      I like to use a old empty tube out of a ink pen it acts as a stiffener and you can feed the tag end through pull it out and pull down the knot

      I was fishing yesterday and caught a nice trout weighing 4lb 3ozs but the welded loop was catching in the guide's of my fly rod causing the rod to jerk when playing the fish.. I thought it was going to pull the fly out of the fish but I was lucky.. I think the guy in the video is right.. the wielded loops on fly lines are too big to go through the guides. I just cut mine off today.. I don't want anything that would add to loosing fish.. better have it smooth

    For my nail knots, I always put on some kind of glue to strengthen the knot and help it run through the guides smother. It really helps me!

    • @michaelhazzard4901
      @michaelhazzard4901 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      You should always test the kind of glue that you're planning to use on an old piece of line both of monofilament and the fly line and the backing to make sure that the glue does not melt any of the fishing lines as this will weaken the rig and cause a break off

      Just in case you get a big fish it will run the 100 feet of line in no time. In fact great casters can cast the whole line and you will not have any room for the fish to run

  • @Der_Kleine_Mann
    @Der_Kleine_Mann 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    What I do is, I feed the end of the leader through one of the holes of the spool, and that way I don't need to fiddle around to find the end of the leader. Because if you just leave it hanging out of the reel, and the spool turns in transport, then you end up with the end of the leader again sticking to the fly line.

    You need - oh well hi - now anyway - I would need backing on every reel. I have fought a lot of big fish - well salmon everywhere - and YOU NEED THE BACKING TO LET THE FISH TIRE OUT BEFORE YOU BRING THEM IN. There is stretch in the line so they can keep from tearing their mouth. But this video is awesome now. : )

    • @TheTwispAngler
      @TheTwispAngler 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh - the backing should float so it doesn't tangle on the ground and bottom rocks. That's great. Oh - well that's only a issue if you loose the fish. Well it's just fun to think about fishing. Well what I'm saying is our line stays tight on the whole retrieve and it doesn't just hang out there. But what if there's a problem? Oh - hey it just remembered. It's our long casts that go errant. Great. Thanks. Bye now. : )

      Go on wish.com buy direct from the country they are made in, cuts out the middle man. Sad to say this to people , because I own my own tackle shoppe. Most lures and tackle are made in China , packaged in Mexico or the USA. Read the back of the packages, always try to buy a metal fly reel with a felt drag system, they cost more. But if your just starting out fly fishing 5/6 weight rod and reel set up ($100)will do fine until your confidence level in fly fishing warrants you spending $300-$600 for a rod and $200 on a reel and line , tippets, flies etc.

    So first we start with this 4 hundred dollar fly reel and then we attach this 20 dollar backing to this 100 dollar fly line and then add the 20 dollar leader and tippet and finally tie on a 5 dollar fly,..........Oh and sorry when were done you wont have enough money left to actually go fishing?......Sigh

      I am just getting started (about to follow this awesome vis instructions to spool my reel for the first time, THANK YOU FOR THIS FANTASTIC HOW TO!), just a note....being as I am just getting into this I am working my head over 1: Learning correctly from the start, 2: not dropping major coin in the process. I could I suppose, but that is just waste.
      If cost is an issue, buy used, vintage etc on ebay! Study up to get the decent vintage gear. Pflueger Medalist 1494 reel about $30 or so, Vintage bamboo or fiberglass rod about $40 or so, Backing and Line Rio, Scientific Angler, etc, maybe $50 or so on amazon.... no need to jump to the top shelf on entry, learn to cast well, learn to do line, knots, etc...don't make it about the gear, make it about becoming a good fly fisherman or woman....
      Surely the fish do not know how fancy ones' gear is?
      (or maybe I haven't gotten to that part yet! lol)
      enjoi

    Thank you for the tutorial. I just picked up my first fly rod and reel yesterday. I am going to use it today. Very well done.

    Do you tie the fly to the leader, or tie a length of tippet to the leader?
