When she finally she said “she died” I felt relieved. I felt relieved cuz death seems like peace compared to the poor girls life. I can’t imagine what she would’ve gone through, I’m infuriated by how many people and kids thought that this was ok and this case just struck a nerve.

Relieved? I felt anger! The neighbors saw her and knew she was being beat could have saved her. Her parents could have saved her if they were actually parents. Her sister Jenny could have saved her. Any one of those kids could of had a kind heart. The church pastor seeing this girl stuff her face with food and knowing she was beaten could have saved. Society failed this girl. And the people who killed served some time and all walked away.

I completely understood what the original comment was getting at. I ended up deleting it because so many people said that such cases need to be heard to spread awareness. 😣 Awareness of what? The cruelty and brutality that human beings are capable of? I first read about this case years ago and of course I had no idea what to expect from the outset but once I'd reached the end of the case I was mentally scarred for about two weeks after. I couldn't get the images and the thoughts of what that girl had suffered out of my head. It literally gave me nightmares. This is a case that should be approached with caution. Sylvia definitely stayed because of her sister. In situations like this, it's so difficult to leave when you have other ties besides just your own self-preservation. Jenny most likely wasn't seen as a "threat" by Gertrude or Paula due to her shy nature and "physical imperfection" from polio, which is what spared her from their wrath. But I have no doubt in my mind that if Jenny was any more outspoken, she would have been abused just as badly. Gertrude and Paula definitely felt no sympathy for Jenny. They just didn't feel like they needed to "put her in her place" or whatever twisted shit they were thinking.

Every time i put you on my hubby says in the background in a deep voice "BELLA!!" Cracks me up. Your the only female youtuber (besides Kendal Rae) that he actually doesn't mind hearing. Anyone else, i gotta put my headphones on or go to another room. We like your voice. And we love the way you talk (cussing & being real) & how cheeky you are. Thanks for being you. 😉

Heartbreaking. No one deserves what's this poor girl went through. The fact that they only served a few years after the brutally torturing her. God bless that poor child.

There is another; An American Crime. I think both movies are so hard to watch but if I remember carefully, TGND is more graphic. Simply awful things like this happen to innocent people.

i was horrified by this case when it was mentioned in the Jasper Jones book. I researched and it and found the movie 'Girl Next Door' which was based on it. I was around 10 or 11 when i watched it. This case has been forever burned in my mind. If I was so scarred by watching a movie based on her story, I can't even imagine what Sylvia went through. Especially when the whole neighborhood boys who she thought were her friends, participated in the behavior. Gertrude was an evil evil woman and I can't believe she submitted that beautiful girl to such torture. Thank you for covering this case

No matter how much I read about this case (and Suzanne Capper's as well), no matter how hard I try to exorcise it from my mind. It has scarred me for ever. Anytime I think about it, I start to shake and weep. Not having faith doesn't help me neither. I just can hope that all of the remaining people who hurt her will soon pass in the most atrocious way. I hope her story, along the ones of all the other girls who couldn't endure abuse by the terrible wolf pack mentality, will never be forgotten, for us as humans to learn the lesson in empathy and selfless acts of kindness when seeing people in need. We must never turn around.
