposes.
First of all 12.5 is width to sidewall bulges tread is narrower all terrains tread is wider than mud terrain tread widths and these measurements are when mounted on optimal width wheels mfg of tire even tells you how wide of a wheel you should mount your size tire on for best/safest operation of vehicle
You are probably 12 years old, think you know everything about trucks and have only ever sat in your dad’s lap and drove his stock ranger for 200 yards.
I fucking hate metric tires. I hate the metric system in general. Why the fuck are we using a different system of measurement that nobody knows anything about? Seriously makes no sense

I've never been good at understanding tire sizes. Thanks this helped a lot
Glad it helped!
Day 81 of asking Custom Offsets to build a Monsterjam Monster Truck with 66x43 tires.
Hope yer committed. They just did a wish build. They're a long way off.
One of those 66x43’s is like a set of forces 😂😂😂
What is also confusing for me is that it seems the actual size of the tire varies on manufacturer.
Just like shoes my dude, but we agree!

@@prestostudios128 I bought some 35x12.5x17 tires and they measured 33inch tall. Broke my heart

Oooh, im definitely going to need that calculator...

This is good info I wanted big meaty tires but had no clue what to get now I do
“You are a sad strange little man, & you have my pity.”
Why they gotta do Dustin like that tho. 😂

I see both all the time because I work at Toyos manufacturing plant in white
Great video, definitely helped make sense of a very confusing topic!
I’m not sure who picks the intro music but it’s always fire 🔥
Day 35 of asking for the top 5 dually wheels
Bought a truck recently the tires it has are 33/12.50 r 20 i hate the noise it makes what tires should i get to be a quieter ride
Rating your duallys !
What about the width of the wheel!
What are the best looking and quality MT tires that aren't over $1-1.2K?
Go with Versatyre. If you have doubts go back and watch CO’s vid on it.
Granted as long as you don’t go over a 35” tire.
@@davidsmckee - Interesting. Yeah I'll look for the Versatyre video on it. THanks David.

@Lurtz lol
But we got a video of racing our trucks at an offroad track though... :(
@@CustomOffsetsTV it wasn't exactly what I would call racing. My brother's Ranger could have went through there quicker than them trucks LOL
Majority of my city are metric, so I never knew standard.
another day of asking junior to get a mullet
(i lost count already)

I hate metric anything lol. The imperial system is so much easier to understand

Hmmmm, definitely might!
Day 69 asking for another lifted vs lowered review in hopes to see my bucket on TH-cam for once 😂
Howdy 🤠🇺🇸
Tires need to stay in MMS and aspect ration followed by wheel diameter. No inch crap because it’s stupid
Just a random tire hey Dustin. Definitely not your wheels and tires lol.
Day 2 of waiting on Custom Offsets to reply to my email about 22x14’s on my squarebody :(
You let me know if you never hear back! 🤘😂
