Extra goes to somewhere and works as a solo story as well as a part of the trilogy, Unlimited just builds for Alternative, all of what happens in Unlimited is just to get ready for Alternative. You can put a "training montage" for Takeru, tell the reader that he has experienced this world (at least) once already, and you can skip to Alternative without losing too much. It's good, don't get me wrong, but for my tastes is the worst of the three.

Just finished the trilogy... wow, what a series, absolutely incredible, story came together brilliantly, Alternative was by far my favourite but the investment and attachment to the story and characters wouldn't be there without Extra and Unlimited, both were great as well too, but it just all lead to and built to the story of Alt so damn beautifully! It nailed the emotional beats so damn well too, haven't cried that much and hard in a bit. From the stellar visuals to the fantastic ost, along with the story, characters, and so much more, leading to an amazing climax and beautiful ending, suffice to say I loved the entirety of it, 10/10 and its become one of my favourites!!
Sounds really cool, I recently learned more about Muv Luv and have been debating getting into it. If you don't mind how would I start and what order do I play the games?

That's the main trilogy and then there's some spin offs you can play after if you want, only one on steam so far is photonflowers (a series of short stories), and photonmelodies is planned to be released, theres others like Schwarzesmarken that have yet to be translated as well. Theres other stuff but the original trilogies all you really need to know about for now. Hope you enjoy it!

Fuwanovel is home to so many translated visual novels, google that first and then browse for Muv Luv. Muv Luv (not alternative) is a definite first step as it holds all of the back story for Alternative. Finish at least the Sumika, Meiya and Ayamine routes in Extra as characters appear in both that and Alternative then finish at least one route in Unlimited it really doesn't matter which and then move on to Alternative.
I'm going through Alternative now and it's definitely the better of the 2 but Extra and Unlimited (both included in the first one) give serious back story that really helps. It's awesome though and I highly recommend them.
